- Heydey-ho, and welcome back to the “Yours in old FoMoCo iron” TH-cam channel! My name is Adrian Clements, and today in video #23 we’re going to see and learn about a very special 1967 Ford Fairlane GT 2-door hardtop with a factory W-code 427-4V 410 hp V-8 engine - a car that should not exist according to the period FoMoCo literature. We’ll have a look at that literature and other documentation, and we’ll see photos of the car with detailed explanations, including the car’s Deluxe Marti Report. What a great car one can just imagine how fast that car was with that engine installed in it. Just simply awesome.
I saw a 67 Fairlane XL 427 after it was delivered to Phillips- Long ford in Baker City Oregon. I'll never forget seeing the 427 badges on the front fenders

Interesting how some of these cars got built. I remember seeing a GM 1980s econo box with a strange interior colour that was not available in that car. Turned out the owner had a relative working for GM and was able to have it built with the interior colour only available on some other car. Sometimes it’s who you know!
In 1970 as a eighteen year old had a 1967 Fairlane GT. Was bronze with buck skin interior, bucket seats ,four speed, 390 two v carb, single traction. I paid $ 1500 for it. Low mileage and looked like new.
I bought a brand new off the floor 1966 GTA. Black with Red interior and red rocker stripes. I had on order at the time a GT Red with Black interior with a 4 speed trans. After waiting 2 months because the 4 speed manufacturer was on strike, I cancelled the order and as walking out, a salesman showed me the floor model GTA. and let me test drive it alone. Never owned an automatic car before this time, and I put that new C6 thru it's paces. What a great Ford Trans compared to the Fordomatic of the day. I do not know why the GT Stripes are missing, but the the hood is not a GT hood on the yellow fairlane.
My dad bought new 1967 Fairlane 500 station wagon. It had a 289. I learned to drive in it.

I owned a 67 Fairlane but it was the four-door jack web special. Damn I miss that car.
It’s seems funny and that they built the car with all the premium driveline components, but put an open differential in all the 427 cars.
@jamesblair9614, this wasn't by accident. As a matter of fact, ALL of the 1967 Ford full-size, Ford intermediate, and Mercury intermediate cars built with a 427 engine had a non-locking rear axle with no exceptions. All of the 427 Fords got a 3.50:1 non-locking rear axle with a 9-3/8"-diameter ring gear (Axle Code "5"), while all the 427 Ford & Mercury intermediates got a 3.89:1 non-locking rear axle with a 9"-diameter ring gear (Axle Code "7"). There were no optional ratios available, and a Limited Slip (locking) differential was not offered either. Why did they do this? I can only conclude that Ford's experience with testing the 427 engine since 1963 had revealed that offering a locking differential behind the 427 would have resulted in higher warranty claims.

@@johnunruh1086, I would like to see documentation of that rear end as a factory install. As I stated above, the standard-production 1967 Ford and Mercury intermediates with W-code and R-code 427 engines were all coded to have Axle Code "7", a 3.89:1 non-locking rear axle with a 9"-diameter ring gear.

Just makes you wonder, how many cars were special ordered like this. I had a chance to buy a 67 Fairlane GTA when I was much younger. I believe the guy was asking $2500 for it. It wasn’t matching numbers, but I should have saved my nickels and pennies and bought it. The mistakes we make when we are young. Great video!

An outstanding video, wish I had recorded the talk with the owner back in 2014. That was a special car, special show that year. Was unaware of the hood modification on the cross-bracing.

As a Young teen in colorado, remember a late 60s galaxy pulling up to the shop with steam coming under it. Lime green. Guy opend the hood. Said he restored for his neighbor. Sohc cammer wow. Second one I've ever seen. 1st was kenz and Leslie's 55 t bird at gas station my dad went to for repairs in Denver on Lowell Blvd. Then was sid gents 427 4speed 67 Fairlane. My only ford memories.

