The Seven-Year Cycles of Child Development

  • Rudolf Steiner, the founder of Waldorf education, observed that children experience major developmental milestones every seven years, and that this pattern continues throughout human life, even into adulthood!
In this week's Sunday with Sarah, I explain this theory in brief, and describe how Waldorf education attempts to meet the child during each seven-year phase of development.
After watching the video, maybe you'll even recognize milestones in your life that occurred every seven years!
Don't forget to subscribe to my channel, and click the bell icon to be notified every time I post a new video.
Thanks for watching and see you next Sunday!

Hi Sarah, I love this video! I am a Muslim and I think you may be very surprised to find out that this concept is part of our tradition in education for children. There is a famous saying attributed to Ali ibn Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with him, that forms the foundation for the suggested approach, which says:
“Play with them for the first seven years of their life; then teach them for the next seven years; then advise them for the next seven years and after that.”

Wow! I really resonated with this. At 14 I decided to switch schools (from private to public) I had a strong urge to completely change things up. At 21 I started "soul searching" and my growth, self knowledge and confidence skyrocketed (unprecedented), and at 28 I yet again started feeling that itch/urge for growth/learning/change. At 31 now I'm excited for what 35 might bring :) Thanks Sarah ♡

This was awesome! Unfortunately, my son was not greeted in a warm good, beautiful way at the Waldorf school when he arrived at age 2 and was only given 3 weeks there, they kept saying he was "stressed"... 6 years later he speaks two languages and has always been at the top of his class. Anywho, I was told to not speak up about the teachers behaviour towards my son that I saw with my own eyes. Now that thats behind me , I am grateful to know this deep insight on the developmental stages

You talked about goodness, beauty, and truth. This reminds me of classical education. Could you make a video on the similarities and differences of Waldorf and classical education?

I've seen cycles in my life and those of my chldren that seem to be 10 years. 30 is our adult milestone, with great enhancement of confidence and self control.

Love it! Although I probably cldnt wait that long to introduce some preschool or learning to read by 6 ish- just b/c I like that kind of stuff it’s fun for me and my kids. But I love letting them still PLAY & IMAGINE-I completely agree with this. Love hearing about the older ages♥️

Whilst I appreciate the verbal content, having pictorials or other imagery in your video would help maintain viewer engagement and connection to the content (maybe footage of whatever you're talking about or drawings of timelines?, other than just you talking). Thanks, and all the best with the future video shares. We need this.

How are these 7 year cycles affected by abuse and neglect? What if the first 7 years of the child's life are filled with not good, but pain and suffering? How is this remedied later? Even if beauty and knowledge is experienced? (During more pain and suffering)

This really resonates with me. I came across the information regarding the 9 year change a few months back and it really helped me to understand what was happening with my 9 year old. I also have an almost 7 year old and he literally lost his first tooth about 3 months ago and I could just see the changes within him. We are homeschooling and I would like to know if you would be so gracious as to give tips as to how I could implement Waldorf teachings in our homeschooling. I recently ordered a few items from your store, some art supplies, marbles all sorts of beautiful things and the boys are absolutely loving them. Also, I turned 42 and that’s another 7 year and I am surely feeling a shift in my being 🙋🏾Sweet blessings to you Sarah 😉💕

suha mom of 5 yes and thank you. I have talked to her a couple of times as well as follow her channel. I have picked up a few ideas. But I can’t get the curriculum, Live Education is just too expensive 🤦🏾‍♀️ and they don’t sale it in parts and also it’s difficult to get resale because they make folks sign a no resale clause. So I need ways without a curriculum.

I love all of your videos :) i am so confused though becuase my son having mild autism... I don't know whether to put him in preschool or wait until he is 7... Since he has speech delay they recommend I put him in preschool. Of course Waldorf is my first choice and I have my home set up with all wooden toys and no TV but untik my husband finishes his bachelor's Waldorf is not something we can afford . Of course we will once we have the funds. What should I do until then ? He graduates next year ...Wait till he is 7 and have him in Waldorf or allow him to go now since he has some delays ? He is 3 now

Hi. I would suggest looking for a mommy and me (caregiver-child) Waldorf class to get involved with at this age. Many of these style classes are offered by Waldorf schools and only meet once a week with the caregiver and run seasonally (We have attended great mommy and me classes through all seasons.) Also look for Waldorf based homeschooling groups in your area (that would be a great free resource.) We have done both (I have kids 3 years ,2 years ,and 6 months.) My best resources for bringing Waldorf home (aside from Bella Luna Toys and attending a Waldorf school with my kids) have been the song books from Bella Luna Toys and the books Seven Times the Sun and Heaven on Earth. Good things to do in the day: start with a simple circle time, eat, go outside on a nature walk, sing your transitions, bake and cook with your son, tell him stories slowly, have a daily, weekly, monthly, seasonal rhythm (Gerda Muller's season board books are a great tool for bringing the seasons inside and fostering discussion.) Possibly find someone to do eurythmy lessons with your son. I'd wait and give him some time in your home environment. Just wanted to give some help. You will know what is best for your son.

My youngest son is autistic and gets speech therapy at home 1x a week. I homeschool my 4 children. So I'd recommend searching for a speech therapist to come to your house.

Some states have an early intervention program available for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers that is free. In Tennessee, the therapist will come to your home and provide speech therapy (they also educate you in how to facilitate speech with your child's specific needs in mind) at no cost. You can Google your state and early childhood speech intervention to find a phone number to call and ask questions. They can set you up for an evaluation and make recommendations, if you disagree you can just decline further services.
Personally I'd make sure he was getting therapy if you are going to keep him at home and create a curriculum for him. Waldorf education doesn't focus in the traditional reading and writing, but at this age oral skills are enhanced, so lots of parent interaction and attention to speech would help. Nothing wrong with some flash cards with pictures on them or using his toys as your props for "speech lessons".
      Good luck!

Play with him, it's always a good idea 😊 It opens communication and you can see what he already knows and what he's interested in. It's a good time for cards and board games, more complicated puzzles as well as using the old puzzles for a new challenge - have the pieces in one room and the picture in another. He should run to the pieces and back to the other room to put the puzzle next to the picture. It combines movement that is very much needed at this stage.

I appreciate the facts, didn't agree with your opinions. I don't think we should brain wash our child(ren) to believe falsities to "protect" them. Honesty and answers to everything is what I agree with.

There is an art in infusing honesty within the imagination. This is built upon in later years. For example, the "flower fairies" and the "work" of the "root children" in kindergarten stories transform into botany in the later years. The truth is always there, it is just transformed with the imagination into something that the little ones can "digest."

Hi Sarah, I know you want to have an inclusive warn loving environment when you say a child is at one with their mother when a child comes into the world does not take into consideration gay surrogacy were there is no mother, but two loving dads. I know the world is changing fast but as educators, you have to be up on inclusive language, it does not feel inclusive when it's assumed a child has a mother as an infant. A child needs to be surrounded by love, but it does not always mean a mother.

I would have strongly preferred a diagram at the start of the video to show all seven-year cycles with a quick ideograph to describe the emphasis of each stage.
Your videos are simply too slow for me. Even at 2x video speed, your presentation is simply too~ slow!
This nine minute video could have been compressed into 2 minutes...
