I'm glad I'm not the only one who reads these characters as being adult. I think Wylan is the only one who reads as a teen to me because he's run away from home, and even then he seems like an older teen. And I'll be happy with any spinoff, but what I really want is an Inej-taking-on-slavers comic book or something.
I always picture Matthias as Sam Heughan (actor who plays Jamie Fraser in Outlander)and every time I had to remind myself that Matthias is half his age! LOL
okidokiboki I so read these 2 books as the characters being 24-27 and whenever they mentioned ages it was so hard for me to get my head around it. In Six of Crows I totally pictured Matthias as Alexander Ludwig who plays Kato in the Hunger Games movies and the show Vikings! Just something about Matthias' build and hair and eyes reminded me of him

Like it's automatic, everytime he appeared in the book, Sam Heughan popped out in my mind, my brain just refuses to think about anyone else for Matthias. I think it's because the characters (James Fraser and Matthias) are very alike,especially personalitywise.
I love how Kaz made himself a nightmare to Pekka Rollins. Sounds evil but the bastard crone had it coming. Godbless Kaz and his little crew for beinh awesome! I need the next Grisha series goddamnit!
The "I would have come for you"-line in this book is litterally the most romantic thing I have ever read in my entire life. I had to put down the book and blink away tears! It just tells how much how the two love each other and trust each other and how much Kaz has grown! Oh my goodness, this is the best book I have read in such a long time, I could gush about it all day.
I know, I was the same! I died INSIDE when he gave her the contract, and the entire bath scene finished my soul. And him giving her the key to defeat her "shadow" both literaly and as a metaphor. And yes, Inej inspires him to not let go entirely of his humanity. Also, I loved the scene in which Kaz talked with Wylan and the "people cross the street when they see you". Forever crying about Kaz calling Jesper "Jordie".
I just finished this and I'm a mess. I'm such Wylan and Jesper trash. I also wish we got one more Nina chapter, when she left but I do agree that it leaves it open for her to return in a new series. However, if she doesn't return, I would LOVE to see maybe a short story collection which focuses on all the Characters post Crooked Kingdom. This has honestly became my favourite series.

The friendships in this, I can't. Everything's *sooo* beautiful. Nina+Inej, Jesper+Inej. The way Wylan felt about everyone. ❤️ Kaz and Inej. They are everything. The 'half-kiss' was asdhfhskjkkl and their final scene together. Aaaaaah I love that that's all we got, no hugging, no making out and all that, because it would have been a *huge* leap for their characters. I'm still salty about Matthias' death! Like you, when I heard that not everyone's going to make it, Matthias was the first one I thought of. I really thought I was prepared. I just wanted all of my babies to make it. 😭😭 I want to bawl with Nina and hug her and stress-eat with her. I really liked the Wylan chapters. He's such a smol bean. Him and Jesper are just so precious. Aaah the Kuwei/Jesper kiss had me in fits! Jealous Wylan is everything. And that's one more thing I especially love in CK, it stressed me out but amidst that stress, there's funny (the dialogue is 👌🏼) and cute, fluffy moments. I kind of expected an appearance from Nikolai as himself but we got Sturmhond instead and ohmylawrd GOOD TIMES. I was freaking out when he appeared. I'm not sure how to feel about Nina/Nikolai though. Haha

NO NO NO NO. Nina and Matthias were my favorites and although I feel that his death is necessary for Nina's development it still HURTS. I thought Nina was going to bring him back and she couldn't! I finished it right before I went to bed and I could not fall asleep. I was too distraught LOL. I wasn't really a big fan of Kaz until this book, but now....I adore him. His last chapter exuded Inej's view on forgiveness. He wasn't saying sorry, but he was trying. I was having heart palpitations when he grabbed her hand. UGH, I love it. My only complaint is that the plot was a bit all over the place for my liking, but other than that is was excellent even if I didn't agree with everything done in the book. Now I need to go and read the Grisha Trilogy!
I agree that Matthias' death was very predictable. As soon as Leigh tweeted that not all the characters would survive I was instantly like "It's gonna be Matthias" - He was just the most convenient choice, I think. I was sad because he and Nina were my two favorites in the series. That's the only thing I was disappointed by though, I loved the rest.
On the topic of Matthias, I thought it was a really interesting parallel of him being shot and killed by someone who reflected strongly who he used to be and was still struggling to shake away. The boy who killed him could have easily just been him, so I thought it almost came full circle. I also agree that Matthias held back Nina in many ways, while I liked them enough as a couple, I just felt like Nina was made for so much more. It was almost like the Alina Mal dynamic...
Inej is my favourite too. And I love Jesper. I could not come up with one thing that I didn't like about this book. I loved pretty much every word. You're right though...these characters don't read as teenagers at all. The combination of their experiences, skills, wisdom, flaws, coping mechanisms, and relationships could not have developed in just a few years.
I think Bardugo has earned an automatic read for me from now on. I didn't enjoy the Grisha trilogy all that well, but after this masterpiece she deserves at least a try in any of her other ventures.
A small detail I loved with Jesper is that he switches between two languages when talking to his dad and that’s something that people who grew up bilingual do.
Matthias had the second most chapters (or tied with Kaz for the second most) I liked the carnival scene with him. But I agree with you 100% about what happened at the end. I loved all the characters. It's so sad that the series is over, but I love how it ended
Definitely agree. This duology is amazing. Everything has layers upon layers upon layers. Really really brilliant. I know you love the Grisha trilogy, it was okay for me but this series, theres like a huge jump in quality and character and everything. AND PLEASE DONT STOP TALKING ABOUT KANEJ. Gosh their relationship is beautiful. The bathroom scene. :') And I think Matthias didnt have 'much' development in this book because in the first one, I feel he had the most. And yeah, saw his death coming in the first book. It was beautiful and tragic. AND YAS TO NIKOLAI AND NINA. I also have to say that i feel there's something lacking a bit in the first book, but I can't pinpoint what it is. STILL LOVED IT THOUGH. Always love your review, Sam! Always on point!

