Celestial Elixir should be listened from the live version imo. And Crystallised is definitely some acquired taste. First time I listened, I hated both of the songs above. They now are among my fav ever songs :)

This is my favorite prog band out there currently for me. Each album they have given different twists and stylistic changes. Nothing major, but enough to notice each time. I agree with others below. Crystalised is a hell of a track to check out as well. Long also, but so worth it. If not another long one I really enjoyed the track 1985 from their album Affinity.

Celestial Elixir may not be my favorite song from the record, but it depicts very well what Haken was some years ago. Less experimental and electronic, more organic and beautiful.
You guys are love. I want to mention something, though -- with all due respect to the lovely viewers here... sometimes people aren't good at suggesting songs for people that are *just getting into* a particular band. While this is one of the climaxes of one of their greatest albums, it also needs to come in context with the album (similar to Tool or Dream Theater). There are better standalone songs. The album The Mountain should be listened to in full. I promise you will love it, and you'll have an EVEN BETTER opinion of this track when you listen to it :)
And yes, your comments about the time it takes to like Haken is correct! You both seem to have musical backgrounds, so you'll probably go faster than most, but this is the singular reason they're not more popular. Very complex, very intimidating. :) Enjoy the journey.

Dense is the word I use. When listening to Haken, my older 👂 always hears 3 bands( besides DT)....King Crimson, Yes , and Emerson Lake and Palmer. Most modern prog bands( especially prog metal) shy away from major keys, even discordant ones....they tend to keep to minor or exotic model progressions. That wasn't the case with 70s prog, that took from classical, modern, and jazz....

It's me again... I love Haken, they use 8 string guitars, which gives them the ability to play very low tones. One of their guitar players go back and forth from guitar to keyboards, they are REALLY GOOD musicians... Can I suggest another song? I think Haken guys are definitely not pretentious. I've seen them live twice and I have seen their live DVD and I believe they really like what they are playing - even all those strange, unmelodic parts :-)

To recommend some others of theirs, for something shorter The Endless Knot, or two of their other epics, Crystallised or Visions. I'm going to #painintheask lol - Cellar Darling - Insomnia. You need some hurdy gurdy in your lives, admit it! They're a Swiss folk metal band made up of three ex-members of Eluveitie (another band you should check out - try the song King!).
I'm visiting them in Istanbul soon! Let's hope that they play the Argentine setlist here in Europe too! (Not gonna list the songs in case you dont want them to be spoiled)
