    I'm working on a t5 right now. It's my first try at a manual transmission. Your videos and book are awesome!

    Our website is 5speeds dot com not 5speed dot com. The problem with people ordering online is that as much as we tell and explain that this is for a WORLD CLASS transmission,we have had to accept returns because they order for a NON WORLD CLASS.If people don't wan't to speak to people anymore (which is how things are going now with texting for example ) they should at least send me an email to confirm certain parts are correct for their application. We do have an extensive online store actually.

    Hey.. Good stuff man.... I will be having another go at fixing my T5z for road racing use at some stage soon... You may be hearing from me. Keep your eyes out for the New Zealand order.

    Hi Paul. I see that you preload the counter gear bearings, which is what I would expect with tapered roller bearings. My copy of the 1991 Borg Warner T5 Service Manual, that I bought in the early 1990s, describes the calculation of the shim thickness so there will be 0.0018 in. of lash (no preload). I always thought that was odd, but that is what I have always used. How much shim preload do you use on the counter gear? or do you just iteratively measure the rotational drag until you reach 3-4 in.lb?

    • @GearBoxVideo
      @GearBoxVideo  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +t5montecarlo I use rotational drag. The books really are not that helpful. Rotational drag is the best method.

    I noticed a lot of the oriental made plates advertise they don’t fit a WC GM trans due to the “thickness of the fifth gear”. Do your support plates work with GM T5s as well as Ford?

    • @GearBoxVideo
      @GearBoxVideo  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Of course. I designed the plate and everyone poorly copied the idea

    You should have an online store. I think some people(DIYers) a less inclined to call than to order through your site.

    I would love more info on the channels for oil in road racing apps. Maybe he could do a video for how to machine those and the ideal dimensions.

  • @judges69

    Well looks like I got screwed!
    I got my parts in Canada but the guy said from USA so I thought I was good to go.
    The holes are bigger like you said, so guessing its from China and its 0.37 inch thick. (how thick are yours?)
    Plus he did not provide shims or even tell me I would have to get some.
    So guess I am going to buy your Shim and Stabizier kit to finish my road race T5
    Is it the peel shim that come in your kit?
    Plus could you provide more info on your channels for oil in road racing apps.
    It sounds like a few people are interested in this mod.
    Thank You for giving quality workmanship to you Trans

      @GearBoxVideo  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      People use .375" thick stock because it is a standard plate size and don't go the extra effort. Mine are made from bar and lathe turned to my dimensions. No point in stating my dimensions so more people can copy my products. The peelable shims ( also something I came up with ) are included along with the bolts and threadlocker. I recommend Royal Purple Synchromax for T5 WC race transmissions. I have used it for years with no issues. I never have mixed it when any heavier weight oil as some people think is necessary. Doing a video on oils would be nice but from past history it just leads to people slamming one another because they think there oil is better than someone elses. There is a great deal of marketing hype done purposely on forums to sell certain brands. The oils, tools and any products you see in my videos are not endorsements or paid adverts.

    • @judges69
      @judges69 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      GearBoxVideo Thanks for the reply,
      Sorry, did not mean for you to say your actual thickness, just your opinion if what I had was to thick.
      Not that it matters now cause I will buy from you now that I understand the quality difference.

    I really enjoy your knowledge and willingness to share I thank you,do you have a website for any parts and or upgrades? I currently have a T5 with the G force internals and I love it I love banging gears and people like yourself keep me motivated to keep on banging them....thanks Lee Hinson...

    I guess the only thing to make it better would be adding dowl pins , but that could weakenthe case around the bearing. Or use bolts with a slight shank to center the plate, looks like you have a near perfect design, if I get around to building my t5, I'll be looking you up. Even if I don't put it back in my f-body, I may do the S-10 tail, and put the trans in a truck, chevy with 250 6 banger! Great video, china copys everything! Even cars!

    • @GearBoxVideo
      @GearBoxVideo  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The plate locates and centers on the bearing. No need for dowels.

    Astro performance sells this, is their version worth it? Astro is a pretty well known company for t-5s and they have this for sale for a very good price.
    Also, do you sell the caged bearings seprately for the t-5? The rebuild kit I got does not have a single one,and it would be nice to replace them

    • @GearBoxVideo
      @GearBoxVideo  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They sell a Chinese copy of my part. They have never designed anything on their own. I do have caged needle bearings for the T5 WC sold individually. Call me at 561-743-5600. Thank you. I designed the plate and both the plate and shims are made in USA

    I wonder if the Modern Driveline or Ford Racing (same model) T5Z has an upgraded cluster support plate since it's rated at 330ft lbs??

    • @GearBoxVideo
      @GearBoxVideo  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Modern Driveline uses our plate. Ford units still use the stock stamped steel piece.

    Anyway, cool product!

    Will oily gears effect the drag rating? I am planing on changing this out in my case that has had oil in it. I only plan to drain the oil then install this plate.

    • @GearBoxVideo
      @GearBoxVideo  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, because the oil is very light

      GearBoxVideo what should we shoot for on a drag torque with bearings say we have run from new for about 250 miles? I would assume my bearing are already seating so I was thinking to shoot for 2 in lbs

    I mentioned before on another video I have a T5 I am installing into a 84 camaro. Could you tell me roughly what this plate races the hp and torque limits of the transmission to? Currently the car is powered by an 2.5l l4 but i've considered the 3800 as a swap. I was also wondering what the comparison of limits on the normal t5 is with this plate vs the wc.

    • @GearBoxVideo
      @GearBoxVideo  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It doesn't. It just keeps the countergear from getting end play. Factory retainers stretch under load. It is only for a WC application.

    • @1InfinityShade
      @1InfinityShade 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok. The durability under high rpms is the factor of interest for me. Is it true the difference in wc t5s and nwc t5s is just the design one vs wc design 2. Would it be safe to assume any late model t5s (for example the one i purchased from a 92 3.1l firebird. Or simply the fact its 3.1l powered.) would be design 2? An inspection of bearing races would confirm wc or nwc correct?

      @@GearBoxVideo the stabilizer is out of stock, I was wondering when it will be available, and asked in a poor way.
      I've got a t5 that makes a whining noise in third gear, and since I got it freshly rebuilt that tells me the bearing retainer is probably slightly egg shaped and needs this installed.

    Why cant you make one for the nwc ?

    • @GearBoxVideo
      @GearBoxVideo  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's coming. Transmissions have to actually be purchased and time set aside to make FREE videos. Unless they come into my shop for a rebuild. Recently I purchased one. Takes about 10 hours to shoot and edit a video. Try and understand that.
