Playing "horizontally" doesn't clearly define the chord. Playing "vertically" is a stronger identifier of the chords. This is why I began teaching chord tones thirty years ago to bass players. They are trustworthy in art, not so much in soloing, and should be ignored when playing walking lines. Learning is specific and I am always encouraged knowing how much everyone can improve their bass playing if they embrace this. Thanks for your thoughts Steven.
Joe and I are kindred spirits. I admire him a lot because he chooses to only teach music as I do. I love teachers that recognize how necessary music is to being taught well.
I get that 100% lumpyjazz. Zero bs with Joe & there's so much depth to even his 'simplest' videos. He makes me think musically. I wish I'd had a teacher like that when I started 40yrs back!!! Keep well..;-))
I am glad that you picked up on that. This is why I am influenced by teachers of music who assigned me bits of of musical and academic perfection (small and large) to practice. The concept simply has no flaws to it as far as I can see.
This is so good. Thank you, Sir.
I don’t even play bass but will definitely work on these patterns. I love the way Jeff approaches teaching always informative and inspiring.
Thank you Randal. Good luck with your practice.
Love how you summarised why reading is important. That was imho the very essence of what you are about. Very compelling.
Thank you,Jeff!
My pleasure George.
Top man this Jeff Berlin!
Awwwwwwww, HECK! :)
That was cool Jeff, thank you for musical content.
Thanks Jeff!
Enjoy, Ed!
Fantastic lessons. Thanks from Spain.
Horizontalness, yes. Love your style of teaching Jeff.

I've not seen the Ascending video but will go & find it. Was this in my recommended list because I learn so much from Joe Hubbard?!

"The music tells me what to do." - Jeff's method in one sentence.
