      If you want to use this thing as a storyteller hook. hide an npc within the demi-plane of one of these creatures that the party has to get into. It's one of the hardest to find hiding spots in all of the planes. perhaps they have information about a God. Perhaps they know the secrets to an ancient Relic that the party needs in some fashion. Or perhaps needs to be brought back to the material world to Finish or do some task.
      Having to figure out how to incapacitate the party and get it swallowed could take some party creativity all on it's own even assuming they can be sure they have the right one.

      The don jon is the highest room in the tallest tower of a castle. It is both the safest room in the castle, and the most difficult room from which to escape. As such, it might be occupied by a king, or a hostage. Jim's guess was close; don jon is the predecessor to the word "dungeon".

    In some settings I like the concept of creatures that are so powerful they simply *are*. They don't have creation stories, you're never going to get rid of all of them, they exist by merit of the fact that they exist. Something like the Astral Dreadnought fills that role perfectly and can be used to lend gravity to so many places and concepts.

    I like the idea that the Astral Dreadnought is so big that in the void of the Astral Plane it has a noticable gravitational pull. Not enough to actually move players a meaningful amount, but enough to convey the scope of what they are dealing with and, for flavor, contribute to why it's AC is so high because of how disorienting it is.

    • @TERMINATOR3900
      @TERMINATOR3900 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wouldn't that cause the AC to go down because your attacks are being pulled towards the creature so it's easier to hit?

    • @cougar71624
      @cougar71624 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Terminator The small amount of pull towards a creature of this size is not going to make it any easier to hit, however it would make striking with a high amount of precision very difficult. Anything of this size is not missed in the traditional sense of not hitting; a miss is, in my opinion, a failure to get through the chitin/scales/hide of the creature enough to deal damage. There is no way a high level adventurer completely misses something literally equivalent to the broad side of a barn.

    The Astral Dreadnought has the titan tag. The only other four creatures with this tag are the Empyrean, the Kraken and the Tarrasque from the Monster Manuel and the Atropel from the Tomb of Annihilation. What I was wondering was what these five monsters have in common besides all being Huge or bigger and all having Legendary Actions, because there are alot of other monsters that would fit these criterias but they don't have the titan tag. Is it maybe that they have a game mechanic or magic effect that only affects them like for shapechangers or do all of these five have a connection with eachother lore- and storywise like yugoloths and yuan-ti? As far as I searched I haven't found an answer for this. Could someone explain the titan tag on these five monsters to me?

    We had the party spellcasters go on a rescue mission for one that was swallowed. They had to hunt the thing down by looking for one covered in color from a spray spell. When it came charging, they each grabbed a party member and dimension doored into the mouth so they’d be swallowed. Wasn’t fun but before we left, we created a Warlock who’s patron was an Astral dragon. Fun times.

      Good thing you didn't apply the bag of holding having no oxygen in it to him, or he would have suffocated and died in a few minutes inside it. That would've made things a bit awkward when he died, and they get his body out, then he needs to make a new character.

    Donjon is a name that refers to the highest usable/livable room of a castle. Normally in a tower. Historically used for many things one of them being to keep certain prisoners there because by nature of its location being the highest room, it was the hardest room to rescue someone from and the hardest to escape from because you have the rest of the castle to go through. But because so many lords started to use the donjon for a prison, the term started to get associated with prisons, later when castles got larger underground structures, those because the prisons and the word evolved into dungeon. The current literal translation of donjon from french to English is "keep", as in the main building of a castle.

    So I feel that the bag of holding astral tear rule works like this: Any perminant portal to another realm has to creat and condense and wormhole connecting two existing locations. Any enchantment that does this is a arcane geometric calculation that spans time and space. Most simple and stable are portals that link two immobile locations, such as a gate or demiplane. Any mobile portal is a running calculation that has a chance of failure, but tends to be maintained by the enchantment. If two running calculations interact, they immediately destroy one another and tear a hole in rhe fabric of their tunnels, shunting any neaby matter into the astral plane before the weave heals itself.

    official description for bag of holding and extradimentional space
    Placing a bag of holding inside an extradimensional space created by a Handy Haversack, Portable Hole, or similar item instantly destroys both items and opens a gate to the Astral Plane. The gate originates where the one item was placed inside the other. Any creature within 10 feet of the gate is sucked through it to a random location on the Astral Plane. The gate then closes. The gate is one-way only and can't be reopened.