Okay so Leigh has said on multiple occasions that she plans to do a Nikolai spin-off in the future so there's def more Grisha to come! So maybe Alina will pop up in that? And as for Matthias, I really learned to love him upon re-reading SoC & I was a HUGE Nina/Matthias shipper, so while I understood his death and don't think it was a cheap send-off, it devastated me that my ship sunk UGH. So for that reason I'm not ready for Nina/Nikolai although with time I think I could see it. Esp. since Nikolai is my fave Grisha char. and he deserves the best and Nina is the best so. Either her or someone totally new would be cool. But right now I'm just too sad lol. THESE BOOKS AND CHARACTERS HAVE RUINED MY LIFE
I just blew through this series in the past week and I am so in love with everything! I love Kaz and Inej who are so strong but have very similar but different weaknesses. Especially the weakness of touch. I can't decide which character I like the best because I love them all so much! My favorite line in the book that made me laugh outloud was something like Matthias said when Nina was pretending to be pregnant at the end of the book in the hospital and he said (paraphrased) "We can fake a pregnancy but we can't fake birth. But I wouldn't put that past Kaz to do." Idk something about that made me laugh so much.
Nina was my favorite and I didn't see the Matthais thing coming :( but I think I got surprised by it because I was so invested in him and Nina! At the beginning with Ninas withdrawals from the parem, I thought that she would save the group in this book then die from over-exertion or the inability to defeat her addiction. I am thankful she lived but was so so sooooo sad to see Matthais go. This book was excellent!
I would absolutely love to see an adult series with all of them!!! Maybe Alina could appear in that one??? *gasp* what would happen if Alina took parem??? Would it not affect her, or could it bring back her Grisha powers since this wasn't something Morozova could even think about existing? 🤔
I read this book almost a year ago, and it still stands as my favorite book. I re-read it recently and it reminded me of how incredible this book is and how incredible these characters are. That’s why I’m re-watching all of these reviews because i don’t have anyone to talk about it with so this is the next best thing lol
I love Inej and Kaz. I also like how they evolve throughout their book but in a gradual way. I am hoping for a third because I want more. I also hope Hollywood doesn't turn the story into a movie. It would just ruin it because there is so much depth in the duology.
I was thinking the same thing about Nina and Nikolai! Their parting words definitely set up a possibility for a story there. Also, Queen Nina?! I'm so down for that.
Tbh I actually thought right when we saw all the characters together in SOC that Wylan was gonna die (he had the innocent and naive traits and authors love to kill those kinds of characters) but he's my favorite so I'm glad we got to keep him
I feel like them only losing Matthias also worked so well and didn't leave it feeling lacking in loss because every one of them had lost so much already. We got to read about all of their previous losses, and that became such a big part of the story.
I think Mattias made the most sense since his growth was perry much done by the end of 6oC. Everyone else has so much more room to grow. Though it kills me that he isn't able to join Nina in changing the minds of their people about one another. 😢 I flipped out when Nikolai appeared too. He was Mr absolute favorite part of the trilogy, so seeing him again made my heart so happy! I COMPLETELY agree that the openness of all the characters' endings obviously means we are gonna get more with those characters popping up.
I just finished Crooked Kingdom looked for your review :D Wylan & Jesper relationship was my favorite. They had the best banter but still asked for each others help when they were vulnerable. I was just hearts& smiles with these two. I guess my only problem with the Crooked Kingdom is the fact that, as you said, it's impossible to read these characters as 16-17. Can't do it.
Just finished this yesterday and I loved it. Kaz and Inej are some of my favorite characters ever. TBH, I didn't see Matthias death coming. It broke my heart because I loved Matthias and Nina and somehow I wanted to get their happy ending. I love the rest I feel like all the other characters' ending were fitting and yeah I sensed that the ending was left open ended for more of the Grisha world. If there's more I am so there for it.
The grishaverse has ofically become my favorite series of all times, when it comes to this books i don't have opinions, i have FEELINGS. I will say that i was a bit worried since i didn't like the ending of the original trilogy, but this one was an absolute delight and i have zero complains. And of course i almost died when my little precious sobachka made his entrance, and ohaving all my faves from the original helped a ton making this book so amazing and special in my heart.
omg, I LOVED LOVED LOVED this book, I had the biggest book hangover at the end, I was in tears (in a good way)....I agree the diverse cast was amazing and soo lovely to read about, I could not pick a favorite character as I loved them all the pase and character development, everything AAHH awesome! it is my favorite book to date....with this being said I would like to read the grisha trilogy...but I have heard so many mixed reviews. I loved SOC and CK that I don't know if they will live up to it and leave my disappointed...I don't know, I will probably pick it up at some point.
You actually made me feel a little better about Matthias' death. I still kinda feel like it was thrown in there as a convenient loss, but you sweetened that up a bit for me.

