  • With the coronation of King Charles approaching, it’s fitting to scrutinise, not only him personally, but the monarchy as an idea. To talk about everything from the ways in which the royals fund their luxurious lifestyles to how they exert political influence, Aaron Bastani is joined by Graham Smith, CEO of Republic - a pressure group driven by a single issue: to abolish the monarchy.

I do not believe anyone should bow or scrape to anyone, and these royals are not who they say they are, the change their name from sax Gotha to Windsor to hide their German history. They also hide many crimes they have committed, and don't think it's just prince Andrew.

When one accepts the principleof a monarchy, where one family line is thought superior to the rest then the inequality is built in at its foundation and its acceptable for there to be those at the very bottem. The reason we have so many in dire need is because a few have taken so much for so long.

You make a valid point. Is the Royal Family actually seen as part of 'society'? I don't personally see them as part of the strata. They are just a thing. And, I am glad I am not born into it.

I beg to differ, what have they taken? They literally spend their whole lives raising money for charities and spreading British culture and businesses abroad. If anything, they are the ones bringing income into the country. Inequality is everywhere, inequality is diversity of life, just like diversity in race, and diversity in talents etc etc etc.

    • @cattymajiv

@@CooperJeanne What on earth does race have to do with anything here? It's a an artificial concept, made up by bigots to justify their racism. (I'm not necessarily saying you are 1 though.) There are differences between people, like between apples and oranges, but the idea of race just makes people upset, so it shouldn't be inserted where it's completely irrelevant.

The situation they are born into , the way they are raised, and the way people fawn around them creates individuals who are completely unaware of real life . Just look at Andrew , and he isn’t on his own . How they can find people to work for them ,given how they treat “ordinary” people is beyond me , especially given the well known very tight purse strings . I know it is only a very small example, but look how Charles reacted towards the minions over the fountain pens . This really does give an insight as to the person he really is .
In my sixty nine years, I have found time and time again that the more money people have, the more selfish , greedy and ungrateful they become . Get rid ………and do a two for one and include the lords .

This does not include the business revenues which the Royals brings to the country's mass media, tourism, fashion industry a.s.o......Overall, I should think, a good tradeoff. Wouldn't you say ? I think this debate on democracy, monarchy, presidency etc. is not fruitful anyways. Many people think U.K needs to return to absolute monarchy minus the Anglican Church, and Catholicism with a socialist economic model is the answer to the woes of Europe. Let's hope Putin defeats West in the Eastern Europe with the blessings of Vatican and King Charles III, through a military coup abolishes this Parliament of crooks and brigands of the liberal rich, rein in the private sector, reverts to Catholicism and do away with the wokish Anglican Church, establishes socialism and finally attacks France, reclaim it's throne and eliminates French burgeiose, razes all monuments of Liberalism to ground and restore Christianity there. This man is an intelligent articulate and interesting person to listen to, and talks a lot of sense. We should learn lessons from our past history and do away with traditions which no longer work and are unfair, cruel and very out dated, and replace them with new ones which do work. Its the only way forward and how and why we make progress in this world. Its like changing our routines in our own personal lives which no longer work and are no longer relevant. To move forward in life we need to work out why something is not working and once we know what that is we can then have a plan to change and move on. I enjoyed listening to this conversation and am of the belief that the British monarchy is on its way out. This country will still have tourists long into the future without a monarchy as the head of state because the UK has a long history of so many beautiful places of interest and history attached to it. Financially it doesn`t seem to make any sense either to be paying for and supporting a family living in luxury and extravagance when there are so many families living in poverty, pain and sickness or worse still have no homes at all and are living on the streets. We need people like this man to talk about and expose those who are getting away with all sorts of crimes and who are being protected because of their status and heritage which is unacceptable. Justice and fairness should apply to everyone and no matter what their title is everyone should be treated the same when it comes to breaking rules and breaking the laws. Rules must apply to everyone, that is what a democracy is. The royals are very much out dated and it`s inevitable that they will gradually and eventually be fazed out.

