The the fact that this whole “you can just skip The Great Divide altogether” idea has just kinda passively been floating around the Avatar fan community for years and years is absolutely unacceptable to me.

This video has nothing to do with exposure like that, it doesn't apply to exposure at all, the problem is that this video is a Strawman and Tu Quoque fallacy over skipping The Great Divide because its a trash episode by saying "but its so inspired, look at all the inspiration it has in" which first off is a brainlet take, just because something is inspired by something, no matter how good, does not excuse watching it, if Avatar was a bad show, it doesn't matter how inspired it is, there would be no reason to watch it then, I don't care about the inspiration, that's irrelevant to it being a good show, that's a double standard. This comment specifically is also an irrelevant conclusion fallacy, just because this episode exposed people to the show does not mean that anyone who knows about it and is going to watch the show already should bother even watching this episode.

I rewatch atla (and korra) on an annual basis and never once have I skipped this episode. It honestly has a lot of great moments despite being the weakest in the show. My favorite moment in the episode is where Aang is alone at the top looking out over the two separated tribes/camps and the canyon guide shows up and says to him: "lonely isn't it? being impartial." This scene perfectly sums up his predicament as the avatar and why he was so hesitant to embrace this role in the first place. It is a visual representation of how his position isolates him from other people, which is something that's elaborated on in the next episode (The Storm), but the idea is first introduced in this episode. I think The Great Divide is an example for how well-paced atla really is.

My distaste for The Great Divide comes from the writing aspect and not the animation aspect. Having the two tribes dislike each other over an event that occurred so long before that nobody likely remembers what actually happened was good conflict, but my main complaint was Sokka and Katara turning on each other by siding with the tribe that they each spent the previous night with and learned each side's take on the event instead of meeting with Aang and sharing what they learned about the conflict between the two tribes. I get it, Sokka and Katara are siblings, and siblings will have their disagreements on certain things, but they are also part of Team Avatar and should have tried to stay as neutral as possible despite what they learned about the conflict.
On a side note, based on the tales of the two tribes, I think one of either Jin Wei or Wei Jin was working in tandem with Fire Lord Sozin, because when the actual initial conflict took place kind of lines up with Aang's disappearance, which we would learn about in The Storm just one episode later. Or it could have been just pure coincidence and has nothing to do with Sozin's global conquest.

    • @SirRebrl
      @SirRebrl 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +31

Not just siblings, but kids, and the episode set up that they were already getting on each other's nerves for, in principle, the _same_ things the Gan-Jin and Zhangs ragged on each other for. So their stories inflamed those immediate irritations. No doubt if they'd been older and more mature, they would have responded differently.

It's... just a bad story. Sure, there are moral lessons imparted with this episode. But the writing is clunky and awkward. The few redeeming moments this episode has does not make up for the banality of its storytelling, the cliches piled atop each other, and obvious virtue signaling. What i hate about this episode is not just the "solution," but the fact that GREAT SOLUTION was there all along and no one noticed it.
Like One tribe saying their founder was tripped and robbed while other tribe says their founder simply found the dude passed out and took the sphere to complete the ritual in his stead.
At the time when I first watched it (11-13 years old) I IMEDIATELY thought: "Wow they are both telling the truth, they just do not realize it!"
I thought one founder performed the ritual, but passed out and the other continued it to help, but once he arrived the white clad tribesmen did not believe the guy and punished him for "Theft" sparking the whole conflict, so if Gaang just explained it it would have been great episode, instead of Aang lying.

@@diy_cat9817Idk... I think this is the only episode people skip, and while I've personally watched it both times I've watched the show, I understand why people would skip it, and I will probably start doing it from now on too.
Now-, I understand why you would feel that way, people should just watch the show and form their own opinions, and you should definitely not skip an episode in your first time watching the show, but as someone who didn't watch the show on release, but in order, and also as someone who didnt interact with the online community until after watching the show, I remember clearly that the first time I watched this episode I thought it was THAT bad. Like-, the thing is, this episode isn't even a bad Avatar episode (Like-, yk, the show being so good that this episode stands out as mid), but this is actually a bad episode in general, like-, actually awful. I wouldn't say that it was because the showrunners were lazy (definitely not, as seen in this video, which shows how much effort they put into the animation and that kind of stuff), I also don't find it bad for being filler (I'm a person who actually likes filler episodes for what they might do or just for the fun of it), but this episode is like-, straight up bad. Every character acts like there was a gas leak (Especially Katara), the problem of the episode and its resolution were really culturally insensitive and the message it gives comes from a place of absolutely missing the point they might have been trying to make. It's a really, like-, REALLY bad episode. So even tho I understand why you would feel upset about people skipping an episode without even trying to watch it, calling them "Uncultured" is kinda-, I think you're ignoring the fact that this episode is actually terrible and actively damages the show and the message it tries to convey, it is absolutely worth skipping and we shouldn't shame on people for deciding not to engage in an universally hated episode that retroactively tarnishes this masterpiece of a show

That's true. About that... many people didn't like the ending when Aang lies about the story of the two guys in order to lead the tribes to make peace. However, I find this actually very practical, since in real life, both the lack or the excess of historical memory can lead you to war; just take a look at the conflict in middle east, where history backs all sides with a lot of reasons to hate and kill each other. If you are too anchored in your history and traditions, you might never be able to make the necessary changes to give your people a good future. That's just my opinion.

