To anyone who likes the idea of onion knight but wishes they had abilities- the tactics league pvp patch gave onion knight a fair amount of abilities that make them way more interesting. Great video as always Mikey!
Thank you so much for mentioning Tactics League, Dr Jay! I'm an idiot for not mentioning the PVP patch, smh. They have usable skills and their innate abilities bolster them appropriately, and honestly they are pretty tough to overcome. 💪
I feel slow for asking, but how about reequip? I saw Balthier is broken going from gun to Excalibur at close range, even at an extra turn, and it let me manhandle disorder in the order to get the Kaiser shield I needed while killing the useless ninja and squires (flame shield has blaze gun heal after taking out glacial gun ya got earlier). Closing in with that onion sword given the low move can be scary like a tonberry (kinda rhymed), but hope you guys added reequip for them, though the other innates are great and make sense, though I’d prefer attack boost to keep my shield. Double shield would be a funny implement, like ff2 pixel remaster that lets ya attack and have ultimate go unimpeded by magic interference (or low boosts/encounters). I know ff3 Viking had some do it but he couldn’t attack, so it’s kinda boring. Still, even without those 2 (and ya got counter, doublehand and even brawler) dual wield Excalibur and Durendal adding haste, protect, shell and innate parry is pretty hectic, and worth the trade-off for flexibility with you max equipment players (which yeah I forgot about female exclusive chantage/tynar rouge once I saw stuff like grand armor/brave suit to not care about onion armor (which its gimmick isn’t worth a replay let alone mastery, which glad pvp bypasses lol) or gender equality hacks (even Cloud is foolproof like a vampire cat/dark behemoth standing by Reis).
I have been playing FFT since the 2000 and just recently finally got it again and finding this channel definitely got me a lot more exited to play the game as I did back in my youth ❤
So glad to hear you're rediscovering FFT! Every time I've played it's been a unique experience, and I think you'll quickly be reminiscing about past playthroughs. I'm humbled to hear the channel connected with you, and I appreciate you stopping by and sharing your experience! 🙏 Take care and we'll see you in the next video!
Onion Knight class is like that kid you thought would never achieve anything in life just to encounter them some years later being x100 times more successful than anyone.
You have done a great service to the FFT community and fanbse. I had forgotten how fun many of these jobs could be! Not the Onion Knight though. A quasi invincible unit with only attack commands is very boring.
Thanks so much PK! 🙏 Haha you had me in the first half... But yeah for a unit that really takes a boat load of grinding to fully manifest, just being able to equip everything doesn't feel like a great reward. That said, I'm somewhat of a completionist and I can't resist the challenge to get a true Onion Knight! 😂
Haha now the pressure is on! 😅 I am also looking forward to these, as I don't really have a firm grasp on a lot of special abilities, like Holy Sword, so getting a better grip on this info should help build better uniques! Thanks so much for your continued support Forrest! 🙏
I wish Onion Knight was more interesting but I still like it's addition. i have an idea if they ever re-attempt Onion Knight in a sequel or remaster. This would absolutely break the game but it would be cool if you could choose what the two action ability slots would be, or potentially make it 3 if unit is a true Onion Knight. Let them utilize the Re-Equip ability which doesn't eat an action up on a unit's turn. Other idea would be similar, one or two action abilities, and then having another be the Onion Knight abilities. Onion Abilities could be randomized every turn the unit takes. Like one turn, Onion Knight has access to Black Magic, the next could be Throw, the next could be Iaido etc.
That random ability idea is super cool, CT, I love it! I will never understand the thinking behind mastering every Job then getting rid of their abilities! 🤯 But I do enjoy the theorizing and suggestions for fixes, a lot of that drives the changes to the PVP patch at Tactics League, where Onion Knights actually have a skillset, but you still can't customize the ability load out and are stuck with your innates: Dual Wield, Brawler, Concentration and Counter. Still, a huge improvement without taking away the 'flavor' of the job. 👍
@@TacticsLive Thank you, I also thought it was neat when I was thinking about it. There's just so much Square Enix could do with the Onion Knight job class to make it feel more like the Onion Knight from the main line series and Dissidia. I think Re-Equip would come in handy with the random abilities each turn if it doesn't eat an action up. I'd love to be able to switch from a sword to a gun or to a lance. Just depending on what the situation called for
#question? Will you be able to talk about the special classes? I’m curious to see how each special class works and does in the state department. 🧐🧐🧐🧐🧐🧐
Yes, definitely! I will be getting started on the Unique characters after the tournament, so stay tuned! I just had a chat about how they work in PVP in case you're interested. 👍
I just wanted to point out that it's not necessary to master EVERY job in order to unlock the TRUE Onion Knight. You have to master 14 job classes, but Squire/"base" job, Chemist, and Dark Knight do NOT count towards this. (Neither does Mime because no abilities, obviously) So in practicality, you must master all but two of the other jobs available to any unit, including Bard/Dancer. Not quite EVERY job, although it's close enough. IF I go for a TRUE Onion Knight, I usually skip mastering Summoner/Arithmetician as both jobs have low base speed stats and require a LOT of JP to master. Bard or Dancer are easier to master in my opinion than either of those classes. Just thought I'd share this for any other fans who might not be aware of this! Great video though! Love the channel, which I just recently found.
