    LAST POST WINDING UP OUR LITTLE SURVEY OF THE GREAT HUSKER DU.
    This is a live gig taped at Camden Palace in London on May 14, 1985. Judging from the song list, they have not yet recorded the last album we listened to, Flip Your Wig. But there's plenty from New Day Rising and previous albums.Near the end they rave up The Byrds' magnificent song Eight Miles High, a single the Huskers released in 1984.
    The band is absolutely soaring at this show. Amazing how Mould's shredding, kamikaze wall of sound could be so melodic at the same time.
    MichaelD8393 left a very interesting comment on this upload 2 months ago. I'm quoting it here. " You know as awesome as this show is, Bob has regarded it as maybe the worst show Hüsker Dü ever played. He actually HATES that the show was filmed. What happened was they played Washington, DC, USA two days prior, were on no sleep for over 24 hours, and none of the gear they played on/through was theirs, it was all rented (whether their actual gear was forgotten or just didn't show up remains a mystery BTW). And then they played the following night in Cleveland, OH, USA! So in Bob's opinion, this show is just him, Greg & Grant falling-down exhausted and playing on rented gear! In my opinion though, it's still a smoking hot show that I wish I could've been at."
    Hope you all enjoyed these 25 posts of Husker Du.

      @@MichaelD8393 Bob is clearly out of gas at the peak of Eight Miles High...but the band is clearly not up to their usual intensity. go watch the 83 show in philly. New Day Rising may not even have been out, as they were known for playing new material live before anyone had heard it, either way...bob looks like hes really messed up or equally out of gas.

    If Husker Du had debuted in in 1989 instead of 1979, they’d have been huge stars during the early 90’s alternative boom….exact same could be said for the Replacements. I’ve seen Bob live many times but was too young to see Husker Du…wish I had.

    This performance is superb and extremely dramatic. A very unhealty and exhausted Bob Mould screams, occasionally convulsing and roaming on the stage, always on the verge of the collapse (look his eyes from 24:25 to 24:30, and he almost faints after the main scream in Eight Miles High at 52:14). Nevertheless he plays like a god, followed by Grant and Norton. They should open an "Husker Road" in Camden. This gig was epic.

    • @MichaelD8393
      @MichaelD8393 6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Here's why Bob looks so exhausted and on the verge of collapse: Hüsker Dü played Washington, DC, USA two days before this show, were on no sleep & jet-lagged for over 24 hours, and none of the gear they played on or through was theirs; it was all rented (though whether their actual gear was forgotten or just didn't show up remains a mystery BTW). And then they played the *following night* in Cleveland, Ohio back in the States. So in Bob's opinion this show is just him, Greg & Grant falling-down exhausted and playing on rented gear! He actually HATES that the show was filmed and later released on video. But I'm still glad he, Greg and Grant gave it their all; the show must go on!

      Man, if this was a "shitty" performance, I can't imagine what a great one looks like. The "Recurring Dreams" jam is insane, and totally worth suffering through if only for the insert shots of disappointed-looking punk kids all "Man, even Black Flag sounds like this now." And then they get all moshy to a Byrds tune. This band was genius.

      Thats one of those weird musician dilemas
      ...what one might think of as subpar or crap can also sound essential or awesome to certain listeners. While what one considers amazing might as well be ignored. in parts they are kinda sloppy but their energy makes up for it. I guess the promoter scored some speed before they went on stage.

      what shitty produced albums? only New Day Rising is kinda messy, because the band did it themselves. Prior, Spot is a legendary producer--dont know who did the Warner albums, but thought they all were recorded well. what albums sounded shitty to you? if you dont like their punk years, well...thats how a punk album should sound like.

      @@DaveAnchovies No, the band did not produce New Day Rising themselves. They wanted to, as Bob had already produced other bands for their own label, Reflex Records, but SST insisted on Spot being in charge. He was the producer for all of their SST albums except the last one, Flip Your Wig, which they were finally allowed to self-produce and which sounds much better anything they did with Spot. The reason he's a legend is because SST was THE punk indie label and Spot was their resident guy behind the console, not because he was a great producer. Getting it done as quickly and cheaply as possible was SST's main concern, and in that regard, Spot always delivered. As for the "well-recorded" Warner albums, they were produced by Bob and Grant. They demanded (and received) complete creative control, including producing their own records, when they signed with Warner.

    Getting sick and tired about 'rockfans' who kep insisting that music must be so 'LOUD and HARD!!" and those who insist that you need to
    use some shit to apreciate it more. Music is about more than being loud and music can be enjoyed perfectly without drugs.

      Henry, you had to be there then. Not everyone was using drugs. The passion and loudness moved your body. You can't listen to this stuff through earbuds.

    I remember the NME cover story from this tour. Pretentious limey sissy "journalists" were the worst. That article was about everything but the music.
