The lead singer is Bennie Martin. First song is Darling Goodbye & second is the flip side That is why I Love You recorded on the ASTRO label around 1960.
I have a song that I have been trying to figure out the title and label. City Street Harmony would you happe to have an e-mail that I could send it too?
As for the second song, it is called "That's why I Love You", also sung by Cliff Nobles. Both of these songs can be found on his album, Pony the Horse on Moonshot Records.
I agree.. They only had a few releases but are one of my all time favorite groups. What a great sound they have! Most groups tried to get songs done in as few takes as possible. Recording session time was expensive, as well as the tape itself
@recordmancharlie - This is called "Darling Goodbye" by Bennie Martin on the Astro label. I'm not sure what the deal is with this copy. The Astro copies have a long intro. This isn't an acetate.. It's an actual pressed record with dead wax #'s. I don't think it's a boot of any kind. As a matter of fact I think the long intro was dubbed on top of the original version because there was no awkward splice on this copy. I think it's a pre-release test pressing
THANK YOU!!! This has been driving me nuts for the couple of years that I've had this record. Now I need to figure out what this is.. It's not an acetate. It might be some sort of test pressing. Thank you again!
Cliff Nobles also did a cover of this Song, called Darling Goodbye. His version sounds very much like the version played here. Could be one and the same.
I had the first song on tape for years and never knew anything about it until I heard it on a homemade cd that a friend of mine has. The song is Darling Goodbye by Benny Martin. Astro 109 from 1960.
PJ, I was really hoping you would put up some of your fabulous tunes for the holiday weekend, and you kick it off with this great sound. Thanks very much for all of your songs. Sorry I can't help with any info, though the first song had elements of Barbara Lynn's 1962 masterpiece "You'll Lose a Good Thing."
Cynthia, I have read so many of your comments regarding doowop songs and I can tell that you are a really romantic lady. I am from East London and we were deprived of many of the classic sounds of that era on this side of the pond. TH-cam has allowed us to catch up on these great recordings and I know just how much these sounds take you back in time Cynthia. Love and best wishes, Alan x
ALL these tracks of Bennie Martin come from the MOONSHOT label album "Pony the horse" which put out old tracks from Cliff Nobles to take advantage of his breakthrough with "Horse" and Jesse James .
I hope to find out too. I'd like to post the entire songs, but am hesitant until I know what this is. I've confirmed that there is at least one bootlegger reissuing music off of TH-cam, but I suspect that there are many more
I don't know anything really about the Astro release. However, to add some more mystery to the story, Darling Goodbye (minus the intro)/That's Why I Love You is by Cliff Nobles on his Moonshot LP 601 from 1968). Members were Cliff Nobles, Bennie Martin (doing lead), Steve Dickenson, Webb Dixon, Edward Davison and Elbert Byford. One other song on the LP features Bennie doing lead. A "Jimmy Rogers" wrote all the songs on the LP, as well as the liner notes.
Here's hoping you find it! The people on TH-cam are really helpful.. some I've found fast, thanks to comments... and one took almost a year but I did find it! Nice tunes, too!
It kinda sounds like Crusty Toe and The Fungus Threats, if I'm not mistaken. Toe's music was always hard to come by, and after that nasty falling out with The Threats, I wouldn't be surprised if this "blank" was them. Good group, though. I just always wished they would've gotten more exposure. PJ, I just LOVE pullin' your chain. And I know this is probably really important to you. But I'm useless in this area. I just like makin' you smile no matter the circumstances.
Two of the best shows to learn about and enjoy vocal group harmony (aka doo-wop) are the Pink and Black Days with Alex Ward, heard on Sirius XM channel 5, 11 to midnight, Saturday nights. The second show, the Doo-Wop Stop with Cool Bobby B, also on Sirius XM channel 5, heard Sunday nights from 9 to midnight. Both shows will keep the group harmony sound alive forever..
A legendary tenor in front of a famous group. Born, raised and died in the U.S., he had a string of near-hits and a couple that scored. Can you pick him out from the purity of his voice?

Man, these are two fine cuts!I`m sorry that I can`t help you identify them. There should be one of us out here who knows, given the music -maniacs we are!
Don't think it's The Buffs,"I Want To Know". Quite different. Just had to listen to this great mystery again. What a fantastic R&B tune. Would've been a hit for sure.
@PJDooWop I hope you find out who recorded this one. Sorry, I don't have a clue. Are you from Throggs Neck? I grew up there, between Philip and Randall Aves. I was right across the street from Dill Place. I have not been there since 1988.
The lead singer is Bennie Martin. First song is Darling Goodbye & second is the flip side That is why I Love You recorded on the ASTRO label around 1960.