OMG, I cried at the same place as you. And I rarely ever cry, in books and movies. But I feel like it definitely setup things for future books. It's why I'm not sad it's over. Nina's power change has huge implications for the series. And as sad as I am that Matthias died. I also think there might be something with her and Nicoloi, Nina as the Ravkan queen, YES PLEASE!
Yeah of all the characters I feel Nina has the most story to be told especially after Matthias dies. I feel like if Leigh does more grisha books Nina will play a significant role. We spent so much time developing Nina's new powers but I want to see how other people and other grisha react to it. I loved all the kaz and sturmund interactions. I kind of feel like if kaz had been born a royal he would have been what Nikolai is now.
Amazing review Sam, I thought Jesper would sacrifice himself for his father or our squad, I was so sure!! I also thought one of Kaz or Inej would die cause LB said on twitter that more than one character would die lol. I didnt think Matthias would die cause its just too predictable tbh. I'd prefer if the characters were older it would be more realistic specially Kaz but I mean I think it isn't impossible either you know cause I feel like in the past they were really intelligent at a young age. Is that the dregs werent with eachother for long, I mean Inej was only in the dregs for two years and I feel like that is not enough, also same thing with Jesper. LIKE ME READING THE DISCRIPTION OF A FOX FACE CHARACTER AND YES!!! (And plus size Nina with Nikolai? Yes. Being a plus size women, to see that happen will be like +++++)
I feel like Inej is Kaz’s shadow. She went through so much trauma, was taken from her family, stripped of her humanity, yet she still ended up a strong, wise, and loving person. She doesn’t push away others, rather, she welcomes them. Like Kaz, she wants revenge, but she wants revenge in a more valiant way if that makes sense? Kaz would hurt anyone to get revenge on Pekka, but Inej wouldn’t. Inej repents for the lives she takes, but Kaz doesn’t. Inej represents all the things Kaz could become-all the things he could have. Despite his trauma, he could become a caring, loving person. I don’t know, that’s just my take.
it was a compliment from kaz. that was the sweetest thing kaz could say to jesper, and it was the moment kaz was saying he forgave jesper for how he endangered everyone in the first book when inej got stabbed.

The Kaz fight in the slat was so amazing! One of the best fight scenes ive read in a book, closly followed by the Inej vs Dunyasha final showdown.

Nina was my favorite and I didn't see the Matthais thing coming :( but I think I got surprised by it because I was so invested in him and Nina! At the beginning with Ninas withdrawals from the parem, I thought that she would save the group in this book then die from over-exertion or the inability to defeat her addiction. I am thankful she lived but was so so sooooo sad to see Matthais go. This book was excellent!

I would absolutely love to see an adult series with all of them!!! Maybe Alina could appear in that one??? *gasp* what would happen if Alina took parem??? Would it not affect her, or could it bring back her Grisha powers since this wasn't something Morozova could even think about existing? 🤔

I read this book almost a year ago, and it still stands as my favorite book. I re-read it recently and it reminded me of how incredible this book is and how incredible these characters are. That’s why I’m re-watching all of these reviews because i don’t have anyone to talk about it with so this is the next best thing lol

I love Inej and Kaz. I also like how they evolve throughout their book but in a gradual way. I am hoping for a third because I want more. I also hope Hollywood doesn't turn the story into a movie. It would just ruin it because there is so much depth in the duology.
I was thinking the same thing about Nina and Nikolai! Their parting words definitely set up a possibility for a story there. Also, Queen Nina?! I'm so down for that.

