    Can we get a video on 5 different clam species and put them all side by side in there own tanks and do the same test but with all of em.

    • @Reefscom
      @Reefscom  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Will put it on notes to see if it can get done. Logistically, it's very hard to do because both ORA and Biota doesn't have 5 giant clams at once in their facility and i can't really have them hold things for me (not sell them) for my experiment. Not to mention that time lapses like this will take hours to do. Least I can do is ask though 😆

    Interesting but how much of that just settled to the bottom? What would it look like if you stirred the water back up?

    • @Reefscom
      @Reefscom  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To be honest, i dont know/remember how much of it settled on the bottom as i filmed this last year. I'm thinking by the clams opening and closing, it got things moving in the water. Next time, i will try to include another shot from the top as well.

      reefs I can’t believe how fast you replied lol. They are very underrated in our hobby I think so it’s good you did a video focusing in the benefits they have on water quality. I wander if they can also help filter out free swimming fish parasites and diseases? I bet they can

    • @Reefscom
      @Reefscom  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@insanity4224 haha i just picked up my phone to answer few emails before heading to bed and saw your question so thought i would answer. They are very under rated for sure. I know that they are not very pretty compared to other giant clams out there but I do believe that they have their place here in our hobby. :)

      @Reefscom  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@insanity4224 on the topic of consuming the free floating stage of parasite, that's something that I need to ask the godfather of the clams whenever I get a chance to meet with him. :)

    This clam has been top of my list for a while - love the look of them. But maybe they clean too fast?
    What about flow? Do they need to be out of the flow. I am guessing with one of these you don't need a UV.
    I just hope they don't suck up everything which would be bad for LPS
    Amazing presentation - I hope we can get them in the EU

    • @Reefscom
      @Reefscom  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! Flow, you dont need too much. It's in side of my tanks where it has very little flow and it seems to be happy. Honestly, without running icp tests, i cant determine how much it sucks out but from what we can test manually, they seem to be sucking out nitrates, phosphates, calcium, alkalinity and this is guess but silicates. (It cleared up bad diatom bloom within 3 days) btw, dejong imports from them for EU so ask them for it. :)

      @@Reefscom I've been trying to setup a clam tank and only have 4 Tridacna's left and a flame scallop. I went through 13 clams from LA in 1 week and 6 of the Huge Blue Maximas from UC. Just no real long term luck these days. I used to have clams last 8-10 years in the past but the oldest ones I have are only 1-2 years old right now.

    Video was awesome! I’ll have to grab one in the coming months. Do you know the availability of Gigas Clams by chance? Haven’t seen them in the hobby for a long time and the few that are around are 15+ years old.

    • @Reefscom
      @Reefscom  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Seems like you need to address the problem. 🤔🤔 usually predation or poor water quality or small size clams that requires more attention that doesnt get it seems to not do well in long term. What have you tried and what was the issue that lead to their early demise?

  • @OnTheReef
    @OnTheReef 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You say that they are excellent filter feeders (more so than other clams). You have shown us that they will filter our phyto and other filter feeder foods, but are you also saying these clams will also remove detritus and other things from our aquariums? I'm just trying to increase my understanding about what you mean by polishing our aquariums.

    • @Reefscom
      @Reefscom  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not detritus but free floating particles (food or waste) that will contribute to your nitrates and phosphates in your aquarium. It was also observed that possible sillicates were also absorbed because huge diatom outbreak was controlled within 3 days after adding this clam into a small tank of one of the workers here.

    i just started this video but i must ask, are these ok for nano size aquariums less than 20 gallons? im worried it wont do well. any recommendations on other filter feeders?

    • @Reefscom
      @Reefscom  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Any clams, you can keep as a baby as long as you can provide stable and pristine water conditions and parameters. However in few years, you would need to either upgrade or find a new home for these.
