As much as I enjoyed this movie in 1986, I reported to MCRD in 1987 and quickly realized that no Marine Corp unit would ever become as undisciplined as this supposed Recon Platoon. I'm not sure if this movie was meant to support or insult the Marine Corps, but it sure has some classic one-liners.
Since you picked major Payne who isn’t a ds I’ll pick Clint Eastwood from heartbreak ridge. “This is the ak-47 assault weapon, the preferred weapon of your enemy, and it makes a distinctive sound when fired”
The AK does make a distinctive sound - as most rifles, actually - and that's why the Portuguese Army in Africa was not allowed to use captured Soviet firearms in combat. Everyone should be sure that the sound of a G-3 or HK-21= our guys, and AK-47, SKS and RPD = Enemy. And the G-3 was expected to be used in semiauto only. Those walking point were allowed to carry it in full auto. The problem is, if ambushed, often the first shot was a RPG-2 rocket. 🙁
Friends of mine who served in SE Asia used to caution me that American forces who adopted the AK risked "getting return fire". I've been lucky not to have either the 7.62 or 5.45 fired at me. The G3 is a bear to fire in full auto, as that heavy bolt carrier group is flying along. I did not have enough time with one to used to it. The M14 to me had a lighter recoil than the G3, but they fired the same round. The AK in full auto is really really nice. The Soviets did a good job with one.
