Literal decades later and that Spike speech is still my favorite declaration of selfless love I have ever seen on TV. As I once said, the build up and ups and downs in Buffy's relationship with Spike leading to the payoff found in this scene made this whole show worth it for me for that speech scene alone. Bravo!

@@alexh8613 They are both exes and they were both toxic to her. Frankly all three of them need to get over it, her included. Love isn't always rational and it doesn't always mean ending in togetherness. "You are a hell of a woman"
Those exact words that are pulling Buffy back on her feet have been spoken before and have had the same effect. Riley in S6 "As you were" said it to Buffy and gave her the strength to end the toxic relationship with Spike at that time and turn back into the light.
    I love the reccurring phrase.

Remember the little Fear Demon when Buffy was in College? “They’re all going to abandon you, you know?”..”yeah, yeah..!..SQUASH!” The best thing about The Speech was that Spike didn’t extoll Buffy as the Slayer, but reminds her that her true power is as a result of her being a “hell of a woman.” That’s the whole point of the series Joss was trying to make. Buffy’s real strength never came from her powers as a Slayer, but from what she got from her mom, her friends, Giles, Angel, even what she learned from the Council and the Big Bads she fought.

Spike this far into his relationship with the Scoobies is known as the guy that can see straight through anything and see it for what it is, ever since 3x8 where Spike tells Buffy and Angel the truth on their relationship. The Scoobies were tense when he returned because they knew they couldn't pull the wool over his eyes, but imo it's also why Buffy pushes him away at first. Spike out of everyone in her life is the only one that sees her for what she is and loves her for it, which is something Buffy doesn't get from anyone else and can't do for herself in most situations, this scene resulting in her listening to him and accepting what he says as the truth is a beautiful one.

When Spike was a human he was the type of person who DID sit back and observe the way people behaved, maybe because he was so desperate to fit in, but it carried through all his years as a vampire too. Now, he's excellent at reading people - especially their worst actions due to who he was around as a vampire - and he's fantastic at cutting through the BS. He's also great at really seeing Buffy... because who do you watch more than the person you're in love with? And, as shown in the speech, he really understands and loves her. It took 6 seasons, but Buffy and Spike are finally the best couple on the show.

Evil is that thing that whispers in your ear and says “you should do this because you want to” or “you /deserve/ this, even if others get hurt”, or “what you believe is right and you should do anything to make it true for everyone” or “be scared of those people over there, they’re out to get you”.

I love the speech Spike gives Buffy about his love for her. While soulless he's told her he's loved her many times, but its never been believable because he was soulless. He couldn't entire mean it even when he thought it was the truth because he didn't fully understand love. Many fans agreed with the sentiments in his S3's speech to Buffy and Angel, but at the end of the day, being love's bitch isn't love. It's an obsession. While soulless he could claim his love was about the other one, but it was really about him. Now, with a soul, it isn't about him. And what he said to Buffy and Angel in S3 is true because their relationship had always been wrong because it was an underage girl in said position Spike was talking to them of. This whole paragraph all shows a huge difference between soulless characters and non-soulless characters.
I have issues with the group in this episode as a result of the last episode, and while Spike takes care of a lot of it in this episode, there is one thing I will always have issue with no matter if things get fixed between them or not: Buffy was kicked out for walking into a trap where Xander lost an eye, despite the fact that she warned them in advance that it was a trap and that things like that would happen in war. Faith is the only one I see who didn't play a part in it and tried to apologize for the fact that it happened. The group replaced Buffy with Faith (dividing them bcause of in-fighting - which is exactly what The First wanted and another thing Buffy warned the group against) who has walked them into an even more obvious trap, when they assumed they were going to find a smoking gun Buffy was telling them was at the vineyard. Are they next going to kick Faith out as well... if they or she is alive to do so, that is? It would be hypocritical if they didn't try. This isn't an actual question. I was being rhetorical because of how The Scoobies (minus Faith, but plus the SIT's) acted towards Buffy in the last episode.
The actor who played the Mayor had just enough tme in a busy schedule to fit this guest apperance in. He actually called them up and said if you can fit me in during this time in a week or two I'll have a small window. The writers re-wrote that part of this episode's script.