Just like GM many options not previous known were available if you wished to wait for them.
I ordered a 65 Chevy II with a 300 hp 327. Waited over 6 weeks for it. Later I could have gotten a 350 hp but would have to wait much longer.
One of the best street drivers I had. But brakes were very bad.
Or course today this could never happen. With the electronic systems controlling just about everything in the car, and the "end of line" procedures and checks with configurations and calibration files, and all referenced to the program's official product definition letter defining the option codes, any deviation would be immediately flagged as an error and the car not released until corrected. But at that time if it could physically fit and be connected with fasteners, and the parts were readily available, it could theoretically be built. I'm aware of many such exceptions made by Pontiac, some were experimental that were sold off instead of scrapped, some intentionally ordered, like a zone manager ordering a Grand Prix with a Bonneville 2 door hardtop roof installed. And there were some deviations from the build documentation. Pontiac customers who ordered a car were informed when and at which plant their car would be built, and invited to follow their car down the line if they wished to do so. Along the way they might remember that they forgot to specify and axle ratio, and ask the guy installing the rear axle if they could get a 3.42 instead of a 2.41. Sure, no skin off his nose. But the build documentation would list a 2.41. I'm sure all car companies back then also had numerous such "unicorns" rolling off their lines.

I've watched all this change over nearly 35 years and at 30 assembly plants, including your old plant when I worked on '92 F-Series/Bronco. I currently work with Mustang programs for FRAP.
We traded the car’s soul for accuracy on the build sheet. Sad
@@brianhdueck3372 , that's also a part of build quality though. And since such detailed records are kept electronically there's also the potential to protect against litigation. Perhaps a society that treats lawsuits like winning the lottery is the saddest part.

The first thing I thought was it had to have been ordered by a Ford employee. My dad was born and raised in Detroit, and while he was there he was offered and bought a one-off 1956 Buick that had been ordered by an engineer in Flint, with several non-factory features, including custom upholstery. I used to have the documentation but I don't know if I still do.

Be nice if the 66' & 67' Mercury Comet GT had those available engines.
It was avail in the 427 Comet. There were 8 total 1967 427 Comets built with GT package. Even rarer is there was ONE 427 comet with power steering from factory. How do I know? I Ran 427 registry for years and had Marti reports on all 427 Comets built. Made a spread sheet with all options on all cars.
Back in 67 I seen that same setup. It had the 2 four barrels and nothing could touch it. When gas was 30 cents a gallon yeah!!
Except that THIS is the SINGLE 4-barrel, of which the records (well, you saw the video) say none were ever built.
Kind of like one production year of 454 Corvette I saw (but have since forgotten which model year) while going thru some production info: that year, Chevy's hottest Rat was available in a 'Vette, but NO ONE ever ORDERED one!
Even though the setup you were talking about was the hottest you could get in a 'Lane, THIS anomaly HAS to be nearly as good as suddenly FINDING one of the 'Vettes I was just talking about!
"Muscle Car Era" has always been my favorite part of automotive history!
Unless I'm mistaken Hull-Dobbs Ford on Broadway in Knoxville TN had a red 1966 GT on display. It had a 427 four speed with front disc brakes. I still remember the label that said more pressure required when braking, guess they didn't have power brakes. I was 16 and lusted after this car till it was sold. It had black bucket seats and console. Beautiful car.
@jamesburnette4120, what a sight that must have been! If it was a factory 427 car, it couldn't have been a 1966, as a) the 427 wasn't available to the regular public in a Fairlane until the 1967 model year, and b) disc brakes were not offered on the 1966 Fairlane; 1967 was the first year.

I remember in 69. I went to school with a dude whose dad was pretty high up at Ford. He got a 70 maverick with a boss 429. Yeah. You can get anything factory if you're on the inside. I have no idea what happened to that car

Just curious....was the W code 427 available on the '67 Mercury Comet/Caliente/Cyclone also? I can only recall seeing the R code on some Comet club coupes.
I know of one in Blue I keep haunting the owner to sell it was in an issue of Modified Mustangs & Fords. Not sure how it was built but I don't care. My Fairlane needs a sister.