For me (NOT a British person), being anti-monarchy is not about royals being corrupted, greedy and entitled, completely out of touch with the realities of ordinary people. Let's be honest, that describes a whole lot of population that has no connection to the royals and monarchy. For me, it's about the idea that someone is above you in every respect just because they were born to one specific family. The idea of a society that supports class system, where the law does not apply to the royal family and even aristocrats, but it is brought on full force on the people that weren't born into the ruling class. It's about the built-in societal inequality - society where not all people are born equal, which is utterly immoral and repugnant.
It baffles me to no end that there are huge amounts of people that are happy to be subject to the king or queen. They will defend self-imposed inferiority and subservience to one person (and by extension, to their family) who gorges on the fruits of their labor and leeches off of the society as a whole. The Duke of Cornwall is also the major landowner of Dartmoor National Park, 57.3% of which is privately-owned. Recently, wild camping in the park (the only place in England where this activity is legally permitted) has been seriously curtailed by the High Court of Justice, following the preposterous complaints of a rich landowner who makes profit out of hunting on his land. Now the areas in the park where you're allowed to wild camp are smaller and you must seek permission of the owner in order to do it, so the right of people to freely enjoy nature is subjected to the whims and economic interests of a handful of privileged individuals. Although the royals are not directly responsible for this, the Duchy represents a very significant part of a cohort of people who hold the power to restrict everybody else's freedom, and this alone should make clear how the monarchy has always embodied Britain's deep-rooted inequality.

In the real world he will face orchestrated institutional opposition. We would see this as barrage of propaganda, media manipulation and misinformation. This power is such that Graham would be characterised as a dangerous revolutionary and the population would become frightened and intimidated, and be made to feel grateful for having a monarchy. People that new Savile said that he was a creep and they couldn't wait to get away from him, you can see many people say this in videos... funny how Charles was quite the opposite!!

Private tutors were acceptable in those days. The tutors were qualified to teach and if I were rich I would have private tutors for my children to the age of eligibility for university.

I'm on a parish council where the majority are supporters of the royal family. I think there's only me and one other who are republicans. Discussing local plans for Liz's jubilee put me in a difficult situation because I disagreed with doing something, but whatever I say I'd be outvoted. In the end I just kept quiet. Perhaps I should have said more and stood up for my beliefs. It's something I regret, but I would have still got flack from the other councillors for it.
I have been a republican for many years. Those who talk about tourist income are being ridiculous because even without the royals, you'd still have the historic houses and all the history.
Without a royal family we'd be far more democratic.

Probably more important than the wealth of the royals is their role as head of the armed forces, and their role in how a prime minister is chosen. If the Palaces were retained as tourist attractions they might even pay for themselves, but having such unsuitable people in charge of the armed forces, and involved in which ELECTED politician is the prime minister, needs to be removed.

At the time Queen Elizabeth was a child, children of wealthy, high status parents were home schooled until they were old enough to be sent to boarding school, Royal children were never sent to school. That was normal for the time. However from Charles onwards it couldn't be justified for children to be schooled at home so they were sent off to boarding school. It's interesting to note that there wasn't a great deal of interaction between other children at school and Charles was famous for not interacting with fellow students when he went to university. It probably feeds into the paranoia they all have about ordinary people

I was born in Spain. Constitutional monarchy (what on Earth does this mean?) I lived in the UK for 25 years. Another monarchy. I live in Japan now. Apparently, this in an empire. It is full of right wing fascist leaning people (I should say men, since women are pretty much invisible). It is terrifying to listen to the news and have fear and warmongering individuals promote the idea of their obvious superiority in Asia and how the empire should be restored. All this subtly, and sometimes not so subtly stated. (And then you get people on the streets protesting because they don’t want foreigners in their country… In Japan! Nobody goes out on the streets to protest about anything…or it seemed that way) Anyway, my point is, monarchy promotes right wing ideologies, gets working and middle class people to defend an opressive system that in no way benefits them. It is pure social gaslighting. As it it is not bad enough to have corrupt politicians and we also have to put up with a bunch of…oh, whatever. Monarchies are a cancer of society. Bring down systems of oppression. Thank you so much for a riveting interview.

Remember the Civil War when we had a king executed. Stability was always been fragile here, but since 2016 it has disappeared. During WWI, many men in France, including my grandfather moved to the far left, or in some cases joined the Communist party, so with that as a background it's no wonder the monarch changed the family name, nor that there was a General Strike 5 years later. As for Conservatives, the only thing they conserve is their bank balances.
