Rod is very skilled tradesman and can turn his hand to anything both inside and outside maintenance. I believe that anyone out there who could give him cheap rent for maintenance would be the winner.

Taku aroha nui ki a koe, e Rodney. Thanks for sharing your story and wishing you all the best in finding a place to be safe and secure for the days to come. Your attitude is awesome and you deserve any support you can get. I'm wondering if you might be eligible for one of the kaumātua flats in Coromandel Town? Worth looking into. Good luck e hoa. x

This is heartbreaking. Every community should have accessible and affordable rental stock. People should be able to own a bach or rentals and do with them what they want. But, people who rent should be able to access affordable rental properties. I think the solution sits with government building rental properties for all those in need. A pensioner should never fear or worry about not being able to find or afford a place to rent.

And we're the lucky ones. There's a bunch of folk coming through without even that much behind them. What "success" is it to see retired people all having to rent with strangers in those golden years we were all promised? Uhg I swear this must be bizzaro world sometimes

Everybody can see the problem but is anyone willing to take a hit when they sell their home? Not on your nelly. The "mine mine gimme" sure comes out when people sell. I'm 54 and live in a converted single car garage with my cat. It's perfectly sized for me but I'm also precarious because it's a rental. I could easily be priced out already if the landlord so chooses

An interesting story.Hang in there Rodney since you're a genuine decent good man and although it's currently hard to see how things will pan out for you,the fact you're a decent human being will see you good and right. Is my reckoning.Have faith in yourself just as i do in you.Kia kaha.

Any senior citizens housing in the area? With a lease coming due you would be on a priority list. My brother is charged $130 a week for a city council bedsit in Invercargill. Where has all the council housing gone in NZ ? Good luck.

Rodney, in his situation, actually needs to buy a camper van, with solar etc. I know that it sounds grim, but I think he would be fine. Many people live in them very cheaply, there are free sites available, tho you need to move every 2 or 3 days. Friends of mine do this, and cope very well.😊

A suitable campervan with solar is not a cheap purchase, regardless of condition or age. The up-front cost might not be viable, sadly.

It's a matter if will not a lack of options, on the part of authorities at every level to solve these problems. With the development of people skilled in tiny homes & converting containers into comfortable living, local, regional & national regulations need to make it easy for little villages on unused land, and/or help marae to do the same. The ideal is full sized houses of course, so room for visitors to stay, but minimum is warm & comfy at affordable rent in areas people WANT to live. Such a shame on society that various agencies can't solve this...