You mention not finding any instance of anyone on the anime team mentioning Imaishi by name. I did a little research into this a couple years ago because I also thought the Imiashi influence was so clear. In the Avatar Extras event on Nickelodeon, they showed a bunch of extra facts and comments by Avatar writers while re-airing all the episodes. During the great divide, they say this: "The Zhang flashback was designed and animated to pay homage to Japanese animator Hiroyuki Imaishi's style." and "Hiroyuki Imashi's work can be seen on the animated TV series called 'Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi.'"
Interesting that they reference Abenobashi and not Dead Leaves when Dead Leaves is clearly the influence for the scene, not Abenobashi. I think they chose to reference that show instead because Dead Leaves has a lot of adult content they wouldn't want to recommend on Nickelodeon. Interestingly, Abenobashi also has a good bit of adult content. I guess it's more palatable because the main characters are children.
Also, thanks for highlighting my comment earlier! I was the person who mentioned that the great divide has an imaishi inspired scene in the overanalyzing avatar video.

it isnt "skip it" because of what it does right, but because of what it gets wrong. No one is denying there are good elements in it, but the bad outweighs the good, especially with the end of the episode undermining the general vibe of the show. Skip on rewatches is the actual sentiment, as you wont know how "bad" it is until youve "suffered" through it at least once.
All the anime influences are great, but is it really enough to prove the "dont skip it" point? All the points made are merits requiring research, and that isnt going to have any impact on most viewers. Sure, some might appreciate the anime references unique to the episode, but when it comes to recommendations, that is something that would come from someone personally related, in which case, they likely know if that fact would peak interests or not. On the internet, you dont get personalized recommendations, so they remain more general overall. For most people, the animation change might be interesting, but without background knowledge in anime, they wouldnt care what inspired it. There is also the case to be made that you still are not missing out on many of the references, since they show up in other forms elsewhere in the show.
There is value in the great divide, but that value is too limited to be part of general recommendations. Skip it on rewatches, experience it only that first time.

I know that anime/manga is often seen as a rival or "superior" to American super hero comics, but I'd love to see a video on all the ways these two mediums have influenced each other. From anime studios working on Batman The Animated Series, to Spider-Man inspiring Super Sentai which in turn inspired characters like Blue Beetle. There's an incredibly rich co-mingling of ideas that I'd love to see someone tackle not from a place of "mine is better than yours" but rather the same sort of sincere admiration of both that you've shown here.

18:50 "inspired by japanese swordsmen" seems a bit vague of a statement cobsidering the character is very obviously based on Toshiro Mifune's character "Sanjuro" from the 1961 movie Yojimbo directed by Akira Kurosawa. I always thought the Momo's appearance in the hallucunation was a Yojimbo as his look and mannerisms are spot on for Mifune's character

It's a funny concept that plays with the quest story format similar to how Pokemon has, rather than lotr. It's symptomatic of being early in the series, but I don't see that as a problem at all. Nothing wrong with a silly episode where aang wants a custard tart

Cool animation is no excuse for bad writing. This avatar. While I appreciate cool styles it's not worth the pointless storybeats and childlike divisions. This is one of the episodes that got away with it because it is a kids show. Everyone is insufferable, and though it may provide a few lore threads haphazardly thrown in to make is almost seem like we're watching the same show as before, you can very neatly take this out of the show as a whole and only miss maybe a minute of interesting animation. It's not the worst episode of Avatar, but it's definitely one of the few episodes I would prefer to skip.

Great video as usual with you Kross. Thank you for the great content!
While a side thought that you had here - I completely agree that the live action Avatar should have just been a new story within the Avatar universe. The world building is vast here and could have been anything but instead they choose to try recreating a story what is effectively about as perfect as you can get. So far from the trailer I've seen it doesn't look bad.. but it really can't be better than the original series. To top it off, all this money and effort was spent when we could have been seeing a fresh story. A shame (Inevitably I'll still watch it, but still).
On a tangent if you happen to read this - I would love to hear your thoughts on some Hazbin Hotel / Helluva Boss. (Beyond that first video you did)

ATLA was animated by artists in Korea. Brian talks about his time overseeing animation there.
Celebration of the Korean artists that did the work makes more sense than the omage to Japanese artists that white american creators enjoyed.
Props to the artists use of the 4 different styles representing the OG ATLA, Jon Wei flashback, Wei Jun flashback and Aang's chilidish lie and the teams that brought it together.

