    If Eddie put any effort comparable to his buildup to the 500kg deadlift into his axle OHP, I have a feeling he would have set a record that would have been untouched forever, or at the very least would have remained for a long time. When he broke that world record he used 0 leg drive, and not a single part of it was slow. I truly think he could have done 235kg

    • @MellonVegan
      @MellonVegan 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Maybe a healthy Eddie but he couldn't use leg drive bc of his bad knees. Like many heavyweight strongmen.

    • @StrengthUniverse
      @StrengthUniverse  2 ปีที่แล้ว +41

      I'm not sure 235 is on the card any time in the next decade but I think he may of had the potential to get 220kg. The issue with the axle isn't so much the press from the shoulders, it's getting it into position

      Eddie looked great on his 216kg axle press, but he actually really struggled on his 200kg attempt that day. I agree he could’ve set something higher. But then again Zydrunas Savickas set the previous record in 2010 and didn’t peak till 2015-2016. I think Big Z could’ve set a bigger record than Eddie could if they both prepped for it

    • @meginna8354

    Great video. Very thorough.
    Your analysis shows what I was expecting. At their bests, Eddie was arguably statically stronger, but Thor is the arguably the better or ‘stronger’ strongman when dynamic events are added. I think Eddie’s career was purposely short lived relatively speaking because he put everything on the line to be the best he could. He didn’t look that healthy towards the end of his run. Your thumbnail for this vid pretty much says it all!

    It's hard to compare, the reason Eddie always beat Hafthor in static events is because that's what he focussed on, which is why he has so many fewer event wins. Hafthor didn't focus on becoming an absolute giant until the end of his career, while Eddie always did, so I don't think he was capable of improving similarly to how Hafthor did. This means that comparing them becomes exceedingly hard since Eddie was basically always in the version of his physique that Hafthor was by the end. And if we compare for instance Hafthors elephant bar deadlift his max in competition also beats Eddies I believe.
    Also can't really compare years in the field since as I remember it Hafthor started earlier, that means that his extra years are mostly during his "not at his peak yet" years. Just because Eddie wasn't competing at that time doesn't really indicate that he'd have won anything if he had, Hafthor barely did.

  • @MellonVegan
    @MellonVegan 2 ปีที่แล้ว +23

    Eddie was statically stronger for most of these years but Hafthor was the better strongman. Eddie was certainly more specialised in what he was good at. Hafthor caught up with him in lower body strength later but who knows how much Eddie would have improved. Maybe he wouldn't have improved. Tough to say, really.
    Personally, I tend to look at strength in terms of maximal strength and thus would give Eddie the edge up to a point when talking about the strongest ever. But I would not mention Eddie in a conversation for the greatest strongman ever, unlike Hafthor. Had Hafthor pulled sth like 510 or 515, I maybe would change my mind about the static strength part.

      "but who knows how much Eddie would have improved. Maybe he wouldn't have improved. Tough to say, really."
      Considering Eddie "almost died" due to his weigh increase, it's clear he was at his peak. Thor never went for static strength. He's more clever and went for overall strength, mobility and stamina, which is why he's the superior strongman.
      Just look at what Thor did to Eddie's DL record. He smashed it. He just realized that being that big meant he would lose pace, and stamina.

    • @ytsux9259
      @ytsux9259 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Eddie was stronger at pressing. He could bench 660 lbs, while Thor trained benching for many months for his powerlifting event but could only bench 550. Thor was better at some events though.

    • @dctPL
      @dctPL 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@ytsux9259 Eddie has been practicing benchpressing for years. It's one of his typicall exercises. Hafthor on the other hand didn't really do it cause it's quite useless for strongmen. He only practiced it for a few months and then pretty much stopped. I'm surprised Thor did 550 after such a short period of time.
      Bear in mind that Eddie tried to chase 300+ kg benchpress for months and failed. That alone shows that he was at his peak in this particular exercise. Hafthor on the other hand could have still progressed in it.

    If you're measuring strength with strongman events, then Thor probably edges in front. If you measure with static lifts, then I think Eddie takes the win. If you include the bench press, that would be another lift that Eddie easily wins, albeit Thor probably hasn't practiced this lift very much. I think both athletes could have won many more WSM events if they continued with the sport and I believe that one victory each isn't really indicative of their amazing strength and potential.

