  • The BEATLES DRUG SONGS, a slight parody of the 1977 compilation LOVE SONGS, is an ALBUM THAT NEVER WAS featuring the Beatles best psychedelic songs.
    Podcast of this album: bit.ly/3amOit5
    This Pop Goes the 60s podcast adds a third disc making this a triple album! Several different mixes are used, notably from The Beatles Rock Band video game, that include Giles Martin's creating new, cold endings to several songs instead of the common fade out.

    Neither would be likely included in a compilation, but "Revolution 9" and "You Know My Name" both seem like more whacked out drug songs than several of the songs mentioned here (especially "Lovely Rita"). "What's The New Mary Jane" was really their ultimate drug song, though it wasn't officially released until many years after its recording.

      I agree with you Rob. I considered all 3 that you mentioned but I made my inclusions partially based on what I feel EMI / Capitol would have felt appropriate, i.e. erring on the side of the more commercial songs.

    I was born in 1970 and so I was 8/9/10 years old when we bought the the compilations Beatles Love Songs and Beatles Rock 'n' Roll Music. For most of my childhood my whole familiarity with The Beatles' music came down to these two compilations plus the 'Red' and 'Blue' double albums which we had gotten when I was 5 or 6. I guess I can sympathize with your beef, but I can't help but be thankful to these compilations, as there were so many magnificent (and sometimes very famous) Beatles' songs left off the 'Red' and 'Blue' collections that I was introduced to thanks to 'Love Songs' and 'Rock 'n' Roll'. Many wonderful childhood memories thanks to these collections!

    I think Love You To is the most psychedelic song of George's off of Revolver. I would have liked to have seen Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite and Happiness Is a Warm Gun. It has the whole "I need a fix" part, and its lyrics have a certain surreal feel to them, but maybe it's too grim to be psychedelia.

    You might find it interesting to check out this surprisingly psychedelic (1960) record album, considered one of the earlier recordings of the genre, making use of various electronic effects (e.g., reverb, theramin, keyboard effects), combined with dissonance, quarter-tones, and/or notes played deliberately out of tune), . Composer: Joe Meeks; Title: "I Hear a New World." th-cam.com/video/pjyvEf9tZGw/w-d-xo.html
    Paul made it clear that he had taken an early interest in experimental and avant garde music, referring to compositions by Cage, Stockhausen, and others, so it's entirely possible that he was familiar with works by early psychedelic composers, such as Meek.

    I recall the Beatles before they became famous in Britain....they performed in Shrewsbury and were just branching out of Liverpool. My Dad who was about 35 then used to sneak off to Liverpool....he liked how mini skirts did not hide girls stocking tops i dare say.... I was in primary school. I got into Beatles about 1965 with Elemor Rigby and Michelle as their first songs were very simplistic. Then by early 70s got into their psychedelic music. The ability of ethenogens as a means of objectively analysing yourself and the way we process life was pervasive even to young kids and teenagers as I was ....before we left home . Acid wove through EVERYTHING. From pet rocks to my sisters purple mini dress. It wasnt just people who took it....it was in Windmills ofvYour mind....world is like an apple ....which i saw on black white tv performed by Rex Harrisons son....even as a kid I knew wow where did that come from.

    Great concept for a Beatles compilation, the Beatles would have probably called it (at Lennon’s instigating) “Favorite songs of your Grandmother” , or something like that. I agree with Side1, perfect choices. Side 2: Paberback Writer? Side 3: Taxman, Wild Honey Pie? No. Side 4: Hey Bulldog and the End? Not so much. I probably would have gone with Side 2: Being for the benefit of Mr. Kite instead of P. Writer. Side 3: Dr. Robert instead of Taxman. Side 4: You know my name (look up the number) instead of Hey Bulldog. The songs I would replace are more straightforward Rock and Roll and not so much druggy/psychedelic. I agree with almost all of the songs you chose, these few changes would make the collection (I think) more drug/psychedelic oriented. Forgot “Flying” in place Wild honey pie.

    • @popgoesthe60s52
      @popgoesthe60s52  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I do paint with a broad brush. The play on words 'Love Songs' vs 'Drug Songs' was chosen but it's really about psychedelia. I tried to choose material spanning several albums so as not to be too heavily Sgt Pepper/Magical Mystery Tour. I would argue that Wild Honey Pie is as zonked out at they got and songs like Hey Bulldog and The End offer some great late 60s raunchy guitar which wanders into psych. I also tried to alternate lead vocalists and mix up the chronology. I have a link in the description to a podcast where I play the whole thing plus a third disc. Thanks for your comments, they are much appreciated.