The great divide is the best episode of the first season.
spoiler warning for the episode in question
The two tribes are an intelligent metaphor for our society. They both justify irresponsible behaivior by saying that if they dont bring food, the others will do it anyway. That kind of behavior can be observed in almost any political conflict. Any single individual or country or company cant make a difference anyways so they dont even have to try.
Finding someone to blame for your problems is easy. Finding a soulution is hard.
Thats a powerfull message for a cartoon.
The way Aang convinces them to stop fighting and start working on a better future togethter by strait up lying to them is genius.
A conflict solved without violence. Thats something you dont come across as much as you should. Both on tv and in real live.

  • @tofu_golem
    @tofu_golem 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I think this episode gets more flak than it deserves.
If you are watching this with a child, especially do not skip this episode.
First, the two tribes are coded as Chinese wealthy people and Chinese poor people. This gives you an opportunity to talk to the child about why social stratification is bad in preparation for deeper conversations about that topic once the characters get to Ba Sing Se.
Second, you get an opportunity to talk to the child about how different cultures have different views of the same events in the past because over time, one of both of them can twist the facts to make themselves look better when they teach history to their children.
Lastly, the episode ends on a great moral question for kids: was Aang right to lie? As a consequentialist, I would say Aang was wrong. Lies of this kind have a nasty habit of being exposed later, and if this lie gets exposed, the feud will come back stronger than ever. But really, it would probably be best not to guide the conclusions of the child, and allow them to explore the topic on their own and come to their own conclusions.

I got into Avatar somewhat late. I kept hearing about this anime-like cartoon on Nickelodeon, but I never checked it out because I was mostly out of TV in general, shifting a LOT of my focus to pirated subbed anime instead. But I think a friend I knew on AOL Instant Messenger informed me that the series was about to begin re-airing from episode 1, so that was as good a time as any to get into it (as I recall, this was sometime before Book 3 began airing). That said, I generally avoided the online discourse surrounding the show, so I was completely unaware that The Great Divide was so hated (I think I first became aware of that a couple years later, while reading around TVTropes). When I initially watched it....... yeah, it was pretty fillery, but the stylized flashbacks were pretty funny (that along with a couple other gems, like Sokka so blatantly saying that he just hung around for the food). I think this video put it nicely: it was just a fun little breather episode. Hardly anything I'd consider to be an absolute trash-tier abomination that's worth skipping over (and really, I'd say "filler episodes" only truly get to be unbearable when you've got F all happening for several, and I mean SEVERAL, episodes in a row, like with Pokemon or anime-original episodes of Detective Conan...... Avatar generally paced its plot out quite well, so having one episode like this once in a while could hardly be an issue).

Why is anyone skipping episodes at all!? They're only 20 minutes long, and there aren't many per season to begin with! Like, I binged the whole first season in a single weekend. Feeling decadent for doing so, I decided to make myself wait twenty days before watching more and limit myself to one episode per day afterwards. Which I did. And it still only took about two months to finish the series and felt like it was over too soon.

The problem with The Great Divide is that it doesn't contribute anything to the plot nor character development, nobody learns anything, if anything it actually hurts everyone's character, Sokka and Katara act completely out of character out of nowhere throughout the episode and then it gets dropped by the end of the episode, and Aang doesn't actually resolve a conflict, he just straight up lies to resolve the conflict suggesting sometimes the quickest resolution to a problem is to simply lie and ignore the consequences. All these facts combined is why you should skip The Great Divide. It serves no purpose, its pacing is absolute trash, it contributes nothing to the show, and its a filler episode that harms every single character, it doesn't matter what inspirations it has in it, or that it is a lighthearted episode in preparation for heavier ones after already heavy ones, if you're watching the show, that pacing has never been a problem, I don't get why you think any of this matters to a viewer of the show. Just because you have an episode full of inspiration is irrelevant to the audience, that's not why we watch something and it should not be an excuse for a crap story, (imagine if Avatar had all these inspirations and its narrative was also a bad show, it wouldn't matter what inspirations it have, there's be no reason to watch it then, that's a double standard) I would even say The Great Divide also goes too far being incredibly bland by wearing its inspiration on its sleeve instead of being subtle and creative about making references because it only further detracts from the immersion of the show. I'm not watching Avatar because I care about its inspirations, that's a cool detail in a fact book, but as an audience, I care about engaging and enjoying the show, you could just as well have no inspiration and so long as I can enjoy and be well engaged with the story I would not care. Why do people keep injecting the idea that "we need to care about the inspiration" as if that crap matters to the audience? I can smell the animation major through the screen.