Another great video. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I see no hood scoops on this car. All GT and GTA's had hood scoops to my knowledge. I know that my 67 GTA did.
It has the power bulge hood in the picture with the headlights on two pot metal insert’s on each side of the hood that came on 66 and 67 cars and in 67 you could get a flat hood with the 427 or the hood scooped fiberglass hood
@cudaus1, excellent point! If you look closely at the underside of the hood on this car, you'll see that the stiffening X-brace is notched to clear the 427 engine air cleaner. This notching feature was unique to the 1967 Ford and Mercury intermediates. The 1967 Ford Fairlane GT came standard with a hood that had twin power domes and integral turn signals, but that normal Fairlane GT hood is not on 7H42W207669. I can only surmise that this car received the non-GT hood due to the notched X-bracing required for the 427 engine, because there was no GT hood with the X-brace notches because the 427 engine wasn't normally available in the Fairlane GT.

worked as a teenager in a local gas station, there was a guy who used to come in in a cherry Fire engine red 67 Ford Galaxy conv., wheel caps, white top & interior, got to finally check the oil, 427, popped my head in to see a bench seat with 4 on the floor, awesome car, what a sleeper
I had a 1967 GTA outfitted almost identically to the first white one in the video. My first car to be exact. You only get one first car and this was it.
@125southernnh2, excellent! I borrowed that photo from the front cover of the 1967 Ford Fairlane sales catalog. The image originally had text at the bottom that stated, "Join the people who have more fun - Fairlane '67", but I was able to remove that and just use the car.

Know the right people, grease the right hand palms. No different across the board. I first learned about this 'process' during the mid 1970s when MOPars were being choked down to the extreme. Recalling a 1967 Fairlane W code with factory a/c and 4 speed sold in Charlotte, NC some years back...

All manufacturers have examples of this kind of thing. Just because the options are not listed in the ordering list does not mean the manufacturers will not build them. Especially like this one where it was an insider ordering it. I don't know about these it shouldn't exist stories.
Didn’t somebody respond to one of your previous videos that they had a R code 67 Fairlane GT and that they were original owner (same car perhaps)?
@markhale8084, the car in the video is a W-code 427-4V, not an R-code 427-8V, so they aren't the same car. When I saw that comment I assumed that the person meant "Fairlane 500/XL" instead of "Fairlane GT", as there were ZERO 1967 Fairlane GTs built with an R-code 427 engine.

Wow such a special car actually a 1 of 1
Things happen at Ford that aren’t supposed to happen. My brother ordered a 1979 Ford Bronco Custom. On the order sheet it was a medium blue with black bumpers. Someone on the assembly line must have liked it and put chrome bumpers on it. Upon arrival at the dealership my brother noticed the chrome bumpers but the salesman didn’t and my brother wasn’t charged extra for the chrome bumpers.

Google Ford Australia's Ford Unicorn the one & only Bill Bourke's Ford Falcon XW Falcon GT one off factory fitted 428 Cobra Jet.
The XW Falcon GT was a 4 door sedan & Bill Bourke was the Boss of Ford Australia & had this Falcon GT build for him exclusively.
It is still exist & like this Fairlane GT Hardtop its Aussie Unicorn still lives.

