      Please tell us more, was it filmed in basingborn? How many b-17s did they actually have on set ? It’s such a special film for me I must have seen it hundreds of times

    • @gavinthomas214
      @gavinthomas214 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      @@henner1231 It was filmed at RAF Binbrook in Lincolnshire. I think they had 5 flying B17's. One crashed during filming and was unfortunately destroyed. Everyone on board got out safely but it caught fire. I think that was owned by a French group who had flown it in specially for the film. The props team also built half a dozen flat cutouts on scaffolding seen in the background during the Amazing Grace drive. They fastened reflective film where the plexiglass would have been so that is reflected the light differently as the camera moved. They sent out groups of extras to stand by each cut out and had us look busy. They weren't 100% scale but you wouldn't know. They also had a B25 liberator there for aerial photography and a even a fake runway on raised tables for filming model scenes. As I said a great chance to see how everything worked behind the scenes.

      @@tchaika2697 At eleven seconds in on this clip I'm the guy grabbing his hat at the bottom left whilst following after the jeep. My friend Ian and I held back until the end of this take in the hope we'd make it into the shot and we did. As extras we got to sit on the side lines and watch a lot of the aircraft preparation scenes being filmed close up. This 2 minute section took several days to film but looks very smooth and polished when edited together. I gained a lot of respect for the film crew watching them rigging every shot.

    This is one of my favorite scenes. How packed that Jeep is isn’t far off from his packed the -17 was. They look like huge airplanes, but throw in 10 young men in combat gear, and it’s downright tiny. My mind thankfully didn’t have to contemplate such things when I was 18. All the respect in the world to those “boys.”

    • @agp11001
      @agp11001 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hard to imagine that nowadays we have single-seat fighter planes that are a almost the same size (at least length-wise) of a 10-man WW2 bomber (I think there's less than half a meter difference between a Flanker and a Fortress, and the Tomcat was only like 3 meters shorter).

    A friend of mines Grandfather was a Flight Engineer on a B-24J over Europe during WW2 and he told me that they used to sing this song before every mission as part of their "good luck" ritual. May ALL who flew during WW2 in all theaters of operations ALWAYS have clear blue skies and a tailwind.

      Good luck ritual? It's as good as a prayer, if you ask me. Americans were more Christian back then than this limpid and insipid generation that in my opinion could never have accomplished a tenth of what their betters did back in the forties.

      They were named "Red" after the Tuskegee Airmen 477th, who were bomber escorts. They painted the entire tail of their fighter planes tail RED.
      Which was really smart because even though they had the highest bomber return rates, no one gave them credit, until they had the red paint on the tail

      terrible disrespectful nonsense..
      fictional characters and story..
      Captain Dennis Dearborn... real name Robert Morgan, yes he really was a "Captain Morgan"
      co-pilot Luke Sinclair real name James Verinis didn't leave his post in combat, how disrespectful to say he did, Jimmy sat in his seat doing his job for the whole mission.
      Navigator Phil Lowenthon real name Charles Leighton was not drunk on mission again disrespect to a true hero.
      Bomber Val (almost a Doctor) Kowlowski real name Vincent Evens didn't lie about his qualifications when he joined the air force, in fact he was a haulage contractor.
      Radio man Danny Daly real name Robert Hanson wasn't wounded in combat.
      Tail Gunner Clay Busby real name John Quinlan didn't leave his post in combat also, he never lost the family farm in a card game, how disrespectful to say he did, he worked in a carpet shop before the war, his family were not farmers.
      Virge Hoogesteger real name Harold Loch top turret gunner.
      Richard Moore real name Cecil Scott Ball Turret Gunner.
      Gunner Jack Bocci real name Bill Winchell.
      Gunner Evgene McVey real name Scott Miller.
      the names of the real crew of the Belle should be remembered not the fantasy nonsense in this film.

      @@gailraby1722 The character's names are fictional, true, but the story is completely real. Dresden was not massive bombed until 1945 but in 1943 there was an actual bombing mission over Germany, and it was the Belle's last operation. There is a documentary about that called "Memphis Belle. A story about a Flying Fortress" and it was made before the Dresden massive bombing. More information here en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memphis_Belle:_A_Story_of_a_Flying_Fortress#

    Is it weird I like the Fife and Drum version of Amazing Grace rather than the Bagpipes version? I think it is fitting for a Civil War movie (Like during the funeral of a fallen army officer). I am imagining a funeral wagon carrying the corpse of a slain general inside a coffin draped in the Union or Confederate flag with the soldiers he commanded marching behind the wagon as the fife and drum corps is playing Amazing Grace escorting their commander to grave.

    Как ветеран Б-17 сказал - такая дверь в пилотской кабине действительно есть, чтобы быстро выпрыгивать с парашютом. Но на вас будут эти тёплые вещи, парашют, планшет и ещё куча барахла. И, раз попробовав запрыгнуть С ЗЕМЛИ ВНУТРЬ, вы бы моментально перестали пытаться исполнить этот гимнастический трюк с диким извивом из кое-каких фильмов. Вы бы просто входили в дверь в фюзеляже как и все нормальные члены экипажа.
    :-)

    Folks, I am looking for another really old movie about B-17 crew - it was kind of fiction, I just remember they draw on the paper the missing wheel to save blocked bottom gunman after landing - if somebody can give a link/clue I will be very appreciated

      That was an episode of a TV anthology series called Amazing Stories. I believe Steven Spielberg wrote that episode. Here is the IMDB link: www.imdb.com/title/tt0511124/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_44
