I heard this in my teens a struggling heroin addict, it stuck with me for ever....I'm now a newly divorced 47 Yr old man trying my hardest to see the horizon of life as I sit alone in my 1 bedroom flat. I've progressed once & I shall grow again 🙏❤️ but man it's a weary journey I can tell you....

The Lord Jesus Christ wants you to come to Him, my friend. I’m praying for you. Take this as a sign to seek help at a good Bible-believing church.
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
      ‭‭John‬ ‭3‬:‭16‬ ‭KJV‬‬
God allowed you to go through all of this so that you would seek Him, His forgiveness, and that you would come to receive, by faith, His free gift of eternal life, which He paid through the shed bled of His Son Jesus Christ, who gave His life as the substitutionary atonement for your sins and my sins, so that you and I could have forgiveness of sins and an eternal relationship with Him. Have you placed your faith in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior?

This, and In The Bleak Midwinter (Holst version) are to me about the greatest melodies with lyrics ever done in human history. The music has such purity of melody and intention. Who cannot be soothed, succored, comforted, and uplifted by this music of beauty.

Bingo! You hit the bullseye 🎯. I wrote down the lyrics I found all the verses in the internet. A pastor wrote the lyrics ... Richard Hutchins in 1761. Elizabeth Poston is credited with the melody--pure, sweet, perfect. Public domain. I'm singing it all the time and dream of teaching youth this and other carols to go caroling next December.

Of course many of the songs of Messiah...Handel is my kindred spirit. 1761 as you mentioned...just two years after Handel passed away. Another good song is 'Past Three O'clock...on a cold frosty morning" sigh

Something about this song gives me so much comfort! I listen to it when ever I'm feeling stressed, or if I ever have a bad day at school. I just listen to thier beautiful voices, and think about the words they're saying and somehow I feel....loved. It's amazing. They're so talented.

    Prayer:
Dear God, in the darkness of this season, we look for your light. In the cold, we look for the warmth of your near presence. Oh God, who turns the clock of the seasons in your hand, be near to us in every season of the soul, we pray. Just as you were there in the ebullience of the Spring, the sunshine of the Summer, and the golden glow of Autumn, may you be here now in our Winter too. May we worship you with heart and soul and mind and strength this day. Amen

    Jesus Christ the Apple Tree
The tree of life my soul hath seen
Laden with fruit and always green
The tree of life my soul hath seen
Laden with fruit and always green
The trees of nature fruitless be
Compared with Christ the applle tree
His beauty doth all things excel
By faith I know but ne'er can tell
His beauty doth all things excel
By faith I know but ne'er can tell
The glory which I now can see
In Jesus Christ the apple tree.
For happiness I long have sought
And pleasure dearly I have bought
For happiness I long have sought
And pleasure dearly I have bought
I missed of all but now I see
'Tis found in Christ the apple tree.
I'm weary with my former toil
Here I will sit and rest a while
I'm weary with my former toil
Here I will sit and rest a while
Under the shadow I will be
Of Jesus Christ the apple tree.
This fruit does make my soul to thrive
It keeps my dying faith alive
This fruit does make my soul to thrive
It keeps my dying faith alive
Which makes my soul in haste to be
With Jesus Christ the apple tree.

I have about 6 recordings of it, all by different choirs. It is a beautiful song, not necessarily needing to be sung just at Christmas time. It is a song that can be sung at any time of the year. A song to sing when one feels lost, despondent, but also for joy about the beauty that is all around us, but often overlooked through/by all the turmoil, and strife, and disasters our beautiful planet and it's living things are enduring. 🙂❤🎼🎵🎶

Its a beautiful metaphor: Song of Songs 2:3 As an apple-tree among the trees of the wood, so is my beloved among the sons. Under its shadow I delighted to sit, and its fruit was sweet to my taste.
Jesus Christ is truly everything to the soul that loves Him!
In this vein, 'Union and Communion' by Hudson Taylor is excellent.