    1:35 "But that does raise the question as to what may have happened if Eddie and Hafthor didn't retire".
    Not one bit. Had they continued, Thor would've dominated Eddie even more, in both static lifts and overall strongman competitions. In Eddie's own words; "I almost died", "a puddle of blud", "200 bmp heartrate". The dude nearly died for his 500kg deadlift. Thor smashed it and played some CSGO later on.
    Thor quit before reaching his peak, Eddie pushed himself and never won anything significant without the help of Colin Bryce. WSM2017 was rigged.

    The most awaited comparison! 😉 However, there's no comparison in my humble opinion, Hafthor Bjornsson is the Strongest Man who ever lived. Zydrunus is the Second, Eddie is the Third and Brian is the Fourth. And here's why I'm saying that:
    Brute Strength:
    Deadlift, Squat, Bench and Log:
    Zydrunus: 453, 452, 286, 228 = 1,419
    Brian: 468, 410, 247, 211 = 1,336
    Eddie: 500, 405, 300, 213 = 1,418
    Hafthor: 501, 460, 250, 213 = 1,424
    For Americans:
    Zydrunus: 999, 996, 631, 503 = 3,129
    Brian: 1031, 904, 545, 465 = 2,945
    Eddie: 1102, 893, 661, 470 = 3,126
    Hafthor: 1105, 1014, 551, 470 = 3,140
    Functionally and Dynamically, (as a person who has watched almost every competition since WSM 77) out of the 4 guys, nobody holds a candle to Hafthor. He wins Atlas Stones, Husafel Stone, Kegs, any loading race, any truck/plane pull, power stairs and fingers.
    And a Fantastic job as always Strength Universe! You were unbiased in this video and the results speak for itself. My only two gripes are 1). the Squat. Eddie wins on reps, but for 1 rep max, Hafthor's 460 stands out by quite a margin. and 2). The Track record mentioned 0:25 You used Eddie's UK and Britain's Strongest Man wins but overlooked Hafthor's 10 x times Iceland's Strongest Man titles plus another 12 Icelandic, Nordic and Scandinavian Strongman competition wins.
    Another thing I noticed through my research is that Hafthor has Deadlifted more than 1,000lbs 12 times (13 reps) while Eddie has done 7 times. You can check the video I made (time stamps included for each lift) if you have some free time. 😉

    I think Thor showed us all when he went for the deadlift record, what kind of a static monster he can be if he trains for it. I think for the most part, he had a different strategy than Eddie. He realised by training too much of big, static powerlifting-ish movements, he'd fall too far behind in movement events, which has very often screwed over other big names. Not to mention that Thor was active for quite a few more years, and seemingly intended to continue his strongman career for many years (until the boxing thing was agreed upon), so he had to think a bit differently to Eddie in that regard. Eddie has said that he only ever wanted to win WSM once, then get the hell out of the sport. Which he did. So he was able to chuck on weight and risk his health to a larger degree. So in that sense its to a degree an unfair comparison.
    I think the best overall athlete is Thor, and his titles say he's the best strongman of the two. It would however be really interesting to see what Eddie could've done if he had stayed in the sport for a few more years. Would love to see Eddie and Thor compete against eachother in WSM. In my opinion they're in a different league compared to the currently competing athletes (except Shaw, but he's old, has family and business taking up his mind, not at his peak anymore). I'd love to see more strongman competitions focus on more static events again, but as we've seen with both Thor and Eddie, it gets to a point where they have to carry around so much weight that it's too much of a burden to be worth it. They can't sleep, can barely breathe, has to consume an entire cow after walking 10 meters etc. Alas, maybe the PED's and food science of the future will allow it.

    I believe there is no comparision between those two. Thor is miles ahead of Eddie. Eddie clearly was at his peak, almost dying and looking like a walking heart attack from the steroid abuse. He is the first strongman that i can remember to have palumboism and that's easy to understand when you hear him talking in his old interviews and how much he was willing to risk his life for it. He clearly reach a new level of static strength because he was willing to sacrifice his health and mobility in a way no strongman ever did. He reach 197 kg i believe, so imagine what kind of weight Thor could push if he was willing to bump his static strength like Eddie did, but that would mean he would not win major competitions like did, the type of cometition that puts your name out there to be considered the strongest. That, Eddie never reached, being a solid winner on high level comps. For Thor to even match Eddie's type of strength on the static lifts, puts him even above Eddie, because Eddie can't hold a candle on Thor's dynamic events. So, we're comparing a strongman that was good in a variety of events, almost with no weakness, with pretty good static strength while even increasing that on the end of his career against the guy that abused drugs and pushed his body to the absolute limit to gain weight and as a result lost a lot of mobility and dynamic strength. Seriously, there is no comparision, Eddie reached his peak and almost payed with his life but Thor never did. We never saw Thor's peak, im happy for his family and for his new life style, but we never saw his peak on the sport. When i saw him getting interview by Arnold on 2018 i believe, i saw the biggest human being to ever walk on earth, he made Brian Shaw look small. What would mean for Thor if he kept pushing his body to Eddie's levels? 220kg? 230kg? What about his static strength that already was at Eddie's level and even greater on lifts like the DL? That's what most people need to understand when they think about Eddie's static strength compared to Thor's, Eddie risked it all and was at his absolute limit, Thor wasnt. Eddie pushed his limits so hard, that his body got deformed, meanwhile Thor is looking like a bodybuilder without even training for it.

