    It was only the 8th largest deficit, but I think what makes this so special is the amount of time in which they pulled it back. The fact that they were 52 points down with 5 mins to go in the third quarter, they essentially turned that lead around in 1 quarter of footy. As a Lions fan, in the fan pages etc on facebook, this is probably one of our most talked about and reminisced about moments in recent history.

      I'd also add the fact that Geelong were either first or second on the ladder and Brisbane were well below them. (I think Brisbane finished 12th).
      The Brisbane comeback seemed to come out of nowhere and surprise everyone.

    Drawn finals have a funny history. They used to always allow the game to be replayed the next week. This happened with a grand final in 1948 and one in 1977 (both of those being VFL obviously). No one minded much, since there was nothing on the next week anyway
    But in 1990 there was a drawn qualifying final in the first week of the series and they committed to pushing the rest of the fixture back by a week which caused chaos, so from 1991 they instituted an extra time rule which adds two 5 minute halves to the end of any drawn final, EXCEPT grand finals.
    In 2010 there was another drawn grand final between Collingwood and St Kilda, which was replayed, but in 2016 the AFL decided to ensure that it was the last drawn AFL final and instituted the extra time rule for ALL finals including grannys.
    At that time they also added that if it was still drawn after the two extra periods the game would go to golden point with any score by either team earning them the victory and ending the game but they removed this in 2020 without it ever being used
    The rule now stands at two 3 minute halves (with teams switching ends) of extra time, followed by any additional 3 minute periods required to break the deadlock.
    The most recent drawn final was in 2017 when the extra time length was still 5 minute halves, I’ll link it, and the drawn 2010 grand final below

      My dad was very unhappy with the 1948 granny. The Dons led by13 points with minutes to go, and conceded those 13 points to tie 7.27 to 10.9. Full-forward kicked 2.11, then lost the replay. Won easily in 1946, lost in the last 40 seconds by 1 point, again bad kicking 11.19 to 13.8. Coleman arrived 1949 and they won in 1949 and 1950, then Coleman suspended for retaliation in 1951 and lost by 11 points. Could have been 6 in a row. Coleman hurt his knee in 1954 and never played again. It’d be an 8-week injury these days.

I certainly remember his coaching days…2 flags in 6 years. Hated umpires with a passion. He’d fit in today…particularly after last night. Not good enough to win, but gee, we didn’t get the rub of the green. Very inconsistent display of umpiring. Some blatant frees missed…on one side.

    This one hurt the commentator, Anthony Hudson. He's a very avid Geelong fan and supporter. But his comment about "The miracle on grass" is a nod to the 1980 Olympics where the Russia hockey team was supposed to be this unbeatable, irresistible, 4-time defending gold medalist team that somehow, someway, the USA Hockey team beat them. That match was called "The Miracle on Ice". During this match, Geelong was on its way up, while Brisbane was on its way down after having won 3 consecutive premierships. Brisbane was given no chance of winning this, and then this happens.

    Not sure if you've watched it yet, but you should check out the song 'Up there Cazaly' by Mike Brady. A short song released in 1979/80 used as a TV intro and backing song during highlights.
    To onlookers it may not mean much, but to someone who was a kid at the time, it is a huge nostalgia hit, and still brings chills when I watch it.
    The players featured are legends of the game, and sends me back to a time when all games were played on Saturdays, when my parents would pack up the car every Saturday and go to watch our local team play in our country league, and when you and your mates would run out onto the ground between quarters to either have a kick on the ground, or go and listen to the coach give the players a spray if they weren't playing well.
    When if you owned a fair dinkum Sherrin, you'd be the king, because most of us could only afford some cheap footy from the local sports shop. I remember going for a kick at our local ground as a 9 year old and feeling 10 feet tall because I was having a kick for goal in the same spot as the big boys did for the senior team.
    It was a great era to grow up in, and even though the modern game is great, it's just not the same as it once was.
    The mark by Alex Jesaulenko (black and white footage) at the 1.28 mark is the quintessential aussie rules speccie. Awesome.

This was round 13 & Geelong were the top of the table (thrashing a lot of teams this season 40-50pt victories) and Lions were 12th on the ladder. Unfortunately Geelong got their revenge a few weeks later in round 23 by beating the Lions by 1 point.