I noticed the wheels on this car look an awful lot like the 8 lug Gran Prix wheels on my 1967 Pontiac 2+2. how do you explain that?
Excellent informative channel and content .As a long time Ford devotee , a cammer or r code anything are my dream. Have a 66 GTA with a 70 SCJ , 4 speed , 430. Beast of a car and a 70 falcon Cobra body .Am searching for parts ...Kudos my man, always share...🛠
Inn-er-esting...I thought 1969 was the Falcon's last production year, after which it became the Maverick.
The DSO code indicates that this was a "Dealer Special Order" vehicle. DSO cars can have configurations that don't match the sales literature. I own a 1966 Fairlane GT/A that is a DSO. The only thing special about my car is the exterior color, "Acapulco Blue", a '67 Mustang color, and red, white, and blue GT/A badge emblems instead of the standard black and white. Also, these side emblems were positioned partway up the fenders instead of coincident with the white stripe. The color code is blank on my warranty plate.
I wish that the Marti reports went back to 1966 as I would love to see a more detailed build history for my car. I was fortunate to have an uncle that was a used car salesman at the dealer when the car was sold, traded in, and then resold to my aunt before I bought it in 1974. He was able to find out some of the history of the car for me.
@knavekid, "DSO" does not stand for "Dealer Special Order". When the DSO Code is 2-digits long, "DSO" stands for "District Sales Office". When the DSO Code is 6-digits long, "DSO" stands for "Domestic Special Order" for units sold in the US and Canada and consists of the 2-digit District Sales Office code and 4-digit Special Order number. When the DSO Code is 6-digits long but the unit is being built for shipment overseas, "DSO" because "FSO" which stands for "Foreign Special Order".

@@adrianclements8916 Thanks for the correction. I'm sure my uncle explained it to me correctly 50 years ago, but my recollection is obviously faulty! My Fairlane is 6H40S156### with 63D body, 82 trim, 350141 DSO, 4 axle, and 4 trans. I have a video on my TH-cam channel called "Death Chase (1975)" that has footage of this car shortly after I got it. This film was a high school project.

I bought a new1967 Fairland 427 "R" code XL/GT from TASCA Ford in RI. It's Candy Apple Red with black interior. Ford built several cars that Marti Reports say never existed. Ford Museum staff prove otherwise.
Do you know if the 410 hp engine had the same solid lifter cam as the 2 4 barrel engine ?
@thomasdaum1927, yes - the same camshaft was used in the W-code 427-4V 410 hp V-8 engine as the R-code 427-8V 425 hp V-8 engine. The only differences between the W-code and R-code motors was the intake manifold and carburetor(s).

I read where you could buy a new 1967 mustang and take it to a dealership and they would install a 427 cu medium riser engine in it for a price. Retro fitted. A plane mustang not a shelby or GT mustang .
Shouldn't exist???? I knew of and worked on 2 '67 Fairlane with 427-4v's, one coupe and one convertible. Both were sold new in Fresno, CA. With the coupe, the owner (a retired California Highway Patrolman) special ordered his car with the 427 because that was the only V8 engine available which didn't have an air injection pump. The car also had a C6 automatic, just like the Super Cobra built by Shelby for Bill Cosby. That was the only Cobra built with an automatic.
At the time, your local Ford dealer could sell you a 427 complete crate motor and install it into a new car which came with an FE engine. I know of several '67-'69 Mustangs that had this done to them. Years after that, Ford was building 427's for use in boats. Their crankshafts lacked a pilot hole so they couldn't be used in a car. We had a custom boat builder around the corner from us and they had several 427 crate motors stacked up in their shop. For some reason, they had our shop store one which they had pulled out of one of their boats to repair the boat.
@automatedelectronics6062, the car in the video shouldn't exist because the 427 engine was listed in all the literature sources as not being available in the 1967 Ford Fairlane GT, and it was subsequently the ONLY '67 Fairlane GT built with a 427 engine. There were zero '67 Fairlane convertibles VIN'd to have a 427 engine, so the car you were working on must have had a transplanted engine. Also, none of the 1967 Ford intermediates built with a 427 engine had an automatic transmission - they were all coded to with Trans Code "5" for the Toploader 4-speed manual.

