    I have had quite a few questions about how I set my roaster up so I thought I would put this video together. I spent a little more time talking about venting because that is what most of the questions are about. Wood Pellet Stove Pipe is what "B Vent" seems to be called. Always be sure to check your local regulations before setting up your roaster so you don't get any surprises. I noticed my end cap placement needed to be turned 90 degrees!
    If there are other questions about my roaster setup you can ask them here. Thanks for watching and be sure to subscribe to my channel.

    It's great to see your setup and I may be stealing some of your ideas. Hope you won't mind, ha. You have a well-thought-out arrangement for roasting, nicely done. I'm roasting in my wood shop on top of the table saw so I must set up and take down for every roast. A bit of a pain but serviceable until I can find a more permanent solution. I appreciate the links to products too, most helpful. Thanks!

    It was really fun to look back on your videos and watch this one and see your setup. It looks really nice, and organized. When you were first looking at roasters, I saw your list in the previous video, did you not consider a Bullet? The MCR is a great machine and first saw them a few years ago when I was watching Blk City Roasters channel when she transitioned from a Hottop to a MCR.

      I still have the MC500 and plan to bring it back out. I love that roaster. It has been a workhorse for me. I did a roasting session that lasted over 12 hours. When I was in the market for a roaster the Bullet wasn't on my radar. Not sure why but it might have been because it was electric. I also liked the fact that Mill City support was in the USA and i could talk with someone. I also liked the training they offered on their campus.

    Hey Mike, have you ever done a video on how you setup Artisan?

    • @VirtualCoffeeLab
      @VirtualCoffeeLab  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Steven. I have not done a video about setting up artisan. The best source for that would be the artisan-scope setup page. There are many variable base on how you are connecting and the type of roaster you have. Sorry about that.

      @@VirtualCoffeeLab Yeah, they have a ton of information. but no examples of how folks setup some of their stuff, like in one of your videos it shows up with text boxes at the end of the roast with information you put in about the roast. they show up on the right side. I don't know how to do that. but I will keep looking.
      thanks.

      When you end your roast, be sure to save it. Then when you look at that roast you will see the summary with the phase percentages.

    I love your set up! I have decided to start doing some home roasting. I just ordered from Sweet Maria the new Behmor 2000 AB plus roaster, some sample green coffee beans and some supplies. I assume it will take at least a week until it all arrives.

      @Eduardo Godoy, Congratulations on your roaster. You are in for a real treat. I love the behmor and you will have many hours of learning and enjoying that unit. I did a video on a manual roast for the Behmor and it covers the entire roast. th-cam.com/video/eetPHabQTt4/w-d-xo.html Have you done any roasting in the past? Be sure to read the instructions about how to extend your roast time. I remember my first roast was set at 12 minutes based on the settings I selected and the coffee didn't roast long enough. Also keep in mind that when you hit the cool button, it will still stay really hot and your coffee will continue to roast for maybe another minute. You will want to keep that in mind so you can time how far you want your roast. It's all personal taste and you will figure it out. It may take a few pounds of coffee though.... Good Luck and let me know how it goes!

      @@VirtualCoffeeLab I saw your video on the Behmor on manual mode. As I indicated I plan to use the automatic modes for a while until I get some experience. I have never roasted any Coffee beans before. Sweet Maria Coffee just notified me that my Behmore should arrive via UPS next Tuesday February 9. I have also just ordered the coffee you had on your link from Nicagua ( Primos) on Amazon. I ordered the 4 lbs that contains two different types of beans. In your comment above you indicated that in the automatic mode its likely that the time will not be enough. I prefer a Medium roast on my beans. I was planning on setting to roast 1/2 lbs not the full pound. How long should I then add to the roast if I use the automatic settings? Thanks again!

    Hello Mike! I know this is a older video, but how did you increase the pressure of your natural gas line, usually is 1.7kpa. My new roaster requires 3 Kpa. Did you install any device for increasing the pressure? Thank you for your time!