    Heard an English journalist who settled in Australia say he made the decision to stay when he saw football supporters from both sides happily drinking together after a match in Sydney. It would have been one of the rugby codes. It was a shock to him after what was happening back home in the 1980s. There are brawls of course, mostly associated with soccer as we call it. Soccer in Australia had its roots in ethnic clubs and there can be tensions that are unrelated to the sport. In 2019, the last season unaffected by COVID, 27 AFL fans were banned for their behaviour. That is out of the 7 million plus fans who attended games.

  • @BD-yl5mh

    First I guess? Such an awesome game this one. And for Ash McGrath to be the one to ice it in his 250th after being such a great servant of the club, right from their successful ‘01 to ‘03 three peat and then through the relatively lowly ‘05-‘15 period
    Also, though only the 8th biggest comeback, (might have slipped to 9th or 10th by now from some googling I just did), this one felt particularly magical because it was a lowly team overcoming a much better team. Comebacks often happen when a good team has a slow start to a game against a weaker side and then they switch it on after half time to win. Also, some of the biggest comebacks started somewhere in the second quarter. In 2001 the bombers came back from 64 (I think) points down but that was after a freakish 1st quarter from the kangaroos. So it was a slightly bigger margin to over come but they did it much more slowly. Also, scoring generally used to be higher until roughly 2000-2005 defensive game styles became more and more prevalent, so a 52 point margin in this era of the game is actually monstrous, whereas in relative terms, scoring 60+ points in the 70s might not have been as hard
    Also, a bunch of the bigger ones than this are from the 70s or earlier and they don’t quite feel the same to watch as a modern viewer
    Also Chris Scott, coach of Geelong in this game, and to this day, played for the lions during their 3peat era so that even adds an extra little bit of intrigue to this contest

    A few others have mentioned this but the reason why this is regarded as arguably the best comeback is because every other comeback that was bigger... the winner had over a half of footy to claw back the defecit. Brisbane had a qtr (its the equivalent of being 3 - 0 down in football with 15 mins to go and winning). Plus Geelong won the premiership that yr, brisbane was a bottom 4 team, kicks after the siren to win are VERY rare (about 200 in 140 yrs of vfl/afl footy), and kicks after the siren to a guy on a milestone? Yeah that happened once

    Hey mate. You should totally rewatch from 3:10 onwards. It was way more then just a 60 metre kick. For a team to get a goal from centre bounce in 9 seconds from the bounce then the ruck hits it down to a mid fielder then dodges a player then kicks it from 60 is just like so amazing!! . This is how superstars are born But very hard to do
    That is what the coaches want every centre bounce to be like but doesn’t always happen of course and Due to the other team they have learnt how other players play the game when there at training . So they can read what other players will be doing not just the once they should be on the whole match for . But can get away quickly if they are not on there man .
    This is a new 6 6 6 rule that has come in. So you can only have 6 in the fullbacks 6 in the forwards and 6 in Your midfield but back in the day you could have players basically anywhere you wanted on the field. There would of been two more players in the middlefeild. Could of been two players on one player like lance franklin. So that’s another thing. They call it a tag. So it means you mite have one or two on one player but your job is basically about then and make them play the worst game. Sometimes it works somtimes it makes the player even better Also there was even a rule when they do a jump ball after they call the whistle and You could have a third man up but these days you have to nominate for the balls so then only you and that the other ruckman can go up but with the third man the ruckman could make out about to hit it down then a mid fielder or a big tall would run in quickly and grab it and just bomb into 50 maybe a goal also miss that rule but the game has become so fast as you can see :) cheers

    Even though there have been bigger comebacks scorewise (Ess v NM 69 points), this one was pretty special (no, I don't follow Lions) because Geelong were hot favourites to win from the beginning as Lions were a bottom team at the time and they STILL GOT RUN DOWN BY THE UNDERDOG IN ABOUT 35 MINUTES!
    On the other hand, both Ess and NM were both top teams at the time. NM got the jump and Ess clawed back 69 PTS in about 75 minutes. Both games were utterly incredible but I still find the Brisbane effort more unbelievable given their respective ladder standings and time constraints.
    I actually remember the Essendon comeback and thought to myself "69 pts is not impossible for this mob" - they were the best team by a mile that year and only North Melbourne could challenge them. Not saying "I knew they would do it" , just never wrote them off. Awesome games.

