For the brim of your cabled hat - after you knit it to the length you want it to be to fold it, you can do one "short row" stitch (wrap and turn or German Short Row) at the beginning of round so that you'll start knitting the opposite way. Then you just knit it in pattern as the right side for the rest of the hat and resolve the short row stitch when you get back to the beginning of round. That way when it folds up, the right sides of both the brim and the head of the hat are showing. I hope that makes sense. The Oslo hat by PetiteKnit does this, and Knit California has a video that might help explain it better than I am.
Love seeing the start of your Selbu socks in Rambler!! These will be awesome and I think you'll really love the woolly wool. The blend of breeds holds up great in socks!
I struggled with the musselburgh hat too (sizing-wise) and realized the issue I was having was more about gauge than yarn. The pattern has you measure the gauge when you are still at a small circumference, when many people (myself included) knit much tighter than they do for the rest of the hat. Since the gauge is measured at a place that isn't consistent with the majority of the hat, it comes out bigger than intended due to having more stitches than you need for your desired size. I ended up measuring the main stockinette portion of my "failed" musselburgh as a more accurate gauge swatch and it made ALL the difference. Of course, for those who don't want to knit an entire hat as a gauge swatch, you can also measure at that later point, then frog and re-start if necessary.
I agree measure your post blocking gauge to see how it compares to your initial gauge. I’ve made this pattern multiple times- all sizes. I use super wash sock yarn. When measuring the gauge initially, I measure all 4 quadrants and I do it multiple times during the increase rounds. Then I basically take the average. Also when blocking do not stretch the hat. Just pat it out. My hats relax but don’t really grow. Good luck. The Musselburgh is my all time favorite hat pattern for all sizes.
Im currently knitting a musselburgh hat which is my 6th. One got huge and I had stupidly used alpaca which stretched SO much. The others I had no fit issues with. I also was looking through my stash earlier today to pick out yarn for a shift. I’ve had that pattern for ages and never knit it. So funny you talked about both patterns I’m working on. I also have a Easy V sweater and a few pairs of socks going
I am going to be doing the stripe hype next spring and will use the two by two. I think it would compliment the pattern better mimicking the stripes. I love the twisted rib but prefer it on patterns that need a pop of fine detail so that it really showcases well.
As I have just finished my autumnal stripe hype I know the struggle of the twisted rib. It was very worth it and it looks great, but if I knit another stripe hype I would go with a 2x2 or 2x1 ribbing.
Its springtime here in NZ so weather is getting warmer. I am currently working on second musselburgh hat and socks for my daughter who is about to experience her first Colorado winter. I love seeing your projects and gives me lots of inspiration for knits for my girl. Love your striped jumper and thinking about knitting the zipper sweater for hubby. Looking forward to next video, sounds exciting.
It is always so cool to remember how seasons are flipped in different parts of the world! So glad I’m helping with inspiration and how lovely you are knitting for them 💞
I just finished my zipper sweater. I had to steam block the facing before sewing, but once the facing was in the zipper was very easy to sew. It's a little tricky at the bottom. I hand sewed mine, and wet blocked it after. Good luck!
Thank you for your podcast today Jacque - it was wonderful as always! While watching I was motivated to knit on my Musselburgh hat as it's been neglected lately. I agree with another comment here about gauge swatching at the later point in the hat. For my first hat I knew (based on other hats that I've made for myself) that I'd need AT LEAST 100 stitches, so I increased out to 100 stitches before I did my gauge swatch, then I knew where to go from there. I love, love your Stripe Hype and I do like all the suggestions about the ribbing. My choice would be a 2x2 but that's just my favourite. I am "dying" to see the new yarn that you plan to showcase next podcast, for the Shift Cowl. Such fun! I live on the west coast of Canada and this past weekend we had an "atmospheric river" with a record rainfall (non stop) in 72 hours. Houses were destroyed by water, mudslides and landslides. A few people lost their lives - it was terrible. Now today we are relatively warm 8C/48F. Happy knitting to you! 😊
Oh wow! I hope you and yours are safe, so sorry to hear about the atmospheric river… that is so tragic. So glad you have knitting to bring you joy. I also love the 2x2 for the stripe hype and can’t wait to show you my yarn for the shift cowl 😊
Those fall colors look amazing on you! For super-wash yarn, I've put my finished article in the dryer for short amounts of time (like 5-10 minute increments) to shrink it after wet blocking. I'm a new knitter, but a very experienced knitter suggested it would work--and it did! Wild Barn Yarn rocks! I've been to the farm in Dennison, MN. It's fun to see the yarn from each sheep!
Your hat is beautiful. I live in Montana (6 miles from Canada) and I have been wearing sweaters all month so far here. I do also work nights so I am working when it is chillier out. Weather can be so different depending on where exactly people live. I have been eyeing that Gilmore Girls knitting book since I saw it first pop up on Amazon. I definitely want to try a bunch of the patterns as I love GG
Love seeing the Fall Feels KAL makes, thanks for sharing those. I find colorwork socks are their own gauge swatch. The swatch needs to be knit in the round right so why do it double if unnecessary. I will suggest try on as you go. Some colorwork socks I’ve been able to stay at the 64 st count but some I’ve needed to go up to the next size to get it over the heel/ankle area, esp with nsw because it doesn’t have as much stretch as sw. Can’t forget to say both of the sweaters you’re making are gorgeous!
I'm so glad you enjoyed me sharing the makers for fall feels, I will for sure keep doing that for the rest of the KAL! GREAT feedback on the socks, I will totally try on as I go, just incase they are too tight! Appreciate your compliments too of course, happy knitting Galeann!
It is still hot and dry in Tennessee and I am so over it. Summer is that rude guest that just won't leave lol. I love your sweater WIPs and that colorway on your Musselburgh is perfection!
Hi Jacque, I'm really enjoying your podcast! I'm thinking about making the Musselburgh hat-can I find the pattern on Ravelry? The temps in CT were in the high 80s this past Monday and Tuesday, but it's down to 75 today! That's another reason I haven't started any fall knits yet.
Fabulous inspiration Jacque! Your Stripe Hipe sweater is in the perfect colours for you. I personally think the two by two ribbing would match the sweater the best, maybe go down a needle size from what it calls for because of your “loose” knitting. Regarding the Weekend hat, maybe the designer has you do a German short row, this would switch the rib sides. The Olso hat by Petite Knit has this technique in the pattern. Happy Knitting and I am intrigued about the collaboration you are doing with the Mill 😊

I am making the stripe hype and using regular one by one ribbing, I like the look of 1x1 and substitute it a lot in my garment making
It looks great with 1x1!
I am going to be doing the stripe hype next spring and will use the two by two. I think it would compliment the pattern better mimicking the stripes. I love the twisted rib but prefer it on patterns that need a pop of fine detail so that it really showcases well.

Twisted rib 100% 😊
Thanks!
Love the twisted rib cause my knit stitches are wonky when I do just rib. So it works for me
