How to Make a Grinding Wheel for the Lathe

  • Homemade grinding wheel for the lathe so that I can sharpen all my tools, such as woodturning chisels and other kinds of chisels.
Some users have asked me if it's dangerous to press the tools against the wheel while it's turning due to the wheel's canal. After lots of testing I haven't had any problems, as long as the edge of the tool is above the wheel's axis and you push gently. At any rate, it would be a good idea to install a switch so that you can reverse the lathe's motion when necessary.

I made one a few days ago and attached it in place of my meduim grit wheel i'd been using for sharpening my lathe tools. I put 320 grit sandpaper on it and what a difference! It's so nice to work with sharp smooth tools for once and it's so much quicker and so easy to just give it a touch up. Tyvm!

I have been watching numerous videos on knife sharpening systems and have taken the features that I like from many to design my own using with both an abrasive wheel and a polishing wheel (MDF wheel with polishing rogue). My plan calls for the abrasive wheel to spin at about half the speed of the polishing wheel. I hadn't quite figured out how I was going to attach the sanding cloth to my grinding wheel (plywood). Your technique is ingenious! Thanks for the great video.

@@Paoson_Woodworking I tried to use this method to make a similar wheel for my bench grinder but found it problematic. When I could get the sand paper to tighten with out the slotted bolt cutting or breaking the fabric it was still too loose and would pull away under the centrifugal force. I tried several times with different paper but it always went slack then broke free and whipped me pretty badly.

Wonderful ! - well thought out design to handle a rather routine task. I have just one observation to make : with the wheel spinning clockwise and the point of the chisel facing upward, there is a possibility, however small, that the leading edge of the chisel can catch the groove on the periphery of the wheel and lead to a catastrophic event. It would be safer to have the wheel spin anticlockwise, and avoid this.

Great video! Question would it be possible for you to discuss how you make your table saw height adjustments. Reason, it appears in previous videos that the height adjustment involves you reaching inside and pushing the saw up and down I have always wondered how you have you have managed to set the saw blade height accurately while reaching inside the table saw housing. Possibly a video on advanced basics using your machines. Thank you for sharing your knowledge advice and your meticulous attention to detail and an advanced apology for the silly questions of a simple minded individual.

I have some constructive criticism if you'd like.
The video production as well as voice over your work was great. I love it and I definitely want to watch your other videos where you made this stuff.
My criticism is of this wheel speed, the wheel and mechanism to attach the sandpaper is so awesome I feel dumb for not thinking of it. That's how you know you have it right and simple enough, when people feel dumb for not doing it first.
But it's spinning way too fast. You are going to lose tempering in the steel. If you can spin that wheel at say 60-100rpm while dripping water on it you'd have a tormek for great price.

  • @PunkR0ckz09

Hey Paoson, really nice video !
Instead of plastic covers, why don't you just glue up some plywood discs on both sides of the grinding wheel, so it covers the heads of the screws and on the other side, you could install threaded inserts so it would eliminate both nuts? Would look better in my opinion as well and be less dangerous since you could shape it easily (taper edge) :)
