Luffy wasn't necessarily strong. His power is the most ridiculous in the world. Not the most ridiculously strong. The bar for his fruit to awaken is very high. Meaning, even if people have had it prior to him. He was just the first one in 800 years to awaken it.

i've heard some people say it's a plot hole that luffy's gears no longer seem to come with draw backs. i haven't really thought of one for gear 3 other then his body just becoming more used to the change in size. but couldn't he just eat more food to compensate for 2nd? that way he wouldn't be starving his body resulting in no loss of life span. it does seem like a solution luffy would think too.
I don't think Luffy has time to eat while using gear 2 but for the rest of the gears they have have drawbacks too. Reduced lifespan - gear 2. Becomes smol - gear 3. Has to recharge haki - gear 4. Gear 5 - become really tired and old temporarily
@@BoopisMaximus not really, gear 2 and 3 do not have draw backs. he uses them freely. same with gear 4 after wano, he swaps forms and goes in and out of it without losing his haki all throughout the raid. only times you really see his classic weaknesses are after he tanks a blast breath and goes all out with gattling for like half the chapter.. and gear 5. all i'm saying is, you don't see the draw backs as often. or at all when it comes to 2nd and 3rd.

It’s pretty obvious that luffy simply trained and improved his 2nd and 3rd gears during the time skip. Visual changes too, instead of activating gear 2 by hunching over and pumping his legs, he can now isolate and pump wherever he needs. And gear 3rd doesn’t need him to gigantify his entire body and transfer to where he needs anymore, he just compresses the air densely into his fist instead of the air filling his entire arm. Training = better control, definitely not a plot hole
