  • Around the world, countries have been changing the clocks for more than a century. But hitting that snooze button when we lose an hour in bed frustrates many people. So why do we change the clocks? And is it finally time to stop doing it?
Frankie McCamley explains the history behind changing the clocks, who came up with the idea, how it’s changed over the years and what could happen in the future.... There’s some politics involved, decent tunes, a cannon being fired and an interesting golfing technique from Phoebe!
Also, if you fancy doing some reading of your own, here are some links to lots more information below.
    Tick....tock!

People think the sun should be setting at the same sort of time in the UK as it does in the tropics in the middle of winter which is rather silly. Even in London for more than 2 months at the same period of the GMT if move to GMT+1 there will still be no sun or light after 5pm let alone after 6pm. So the really light evenings say sun setting 8.00pm are still only going to be for a small fraction of the year anyway.
Also same folk blame BST for the sun rising too early in the morning in the middle of the summer vs BST when it is the other way around. If move to BST+1 during the summer months won't these same people be complaining about it being far too light after 11pm.
You can't have it all ways as it's impossible to get a happy medium of sunrise and sunset times here in the UK whatever time of yesr it is. A change to BST in winter months wlll not improve things for most in fact make things worse for most.

The same effect could be created by starting school and work an hour earlier in the summer. Putting the clocks forward is simply a convenient way of harmonising the bi yearly change throughout the country.

  • @johnbower7452

I really don't see the point; I have to go to bed on work nights around 10ish, in the height of summer it's still not completely dark coming up to 11pm; who needs that? Seriously? GMT is the right time, let them drop back this October and be done with it. Stay there. All that having to adjust (Thankfully off this week but didn't get up yesterday or today till nearly 9am) is a pain. I'd rather get up when it's light and the light evenings then at the height of summer will bet dark around 10ish; which is fine.

The clocks also went on an hour to BST+1/GMT+2 (double summer time as well between March and October from what I have read.
But it's funny when Cameron mentioned he wanted to move to CET to marry up the stock exchanges for the benefit of UK share prices having the last hour of the working day suddenly doing business with the EU rather than none with the EU, he was praised for it by some, now the EU are the proposing the same thing Cameron did the same people who praised Cameron are castigsting the EU. I think it's madness to change it whether proposed by the UK government or the EU (the USA cope well with 5 time zones, Russia with 12 time zones), it only alright in London and other parts of south east England where it's either side of Greenwich longitude line but isn't that what the people who wanted it a few years ago, are suddenly now complaining about it.

@@dvidclapperton You are right about Double Summertime. That was WWII, and done to maximise the use of daylight. People REALLY hated that, and it was stopped asap.
Suggestions to move to CET come annually, citing many reasons. It is not so much the south east, but people who follow "Gentleman's Hours" who favour it, whilst disregarding the concerns of others - especially in the north. The simple fact is that it has been tried repeatedly, and proven to be a bad idea.

After independence in 1990, Namibia used the same single time zone as South Africa. In 1993 Government passed a bill defining the Namibian Standard Time. This was implemented in 1994 and fom April that year until 2017 Namibia used Winter time, the practice of setting clocks back during winter months by one hour.
In the 2010s repeated calls from businesses and private individuals were made to abolish winter time, citing incompatibilities with South Africa, Namibia's main trading partner, as well as a "loss of productivity".
This resulted in an official investigation by the Ministry of Home Affairs and Immigration. During the polls, 97% of the 3,507 questioned people were in favour of the +2 difference to Greenwich Mean Time, and about 88% wanted to abolish winter time. After the Cabinet was likewise against changing clocks in autumn and spring, minister Pendukeni Iivula-Ithana proposed a new bill to that effect in February 2017.
Since September 2017 clocks are not changed here anymore. We are back to our “normal time” that we the older people were used to all of our life.

If you move the clock back everyone that works in every restaurant will lose 20 hours in 2 weeks of pay Before Christmas and it will affect lots of people in Texas. What this means is that they won't afford to buy anyone a present that they really want to get them. Because they have lots of bills to pay as well. If they change the clock time then that means that life is going to be hard in Texas to survive with a little bit of money that they get paid from all the hard work that they do. Now is this what the government wants to do to all the hard workers in Texas because it will affect all the rich people as well. Because if we don't have any money to spend then the rich people don't get any money from every item that they try to sell because we cannot afford it. And they will be more thieves in Texas and more people on the streets is this what the government wants. If you think the coronavirus was bad way to they changed the time and they take away all your hard-working money. Remember it's the medium people that work hard for the rich and the poor so that they can live a good life. If the government takes 20 hours in 2 weeks out of everyone's paycheck Texas will be messed up till next year. Now how do you expect to have a good Thanksgiving while you worrying about paying your bills and having gas in your car to get to work and trying to survive with a small paycheck when it comes to eating. This will even affect every restaurant and every store in Texas now is this what the government wants because it will affect all of Texas and anybody who agrees on changing the clock back. I know the government listens to everything. That people text on their phone. But this message is very important to the Future of every country that's going to move the clock back. It's going to hurt like a hurricane destroyed their City. Now is this what the government wants to see during Hurricane Season.🤨

Having an earlier time means you have to get up in the dark mornings which affect your health and productivity
You don’t loose sleep instead you wake up early
You don’t have extra sleep instead you wake up later