Spike even soulless knew what made people tick, but back then he used it maliciously. That's why no one had anything to say when he threw it back at them, they knew they messed up. Faith has never been a "team player", she was on her own most of the time, she's been behind bars and hasn't been a "slayer" for a while now, even if the line runs through her. The first knows that Buffy is its real threat and they are so self-centered that they can't tell that it's tryna isolate her from them. Notice how that night they're finding comfort in "flesh" while Buffy and Spike are just holding each other.

Willow was friends with Tara before their relationship became romantic. They liked each other's personalities, behaviors, even their quirks. They strengthened each other, even when one had to protect the other from herself.
Whereas Kennedy is dislikable as a person. She's nasty, spoiled, and full of herself. She encourages Willow to fall off the wagon, and in not recognizing the danger -- the lesson that Tara lost her life while trying to make Willow learn what she desperately needed to -- is pushing Willow to be her worst self instead of her best self.
But maybe the writers thought that modern audiences would like to see that in a character, reflecting the ideals that they are taught to embody and that would empower them.

I recently discovered that Buffy's original line to Caleb was, "If someone didn't know you, they might think you were a woman-hating prick". But the network made them change "prick" to "jerk", which definitely doesn't have the same punch. That line never sat right with me and now I know why. And if any of you have ever seen Fast Times at Ridgemont High (and if you haven't, go watch now), then you know the power of that word. I didn't catch this on the first watch, but although this episode confirms that Buffy's intuition about the vineyard was correct, it also pretty clearly demonstrates that her military tactics were wrong. The gang were right in not wanting to go back in a full-on assault, as what the situation actually called for was a swift one-woman raid. They still shouldn't have kicked her out of her house though!

Best speech a man can give to a woman for all the points you mentioned. Faith - did you notice how she told Spike during their little fight that she doesn't know where Buffy is? This nuanced tone Eliza put in there, showing that Faith worries about her? Also later on where she wished she would be with them. And First Wilkens pointed it out, that she wants to be loved by Buffy underlines this even more. If i would have money, connections and convincing charisma, i would hire Eliza and Sarah to film a scene similar to this with Buffy and Spike, just to close this open loop.. Don't need to see the clothless part, just the aftermath of it or even only holding each other fully dressed.

I love the juxtaposition in writing, how in this scenario Faith is the only one that wished Buffy was there. She worries about her and she didn't even want to kick her out and was the only one to go after her when Buffy walked out the door. The same Faith that tried so hard in S3 to either take over everything Buffy has, or destroy it.
      Spoiler:
We kind of get a little scene with them, when Faith is still in bed recovering and Buffy shows her the axe. They finally and genuienly understand each other.

Touched was another great episode building up to Chosen and the end of the show. The total breakdown and chaos among the group just bickering and talking over each other and arguing constantly about what to do. When Faith tells Kennedy to shut up, it is highly satisfying. Spike has one of his greatest moments in the show when he finds Buffy after she was banished her from the house. His speech to Buffy is pure and heartfelt, and when Buffy asks him to stay and hold her it is one of the most romantic, intimate scenes in the whole show. In contrast to everyone else who seems to just having sex for instant physical gratification, the Spike/Buffy scene is so much more meaningful as opposed to these. However, an interesting exchange between Faith and Wood before they 'get it on', but the Spike/Buffy scene is so much more emotional. The incredible scene at the end when Buffy finds Mʔ stuck in the rock, it sets up the next episode nicely. Caleb, now knows if she gets her hands on it she will get her revenge on him. A great episode approaching the end of the show, but feel it will be remembered for the Spike/Buffy scene in the house bedroom, where is the writing like this today, this is why so many people keep coming back to shows like BTVS and Angel as the writing and storytelling are so brilliant, and when younger people come across the Buffyverse shows they become totally engrossed in them.

The evolution of Buffy is almost complete. How can this be the same girl dropped off by Joyce on her first day at Sunnydale High ? Superb but how really different are Willow, Xander, and Giles ? Not outwardly but emotionally intelligent and morally mature?
Your reactions are always entertaining and thoughtful. One slight disagreement I have is the difference between Faith and Buffy. It’s more than experience in battle. Buffy has a moral compass that is mostly always true North. Buffy feels blame and sorrow that any Potential has died , but that speaks to her love of all life and her strength to care. It’s not the name of the person (though Buffy beats herself because she doesn’t know theirs) it’s the individual, the love of the living person, Buffy plans for victory in her battles but she always plans for her Army to have defenses. Buffy is always the lead and takes on the biggest and most dangerous herself. That’s not Faith .
Faith and Willow are shown having sex and Buffy is not. You said it best that Buffy is connecting on a different level than before. She is a woman and not depressed. Faith has not come close to separating true love from sex. Willow is satisfying a physical attraction and she is so different than she was with Oz and Tara. Willow is now older but has not gone through the process of becoming a well rounded emotional mature woman.
The last Season gets negative reviews from some fans but the story is about growing older for all and growing up for a few. You asked a question during your reaction to Intervention? You stated, “ Did they ever really know Buffy?” Or Buffy’s question/ statement… then you don’t know what a Slayer is ! The last 2 episodes answered the question, they really do not understand. Buffy is not perfect and has made mistakes. But she has never given up on Willow, Xander, Giles, or Dawn.

