His orchestra plays to stadium-sized crowds around the world, presenting classical music with a Disneyland twist, and his tours earn almost as must as Lady Gaga's - and more than Justin Bieber's. Richard Roth takes us to meet the Dutch violinist and conductor who lives up to his nickname, "The waltz King."

I've been to the Maastricht gig and the variation on the crowed you see there is mind blowing, from Football (soccer) Hooligan type guys to elderly couples and young parents with their kids to early 20's couples on a first date. Simply amazing and I hope to go to a gig again.

I have known about Andre and been a big fan since 1994. His concerts are so much fun. Went to his concert in Detroit in September with my grandchildren, So much fun, everyone leaves his concerts smilling.

Never in this life time did I ever love classic music as today
My mother often listened to classical music during the day - local station - the likes of Richard Clayderman and traditional orchestras. This music was lost on me as I left home and tried on music my peers were listening to (which wasn't allowed at home). Then as I was going through a marriage breakdown, and interacting with folk who were into classical, I started listening again. Started recognizing some of the artists my mother listened to and checking them out more closely as well as others. Now that I have them, I'll keep them. :D

I first heard of him on PBS more than 12 years ago and then I got to see him live with my 3 yr old daughter at Radio Music City Hall and had the best time. I have a collection of his CDs and DVDs and my kids love his music. He is truly a genius!

I don't think that Andre is an unknown musician. He is extraordinary violinist who bring joy, smiles and happiness to everybody who sees his videos and hear his music. I love classical music, so i don't care about Lady Gaga or Justin Bieber,, who by the way i can't stand. Keep doing what you do Andre. The world needs you! Many blessings for you and your orchestra.

In Brazil tickets for 3 first presentations were sold in 5 days and now he will perform 12. São Paulo may/june 2012
There are 14 nationalities in his orchestra , but majority of coure are dutch.
The male and female solists are minority dutch, mostly various nationalities e.g. Brasilian, South African; Belgian, Polish, Hungarian, Australian and since 2019 tour also Chinese.
The annual concert in Maastricht are in fact 12 contiguous concerts ( 2019 ) with far over 100.000 visitors from 85 different countries all over the world )
All dresses are tailormade in tripple, because there are always 2 sets on the move troughout the world on its way to the next concert.
He is also wellknown to give talented solists a breaktrough .
And indeed : Maastricht is far away from the windmills as it is nationwide known the most french town of the Netherlands.
The secret recipe of Andre Rieu was not really unvealed in this video ( which dates from 2012) : a mix of classic and popular mucic always spiced with local broadly known national melodies : so a concert in Australia differs from one in Brasil.

1:42 Maastricht is not in Holland, it’s in Limburg or simply in the Netherlands. It’s like referring to the US as Florida or California. These are simply states of the US, not the country itself
You are technically correct. I live in the US and when I say I'm originally from The Netherlands most people don't know what country that is. Say you're from Holland and they do know that one a bit more often. I think most Europeans have trouble naming all 27 member states of the EU. More than 40% of Americans can't write down all 50 states within 20 minutes.
Technically Holland are only the two biggest (population wise) provinces but 'Holland' has become synonym for The Netherlands especially outside Europe. For example: 'We' enter the Olympics under the name The Netherlands, but what is the name of the house were all medals are celebrated? 'Hup Holland Hup' and ''Viva Hollandia' are classical Dutch soccer anthems., not to mention 'De hollandse school' (Dutch school), a term to describe a certain playing style of soccer Only a few months ago the Dutch Tourism Board stopped using holland.com as its primary website for their campaigns.. Due to the pandemic you most likely don't go on vacation outside The Netherlands. But next time you go to a foreign land, listen how often people claim to be from Holland instead of The Netherlands..

YOU don't know him that well, doesn't mean others don't either.
Unknown to the masses is what they obviously meant. Because that is the truth about Andre Rieu. Sad really since the man deserves so much more exposure and respect.
The man has concerts all over the world, EVERY year. Playing for thousands and thousands of people. People that aren't interested won't know him. The same with me not knowing maybe very famous pop artists who give concerts all over the world, but that doesn't mean they're unknown. They're just unknown to me.
I think they say that because he doesn't play classical music in the traditional way. I've read some comments from some of the traditional classical tastes. They feel Andre is disrespectful to the Great Classical Composers and especially to Johann Straus. I think he takes what those Composers gave the world and fills those pieces with joy and happiness. Were those composers alive today, I like to speculate they'd experience more joy and happiness as well. People don't have to sit in their seats with their backs straight and chins forward, not moving a muscle. People can laugh and dance and make merry. That's how life should be. And after a long evening of good clean revelry, they go home and have the most wonderful sleep ever. This helps people live longer, healthier lives and if not, at least with more joy.