    Great topic! I would have tried to find room for Dr. Robert, I’m Only Sleeping, The Word & Day Tripper. Plus ‘I Want To Tell You’ is another candidate with its semi-confused state lyrics and the intriguing chord structure that seems a bit atonal. I recall hearing once that the influences of Beatles albums (generally) could be grouped into the following:
    Amphetamines (over the top energy): Please Please Me, With The Beatles, AHDN;
    pot-influenced: Beatles For Sale, Help, Rubber Soul;
    Acid-influenced: Revolver, SPLHCB, Magical Mystery Tour
    Individually-directed influences: White Album, Let it Be, Abbey Road

    PS when we were young- my friends and I debated if Mother Mary lyric in "Let it Be" was about Marijuana. The Blessed Mother Mary or Paul's s mother. It was his mother's name. Makes one wonder though....

    • @popgoesthe60s52
      @popgoesthe60s52  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually the first lyric was "Brother Malcolm," of which there is video of him singing this and explaining he dreamed about Mal. I think the "Mother Mary" story about it being about his actual mother may be a stretch.

      I was going to mention including the 4 psychedelic photos in a poster inside and I forgot! I'm a designer and I created the graphics and had them printed on large stickers trimmed to the proper size.
      I also purchased blank lp jackets. It's very expensive to print and the gatefolds are hard to assemble. I need some more practice but if my channel continues to grow, I plan to do some giveaways of my Albums That Never Were as part of Patreon donations to my channel. Thank you for the kind words and stay tuned!

    Here's my pitch for "Day Tripper" - and it isn't the title. It's Paul's "Taxman"-like solo mid-song. To me, it puts the song in this category for the same reason "Taxman" itself belongs there. I would also include "Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite," not just for the calliope interlude, though I think that alone is sufficient (I see the song is on the longer podcast track listing).

But it's production is more Burt Bacharach (IMO) So I'd change to Georges I Want to tell you. Also, Blue Jay Way in Paperback Writer out. Great idea and nice execution- design. I just miss 'Yellow Subnarine' that is maybe childish, but its definite reference to the theme. The same goes about 'Fool in the Hill' and ''Good night', so we have besides 'Flying', 'BluebJay Way' and 'Across the Universe and 'The long and winding road' some more songs. All great and appropriate for the compilation. The same goes for 'Something' and'Come together' ??

    I would like have seen the work-in-process version of Revolution #9 - 'Revolution Take 20' on the Drug Songs album. But I feel a good closer for side 4 would be 'You Know My Name (Look up the number)'. Primarily, because of it's Python-esque absurdity and as a closing message as if to say ...'Hey! It's just us. Don't take it too seriously'.

    I always figured The Beatles' psychedelic songwriting begins on their first LP with 'There's A Place', a song every bit as wistful, introspective, and yearning as later songs like 'Julia' or 'In My Life'....speaking of which, I think it's a serious omission to not include anything from Rubber Soul, an album completely suffumigated with the scent of marijuana, just a little bit more explicity than its predecessor Help!
    That said, I'd argue that 'There's A Place' demonstrates that they didn't even need to take psychedelic drugs to create psychedelic music; I guess what I'm saying is psychedelia is a state of being that can exist within you *and* without you, whether you dose yourself or not.

    • @popgoesthe60s52
      @popgoesthe60s52  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great comment. I omitted many songs, some of which I offer in a third disk where I play all 3 on a podcast (see link in video description). I'm pleased to see your mention of There's A Place and the whole marijuana era. I plan to do a video on 'what psychedelic music is' because its subjectivity is so broad. I plan to base psychedelic findings on criteria, which is hard to define when talking about psychedelia.

    Very good choices but I would have omitted the Abbey Road tracks and possibly the awesome 'Hey Bulldog' as well, ( as that's really a straight-up rocker ) and instead, I would have added some of the MMT and Revolver tracks mentioned below. The '69 vibe was musically as well as visually different to the '67 vibe-way less trippy, colorful or happy.

  • @bobh28630

    It may be the current meaning of the word psychedelic is reduced to "weird" -- however, the original use denoted 'mind-expanding'. Accordingly, progressive music, avant-garde visual arts, and cut-up literature could all be accurately perceived as 'psychedelic'. IMHO, John Cage and Kit Opal were the epitome of psychedelic as both enabled the experience of _what is_ sans artifice.