Tbh I actually thought right when we saw all the characters together in SOC that Wylan was gonna die (he had the innocent and naive traits and authors love to kill those kinds of characters) but he's my favorite so I'm glad we got to keep him
I feel like them only losing Matthias also worked so well and didn't leave it feeling lacking in loss because every one of them had lost so much already. We got to read about all of their previous losses, and that became such a big part of the story.
I think Mattias made the most sense since his growth was perry much done by the end of 6oC. Everyone else has so much more room to grow. Though it kills me that he isn't able to join Nina in changing the minds of their people about one another. 😢 I flipped out when Nikolai appeared too. He was Mr absolute favorite part of the trilogy, so seeing him again made my heart so happy! I COMPLETELY agree that the openness of all the characters' endings obviously means we are gonna get more with those characters popping up.

I just finished Crooked Kingdom looked for your review :D Wylan & Jesper relationship was my favorite. They had the best banter but still asked for each others help when they were vulnerable. I was just hearts& smiles with these two.
I guess my only problem with the Crooked Kingdom is the fact that, as you said, it's impossible to read these characters as 16-17. Can't do it.
I didn't even think about Nina and Nikolai being a thing in the future but I am so here for it lol
Just finished this yesterday and I loved it. Kaz and Inej are some of my favorite characters ever. TBH, I didn't see Matthias death coming. It broke my heart because I loved Matthias and Nina and somehow I wanted to get their happy ending. I love the rest I feel like all the other characters' ending were fitting and yeah I sensed that the ending was left open ended for more of the Grisha world. If there's more I am so there for it.
The grishaverse has ofically become my favorite series of all times, when it comes to this books i don't have opinions, i have FEELINGS. I will say that i was a bit worried since i didn't like the ending of the original trilogy, but this one was an absolute delight and i have zero complains.
And of course i almost died when my little precious sobachka made his entrance, and ohaving all my faves from the original helped a ton making this book so amazing and special in my heart.
omg, I LOVED LOVED LOVED this book, I had the biggest book hangover at the end, I was in tears (in a good way)....I agree the diverse cast was amazing and soo lovely to read about, I could not pick a favorite character as I loved them all the pase and character development, everything AAHH awesome! it is my favorite book to date....with this being said I would like to read the grisha trilogy...but I have heard so many mixed reviews. I loved SOC and CK that I don't know if they will live up to it and leave my disappointed...I don't know, I will probably pick it up at some point.
You actually made me feel a little better about Matthias' death. I still kinda feel like it was thrown in there as a convenient loss, but you sweetened that up a bit for me.

OMG, I cried at the same place as you. And I rarely ever cry, in books and movies.
But I feel like it definitely setup things for future books. It's why I'm not sad it's over.
Nina's power change has huge implications for the series. And as sad as I am that Matthias died. I also think there might be something with her and Nicoloi, Nina as the Ravkan queen, YES PLEASE!

Yeah of all the characters I feel Nina has the most story to be told especially after Matthias dies. I feel like if Leigh does more grisha books Nina will play a significant role. We spent so much time developing Nina's new powers but I want to see how other people and other grisha react to it.
I loved all the kaz and sturmund interactions. I kind of feel like if kaz had been born a royal he would have been what Nikolai is now.
Amazing review Sam, I thought Jesper would sacrifice himself for his father or our squad, I was so sure!! I also thought one of Kaz or Inej would die cause LB said on twitter that more than one character would die lol. I didnt think Matthias would die cause its just too predictable tbh. I'd prefer if the characters were older it would be more realistic specially Kaz but I mean I think it isn't impossible either you know cause I feel like in the past they were really intelligent at a young age. The thing that actually had me like /::/: ?!?$? Is that the dregs werent with eachother for long, I mean Inej was only in the dregs for two years and I feel like that is not enough, also same thing with Jesper. I feel like Inej is Kaz’s shadow. She went through so much trauma, was taken from her family, stripped of her humanity, yet she still ended up a strong, wise, and loving person. She doesn’t push away others, rather, she welcomes them. Like Kaz, she wants revenge, but she wants revenge in a more valiant way if that makes sense? Kaz would hurt anyone to get revenge on Pekka, but Inej wouldn’t. Inej repents for the lives she takes, but Kaz doesn’t. Inej represents all the things Kaz could become-all the things he could have. Despite his trauma, he could become a caring, loving person. I don’t know, that’s just my take.

it was a compliment from kaz. that was the sweetest thing kaz could say to jesper, and it was the moment kaz was saying he forgave jesper for how he endangered everyone in the first book when inej got stabbed.