    My subjective opinion is that Eddie is a loudmouth and his pre-workout is a joke, especially since apparently he put hundreds of hours into developing it 😂 no, no he didn't.

    Thor is overall clearly stronger because he is better at so many strength events . Human body has 600 muscles and using 3 static lifts ( squat , deadlift , overhead/bench ) as measurement of someone strength is stupid .
    Powerstairs requires extreme fuctional strength and I would use them as better measurement of strength than for example bench press .
    Dynamic events , static events , throwing things , pulling things , grip exercises all of those are indicators of persons strength and should all be taken into account when deciding who is overall stronger.
    Thats what makes strongman competitions so great they really show us how strong someone truly is. " He is stronger in static events " is just poor excuse fans throw when fighting each other .

    Eddie was a bit better at static strength (not by a large margin), but being good at static strength exclusively doesn't make you a great strongman. Hafthor was just shy of being as good as Eddie when it comes to static strength but much better at everything else, making him a much better strongman. Eddie's strength was something else, but as a strongman, I have to say he is overrated, thanks to his big mouth.

    I think all things considered Eddie had to kill himself to get that strong. Hafthor is a more natural freak of nature. But nonetheless at each of their peaks they are about equal

    I have been analyzing by my way that both strongmen are the reference point of how far a human being can be, that's to say, if you wonder how strong a human being, Eddie and Thor can answer that doubt. They showed us the limit of how strong is possible to be.
    Excellent video. You have improved a lot your method to analyze these kind of stuff.

    the thing is eddie maxed out his potential and put himself in a very dangrous position bcz of his bodyweight in ratio to his height and frame... hafthor on the other hand had so much more potential left in strongman or tbh we saw his peak in his form of 2018 and this was impressiv but he could have gone strong for the next 5 years easily. But on the other hand its fine bcz also for him its healthy to go down with weight and do stuff like boxing were he also gets paid far better. Both athlets have nothing more to proof in the world of strength.

    It's a pity this is just 'head to head' as Thor's strength in deadlifting and squatting increased dramatically in later years, his 2018 domination and easy 501kg deadlift are proof of that. In deadlift and bag over bar no one could beat him. He was also close to unbeatable in atlas stones.

    Eddie held the deadlift for longer, in competition, broke the previous record by 37 kg and broke the barrier.
    Hafthor's "record" is very uneven in comparison.

      Eddie's best day wouldn't come close to big z or Brian's best days eddie is overrated took him to nearly die to win his wsm and the deadlift as he was super unhealthy the true greats havent had to push to that limit to achieve more and compete for longer

      @@rob2406. i don't have the time or piece of mind, but i have done extensive inquiry and i stand by my syatement. You could go back and look at the old video od his best gym lifts. Actually he has made a few bwtter lifts than the ones in the video, but they are impressive. Especially the deadlift pyramid that is unapproachable

    Eddie retiring after only five years shows that Hafthor was a better strongman in terms of durability. He wasn't taxing his body nearly as much. Plus, in ten years of competitions, Hafthor won more than twice as many titles. The static events favored Eddie slightly, while the dynamic events favored Hafthor dramatically. And, as we learned this year with The Stoltman brothers leaked phone call, WSM places favored athletes in easier or more difficult categories based on who WSM wants to win. Giants Live and WSM are intertwined, and when The Stoltmans agreed to accept a (pitiful) retainer in agreement for competing in Giants Live events, it won them them the right to be placed in easy categories at WSM. Eddie was the fortunate son chosen by the brass and coddled along the way. Hafthor wins all day!