    • @VirtualCoffeeLab
      @VirtualCoffeeLab  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Chavi, what roaster do you have that requires 3 Kpa? Are you saying that because the gauge goes up to 3 Kpa? My gas pressure has never been higher than 1.8 at my house. This pressure gives me full power with no issues. I have restricted my pressure to max at 1.2 using a regulator because my gas valve on the roaster was very sensitive to changes while i was in the lower ranges of my heat. By restricting the pressure, i have greater incremental control. I have also installed a larger gauge with a range of 0-2 Kpa which gives me much better visual control as I make adjustments. Take a look at any of my more recent videos of my drum roaster and you will see two gauges. You will also notice the regulator on the wall to the left of the roaster.
      Hope that helps.

      @@VirtualCoffeeLab Thank you so much for finding the time to respond to my question. I am ordering Yoshan 1.5 kg roaster, that I would like to install in my basement. I want to use natural gas, but Yoshan is saying, that the roaster requires at least 3 Kpa for natural gas. I am not sure what to do.

    • @VirtualCoffeeLab
      @VirtualCoffeeLab  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      One other factor I forgot to mention is the "orafice" size. Basically the gas flows from your valve (you control the flow) , through a brass "jet" and into the diffuser which distributes the gas in a circle. The jet is a brass nut with a very small hole drilled through it. The size of that hole makes a big difference in your gas flow. My roaster came setup for propane so i had to drill the holes bigger for the natural gas. I would do some research and or talk with Yoshan about this and see what they say. I know others who have a yoshan. Shane Wilson on this channel has one i think. You could ping him and ask what his max gas pressure is. There is also another guy on youtube who has a yoshan and roasts in his garage. You could ask him as well. Lastly, I would have to believe there is a yoshan facebook page or some sort of support page you could connect with.

      @@VirtualCoffeeLab Yoshan is saying that they have different burners for propane and natural gas. I asked them to send me both, but I don't want LPG in my basement and the garage is very cold in the winter. The red 5 channel guy redrilled bigger holes in his burner in order to make it work for natural gas. I will void the warranty if I do that. I don't want to be toying with brand new roaster. Maybe I can ask for elevated pressure in my house. Thank you very much for your time! I love your videos! 😊

    I just started home roasting with a Hottop Coffee Roaster KN-8828B-2K+ a few months ago and already I’m thinking about upgrading to a bigger better roasted. In my search for informational videos, I came across your channel. Are you still satisfied with your MCR500? Great setup!

      Hi Jerry, yes, I’m still happy. My roaster is a 2017 version. They have made some improvements to the electronics as well as others. You may also want to look at the bullet from Ailio. What is your endgame with the roaster? Are you aiming to sell or just for personal use?

      @@VirtualCoffeeLab I’m mainly interested in roasting for family and friends with the ability to provide my son and daughter-in-law with custom coffee orders for their small CBD shop. I looked at the Aillio Bullet Roster R1 V2 but wasn’t eager to go that route because I’m not comfortable with parts and service support. The customer training, support, and parts in stock at Mill City Roasters has really impressed me to this point. I started getting interested in espresso and other coffee drinks and methods about 6 years ago and it has evolved into a very serious obsession.

      you will really enjoy the experience of a commercial "sample" drum roaster. Great for sharing roasts, special events and batch sizes ranging from 300 grams to 600 grams. My only complaint about my roaster is the rear bearing is almost impossible to reach so in order for me to change out the bearing I have to almost tear down the entire roaster. Havn't done that yet but it needs to happen soon. The bearings only cost ten bucks but it is a pain. I've replaced my front bearing several times. Only takes a few minutes.

      @@VirtualCoffeeLab Hi and thank you for responding! I have a little electric metal drum roaster that I set over a portable camp stove with a capacity of 600g but the sweet spot is between 450-500g. It's been great for my home based business but I'm looking to expand so I'm looking at different roasters. I'd like to open my own cafe and roastery and not sure what size to start with. I usually order from Smokin Beans! I love your set up and would lime to do something like that when I do get a commercial roaster until I can open up shop.