    • @EvelynNdenial
      @EvelynNdenial 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      i would reason it that anything that is an extrusion of regular space will conflict with bags of holding. so anything that has to do with being on a whole other demi/plane wont trigger it. so not banishment, plane shift, demiplane, or secret chest but rope trick and magnificent mansion would.

    • @Draeckon
      @Draeckon 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think he's just posting this to inform Jim and Pruitt. Also, I'd say combining these items like this this would work because technically, the Donjon space isn't _actually_ on the Astral Plane, so you could use it to escape the Astral Dreadnought's gullet - you just can't destroy it with it. The Dreadnought's not actually occupying that pocket dimension, and it specifically states it cannot be harmed from within it. But magic like Plane Shift lets you get out - and while doing so in a somewhat expensive roundabout way, this is planar shifting magic _of a sort_ .
      So yeah, that's one way out. Problem is, you're now ejecting yourself into a random part of the Astral Plane. Possibly alone. And if you weren't confused and lost before, you _definitely_ are now!

    • @docnevyn5814

    • @solarcat_
      @solarcat_ 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      pvtblue Rope Trick and Magnificent Mansion aren't "items", so RAW they shouldn't trigger the gate. It's just combining the Bag with another similar item that contains an extradimensional space.

    • @Rook_Gaming_Original
      @Rook_Gaming_Original 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The rule is clearly meant to stop players from sticking items inside of items for infinite storage, That's why it's says "or similiar item" It's meant for items not spells as all the spells that create the extradimensional space (the ones I've seen) have a time limit and eject everything out in the end. So it's not the same thing, it takes an item inside an item to trigger the gate.

    The wording I see for bags of holding in 5E is "Placing a bag of holding inside an extra dimensional space created by a Heward's handy haversack, portable hole, or similar item instantly destroys both items..." So while the effect is definitely as expected, it is limited to containers that hold unusually large amounts of stuff being placed inside each other. Also, it actually says that it opens a gate to the Astral Plane which sucks in any creature within 10 feet of it. So even if you wanted to allow it to happen, any players too close to the bad guy when he is banished would get sucked through as well, "to a random location on the Astral Plane".

    My thought on incorporating an Astral Dreadnaught into an adventure would be to have a major location like a temple or the entrance to a dungeon inside one of these things. So they either have to kill it, or all manage to get swallowed depending on the parties skill set. Maybe even have "bad guy cult" protecting it and they have to beat them all or volunteer to be fed to it or something.

Therizdun is this ancient mega god that wants to end all of existence and hes patient and smart enough to know that mortals and gods are in the long run of very little consequence to his plans he'll get there in the end theres no stopping him. so why not lend his power to some mortal? he doesnt care about whether the world is filled with the living or the undead its all still existence to him. so why not help that warlock or make sure a group of plucky adventurers finds the item they need to save their world from demons or lichs. by doing so he makes sure that particular circle of reality will close that much sooner by how much? who knows centuries decades years hours seconds. either way he winds after all its so much harder to manipulate the undead or some one track mind demon into hasting the universes destruction.

In my mind (and in my game world, though I haven't brought it into play yet), the Astral Plane is sort of a combination of the "spirit world" and just space. If my fantasy party ever gets to epic level, I want to have a spaceship appear in their world from out of the Astral plane; in the world that it originates from they've used science to be able to travel the Astral plane (think Star Wars hyperspace, Star Trek warp, that kind of thing), and now you've got a fantasy world that finds out there are other planets out there that exist in their same plane of existence and are far more technologically advanced (though they don't use magic in the same way, but harness some of magic's same effects through scientific means).