    Biggest comeback in VFL/AFL history was Essendon V North Melbourne in 2001.

  • @TBoneTony
    @TBoneTony 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    There have been other big comebacks.
    Essendon came back from an over 10 Goal margin during the 2nd Quarter against North Melbourne in a game from 2001.
    Hawthorn came from a similar margin almost at half time against St Kilda in 1999.
    Brisbane back when they were known as the Bears came back from a 45 point margin at 3/4 time against Hawthorn in 1995.
    The granddaddy of all comebacks was back in the 1970 Grand Final when Carlton came from 42 points down against Collingwood to win the premiership in a historic victory.
    If it's a final, it used to be back in the early 1990s, if there is a draw, they replay the match the following week.
    Then it happened in 1990 when Collingwood drew against West Coast in the Qualifying Final so the AFL changed the rules to include the extra time in two 5 minute half's each way.
    The first game when that Extra Time in finals rule was applied was in 1994 when North Melbourne and Hawthorn drew in a Qualifying Final that was the first year the Final 8 MK1 system was ran. (Final 8 MK1 was 1st Vs 8th, 2nd Vs 7th, 3rd Vs 6th and 4th Vs 5th, Final 8 MK2 is when the Finals system was made fairer for teams between 3rd to 6th because of the number of times the teams finished 1st and 2nd defeated the teams finished 7th and 8th rendering the middle teams Qualifying finals as dead rubber games if they didn't mean anything in the outcome of who were eliminated.)
    Then in the 2010 Grand Final Collingwood drew with St Kilda and it was still under the rule if the Grand Final became a draw, the match would be replayed the following week since the Grand Final was originally exempt from the Extra Time rule.
    But in 2015 there was a situation where both Fremantle and West Coast were 1 and 2 on the ladder, both came from Western Australia and there was an argument if they both were in the Grand Final, both became a draw, would it be fair to ask those same fans who travelled all the way from one side of the country down to Melbourne for the same match the following week?
    So the AFL in 2016 changed the situation so the Extra Time rule applied to the AFL Grand Final to avoid that situation.
    In the VFL/AFL history the only draws in Grand Finals were Essendon and Melbourne in 1948 (Before TV), North Melbourne and Collingwood in 1977 and finally Collingwood and St Kilda in 2010.
    You can view footage from both 1977 and 2010 drawn Grand Finals, but in 1948 that was before Television so the only thing you can find is a silent film with music and commentator in the background of that game if the footage survived as there was so much old VFL footage that became lost to time due to deuteriation before the technology became available to preserve that old footage.

    Even though this was the 8th biggest comeback, I think it was the best since they were closing in on quarter time and at the time Brisbane were one of the worst teams in the comp and Geelong were one of the best. Brisbane were massive underdogs that day and somehow they pulled off a miracle on grass.

    If it's a regular season game (home & away game we call it here) and it ends in a draw, there is no extra time, it just stays a draw. In a final, they play extra time if it's a draw at the end of regulation.
    Side note: Again pay some respect to commentator Anthony Hudson, who is a mad Geelong supporter who again sounded exited despite seeing his team lose.

    I remember watching St Kilda make a 45 point comeback, back in the days of black and white TV.
    Victorians hated a draw in a grand final. They are played in late September, which is Spring in Australia. A lot of weddings and major birthday celebrations are planned for the weekend after the grandfinal, and a draw would cause all sorts of complications. Most Victorians are very passionate about their sports, and many, probably including the groom, would rather be watching a footy match, than doing anything else.

    • @pauldobson2529
      @pauldobson2529 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      A good mate of mine, a fanatical Saints fan, had his wedding organised for the Saturday after the 2010 Grand Final. His bride-to-be cried for hours. The groom turned up but his bridal party only fronted for the reception, and a miserable lot they were,after getting pumped in the replay.

    • @pauldobson2529
      @pauldobson2529 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      In country and suburban comps, the grand final is often the second week of September, so there are heaps of weddings the third weekend. There are lots of guys (and girls now) who play football (or netball) all winter,then the cricket season starts the first Saturday in October. Most regional football clubs (and many suburban clubs) are combined football/netball clubs. Same colours, same fixture. Girls have their netball courts 50/100 metres from the football ground. Certainly the case in Warrnambool (south-west coast 260km SW of Melbourne). In NSW and Queensland, rugby league instead of Aussie Rules.