Thanks JR, you're absolutely right, mastering ALL jobs isn't necessary to Master the Onion Knight. And on top of that it's difficult to take advantage of the insane growth stats, so it's really a task for the most determined tactics players. 🥲
If you learn all the abilities in all the other jobs I imagine that youd be maxed out to 99. How do you take advantage of the stat growth without deleveling?
That's a great question, I'll do my best to give you good info. 👍 I would say lean on passive JP to level up Jobs you don't want stat growth from. Say you want higher PA, stay as a Knight or Dragoon and have your generics level as casters so you can level as those, albeit at a slower rate.
Delevel any unit not Ramza, steal exp on Ramza, move accrue jp, adrenaline rush, spillover jp. Working on level 1 Ramza to 99 with only onion knight levels
Very good video as usual but yeah just like everyone I think the onion knight is by far the biggest let down in WOTL along with the slowdown. But hey at least they look cool in terms of fashion lol
Thanks J7Jase! I wish I could at least play devil's advocate and work an angle on these guys to make them worthwhile, but alas, I am unable. 😥 If we are talking pure fashion sense I'd put them in a close second to the male geomancer 👉👑
I had no idea it had multiplayer, Qvmmy, thank you for the suggestion! I will try to do some research into it over the next couple months, because I have been wanting to try out different games. My fear is losing some of the core audience and splitting my time between creating content, and since FFT is my OG love and passion I think focusing my energy there will produce a better product in the end. That said, I am curious, intrigued, and willing to give it a try if there is enough interest, so thank you for the suggestion! 💪
@@TacticsLive Thank you! I have been playing this game non stop since downloading it a few days ago. It’s been 25 years since I last played it during high school, so many great memories.
.... on android, i think i can't level up the onion knight, you unlocked as "mastered"... so, if you mastered all the other jobs onion knight start with full power or since is already mastered the full power was disabled?
Onion Knights come unlocked as Mastered because they have no skills. Mastering other Jobs increases the Onion Knights Job level - you would unlock the OK well before mastering other Jobs, but essentially the answer is yes: If you master every other Job you will have a level 8, True Onion Knight. 👍
@@TacticsLive ok, thanks 😁👍, 2 more things i want to ask... about the de-level trap, i wrote the question on your other video, but i ask here anyway 😋... if you de-level a weak job (a bard/dancer) several times in the same battle (at least 10 times) when you level it up again with a better job (like mime), will the stats improve you de-leveled???? Or have to be done level by level (de-level/level up), because i saw the stats and look the same, idk if 10 levels were too much for a single battle. The second question, if you master a job before reaching lvl 8, could you still level it up??? Because you dont see the next level JP requirement anymore
@@doblea2 In my Super Stats video I explain that will need to level all the way to 99, back down to 1, and repeat this several times to see dramatic changes - you won't see a difference with just 10 levels. ☝ For Job mastery the levels don't matter, just that you learn all of the skills. The levels are there for unlocking other Jobs like Mime or Dark Knight, and you reach higher levels by accumulating JP. Level 2 needs 200 JP, Level 3 needs 400 JP, etc. 👍

Agreed! I think at the very least, since they are weapons masters, Re-equip as an innate passive skill so you can change up your tactics mid battle if need be. With such huge stat boosts you could start with a bow and switch to a knight sword for constant physical damage that's super high. Oh well, that would have been nice. 🥲
@Tactics Live Tournament what I would do to try and improve this class: Have it able to equip abilities obviously, but my main improvement would be for it to act like the Freelancer class from FFV. able to equip any of the skill set of the other jobs in both their main and secondary slots without the need to change into said class. The unit would need to master the class first though in order to equip it on to the main slot
That... would actually be amazing and would drive me to want to get a True Onion Knight so my stats would actually come into play! What am I supposed to do with a buffed up MA or MP stat if I'm not casting at all? Maybe for weapons like staves, books, and cloths; but at that point there are much better PA-based melee options. 🙅
Do a drive by on chocobo with an elemental gun (which benefits from range/magic attack in thread let alone elemental boosts).
