Ngl, obviously going out for lunch with your friends is totally normal when you’re married without your partner. You certainly don’t need to tell your partner beforehand or ask for permission. But it’s pretty weird that for 39 years straight, neither your husband or your friend ever felt like mentioning they annually have lunch together.

It's the fact that after 40 years of marriage, Richard had never let it slip to Emily, meaning that he actively hid it from her because he knew how it would seem. That's deceitful. And secondly, as the previous commenter noted, she was literally the ex who his mother wanted him to marry!

@@RilianSharp yeah but I think through out the entire series, Richard’s ex was bought up but Emily wasnt aware of the extent Babs (Richard’s mother) went through to stop the wedding. She new from the beginning Babs preferred the ex just not enough to sabotage the wedding.