@@adrianclements8916 I believe, as I stated previously, both cars were in the possession of their original owners. The coupe was special ordered. The one with the convertible wouldn't have known or even thought about having a 427 transplanted in. Come to think about it, the convertible might have been a 1966, as it didn't have the 1967-only steering wheel hub.
Back then, cars could be ordered from the factory in any configuration and often came equipped unexpectedly.
I was in Alaska in the summer of 1967 and was blown away when I found a 1967 Ford Galaxy 500 which had the old Cruise-O-Matic and not the new for '67 Select-Shift Cruise-O-Matic. I don't remember which engine it had. But, in my lifetime, when I saw something out of the usual, I committed it to memory and remember it as if it were yesterday.
Back in 1972, when I was searching for a car-based pick-up, at one used car lot, I saw a 1968 Mustang Shelby GT500KR and it had the expected 428 V8 with an automatic transmission. I can imagine that you might say I am in error about that one too?
Oh, after just missing out on a 1969 El Camino SS396, I ended up getting a 1971 Ford Ranchero Squire. It had the standard 351C-4v engine with a small-case C6. Being standard was confirmed by the Ford info label inside on the glove box door, which showed all the different Ranchero models and engine combinations. I found it interesting that eventhough there was a 429 V8 option, it showed that it wasn't available with air conditioning. I know that A/C was available in the 1972 Ranchero and I once saw one of those too.

1. Trans Code "W" = C4 SelectShift Cruise-O-Matic 3-speed automatic
2. Trans Code "X" = MX SelectShift Cruise-O-Matic 3-speed automatic
3. Trans Code "U" = C6 SelectShift Cruise-O-Matic 3-speed automatic
4. Trans Code "Z" = Heavy-duty C6 SelectShift Cruise-O-Matic 3-speed automatic
Did the car you saw have the MX transmission?
I'm not understanding your comment about the 1968 Shelby GT500KR with the 428 and automatic? That was an RPO (Regular Production Option) powertrain in that car.

Yep. And I remember the leftover '68 Shelby Mustangs being sold as'69's.
Ford wanted convertible Shelby Mustangs and Carroll Shelby wanted no part of that, so he left. Yes, I met and talked to Carroll Shelby extensively at the SEMA show in Las Vegas a year or so before he died.
@@automatedelectronics6062, I know that left-over 1969 Shelbys were reVIN'd under Federal supervision to become 1970 Shelbys; I've never heard of left-over '68s reVIN'd as '69s.

Well i had a 67 ford truck factory 427 stamp on the back of the motor no number on the front of the block i took it out to be rebuilt it

So could not get the r code model and street it but the w code had 410 hp must have been more to that r code car.
A 67 sdn springtime yellow is floating around Northampton pa owner was louie the car has less than 10 k miles 427 8bbl 4 speed in the mid 80s thecar was stored in Bethlehem pa at S&S automotive hope someone on here knows what happen to the car the car was in perfect shape mid 80s

I had a 69 GT fastback with a 390, loved that ride! Damaged the radiator and couldnt find a new one (before the internet). Sold it to a friend and he put a 350 radiator on it.

Fellow I worked with told me his brother had a Ford special order from the factory, equipped with Mopar 440 and 4 speed manual. Thought it was BS at the time but have heard similar stories. Any truth to it? First story was in 75..
All of this nit picking on the fairlane does nothing but sound like men at the bar blabbing about their special model that is too precious to take out of the garage. I had a 66 fairlane gta that I had my foot up carberator all the time! It was 1969 and I kept it tuned perfectly, the only derog was the poor drum brakes , but that engine and C6 trans really made her fly, ran right with yhe chevelle 396's of the day!

@AndrewByrnes-iv5dn, I know, right? Nudge, nudge, wink, wink! The actual horsepower was probably closer to 480 than 410. From 2011 through this October I owned a 1967 Ford Custom 2-door sedan with a factory W-code 427-4V engine (VIN 7E50W200131), and that thing had POWER!

So.... I've been living a lie my entire life. I've owned my 67 500 since I was 14y.o. my father owns his 66 500xl emberglo/emberglo since 1973.... I could tell you anything about that car. I tell everyone that the 427 in 67 was only available in the cars stated in the book...... well there goes everything I thought I ever knew. Let the apology tour begin..... damn Ford exects with there special orders...... killin me everytime. Next you'll tell me someone ordered a 67 GT with a coulm shift and a 200ci 6cyl.