This is one of the episodes that I think really redeemed Spike as a character and it's beautiful because it reaches backwards.
One would think having a seeming character reversal from 'Seeing Red' to right now, Spike being the only one of all her friends to be A RIDE!
Buffy's relationship with all the people in that house is special and deep and long or some mixture of those. These are valuable relationships with people that she has established that are stronger than most average relationships. But there comes a time, when the world is basically ending in this case, when ... "heavy is the head that holds the crown" or to speak 😮‍💨 even if it's only one time in a lifetime, She is going to have the memory that Spike was the only person on HER SIDE!!
This allows us to accept earlier season 7 with a more open heart then we might have been going into it, after the episode that I NEVER watch! It's so out of character and horrible at the end of season 6. I literally black it out.

Willow's impossibly lame attempt to justify it shows how even she knows it was indefensible. And, of course, without those actions we would never have had Spike's Speech (for years afterward my BtVS friends and I simply said Spike's Speech and we all knew what we were referring to).

I mean I side with the gang on some level. And spike defending her just comes off as a love sick puppy. I will forever back the sentiment that Buffy didn’t do anything to become the slayer. And we have to remember, even as the show goes on, Buffy still doesn’t see how valuable the svooby gang is. Spike says previously they’re the reason she has lasted thing long. Then he switches up and acts like it isn’t a team effort that has defeated most of what’s come to Sunnydale. While I don’t like the potentials storyline I like the clash that the rest of the gang had with Buffy. Because they sacrifice their lives over and over again voluntarily and with less powers than Buffy. Just because you disagree with Buffy’s tactics sometimes doesn’t mean you dislike her. I feel like you are seeing them with a very narrow lense because you see her as making all the decisions and no one can disagree. And if they do they’re wrong. Well, if the show really is about empowering young people and young women and there being many slayers, then it is essential for them to make democratic decisions and not just blindly follow Buffy. It’s a tough truth.

The writing around this part is rather forced, and it reminds me of the last season of Game of Thrones (not as bad as that last season, but similar flaws). People making stupid and crazy decisions just to force the narrative in a particular direction, and the dialogue gets really unnatural, and I was originally pretty much putting up with it just because I wanted to know how the series ended. It does get better by the end, but I don't want to spoil anything for anyone.

Plot hole: When Spike finds Buffy, he says 'you were right' about something being hidden at the vineyard. Except she only figured that out after Spike had left, so he wouldn't know about that, or her plan to go back there. Whoops! xD

Oh,so *_this_* is a plot hole people detect, but not VampSandy,uh?;-P

@@Nicamon To be fair, with Sandy, there was a lot of off-screen time where she could have potentially been turned, even if it's kind of silly. There is no off-screen moment where Spike could have learned of Buffy's plan to go back to the vineyard, though. 😛

@@othergrimm6592 They explained in ep 1x01 that vampires don't take anyone's"leftovers",that it's _rare_ for vamps to turn humans and that"mostly they're just gonna kill them"and that you can't be already dead if you have to be turned.Sandy was *dead.* Period! VampWill's line explains it,the lore explains it,only the fans are stubborn enough to still deny it after all these DECADES!😵

@@Nicamon not entirely with you there, VampWillow:s plan was to increase the numbers of her followers so it makes perfect sense that she turned Sandy.

@@Henrik_Holst Why does *everyone* forget/ignore what VampWill SAYS when she attacks Sandy???🤦‍♂"If you're all good boys&girls we'll make you young and strong forever and ever. We'll have fun."(AKA we'll turn you into vampires)"IF YOU'RE NOT...(turns and bites Sandy and she drops her on the floor instead of letting Sandy bite her to transform her)"
