      This camera was not making sense! Bad autofocus (for vlogging camera), additional crop for digital stabilization + micro 4/3 sensor.. was nightmare! And what Panasonic did? They just stopped listening... I guess when they seeing how many cameras was saling it was clear that this camera was a mistake!

    A G100 has found it's way into becoming my 2nd body for event photography behind an OM-1, and 1st choice for travel leaving my GX8 and GM5 on the shelf. Do wish they'd bung all the G9 tech into a new version though.

    3:30 The 10 min rec limit is easily removed by following the myriad of guides on TH-cam. But it starts to get a little warm around the 20 min mark. No dropped frames, but I haven't recorded anything longer than that because the battery is pretty much dead by then.

    I have a G100, and I love it. I only shoot stills and I use it as a throw in my bag and take anywhere camera because I can use all of my M43 lenses on it. There are times when my G9 and even my G80 are too big to lug around, and this fills the gap.

    I love-love-love my little GX850 with its 14-42mm power zoom lens! It was my most used camera on a recent South American journey despite the fact that it doesn't have IBIS and has 5 minute 4k video limit. A viewfinder was the only thing I truly wished that this little gem of camera had. Voila! My new-to-me G100 (thanks Emily and MBP) has everything my lovely, little GX850 has along with a viewfinder. The small package of the G100 fits my needs and in the palm of my hand. No IBIS, no problem. If I need extremely slow shutter speeds or use very long lenses, I have my G9 or old schoolphotography techniques. I can do short 4k videos clips with the G100 even though they gobble up 1gb per minute. I can use the 4k stabilization crop as an advantage for magnifying distant objects in landscape videos or small objects nature videos. My arms are long enough so that I can even vlog (is that a word?) In 4k without looking like a felon or used car salesman. The simplicity of the G100 puts the MICRO back in m4/3.

    Perhaps the better option (albeit much more $) is the new OM5 (or the older OM 5 iii, similar but less $). Not much bigger or heavier, but has good AF and weather sealed. It (you) took some great photos on your trips with the G100 though!

    I've never held one of these, but it looks to me like an excellent choice for taking high quality photos in good light. And for photographers who are into M43, isn't that kind of the whole point of the system? It looks fantastic for stills in the outdoors, which is over 90% of what I use my cameras for. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, I think it's time I tried one…

  • @williamburkholder769

    What Panasonic needs is a phase detect AF system that knocks our socks off. They do everything else quite well. AF is better than it was, but that is still not good enough. That said, I'll buy a GH6... and turn AF off most of the time.

    • @MicroFourNerds
      @MicroFourNerds  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@SpaceSignaaL ibis is super handy for photography.
      With the g100, without a stabilised lens, you need quite a high shutter speed to get anything usable.
      I also love handheld long exposures which are an impossibility with the g100 and very doable with the gx85.
      Also, perhaps most importantly, for low light performance. with ibis you can lower your shutter speed significantly and get much cleaner images. No way to do that without ibis or a tripod. It’s a great workaround to combat the smaller sensor.
      Personal preference of course, but I find it really helpful for photography as I seldom use a tripod if I can help it.

    i think 4k is just a byproduct of being under the panasonic umbrella, but i think for beginner hybrid shooters or primarily stills shooters, because this would be a perfect travel camera(and imo that is how panasonic should have marketed it) but for that crowd 1080p should be enough. and there are a lot less restrictions on 1080. and it is also the cheapest camera you can use with panasonics webcam software.
    wait, what if they were poised to market it as a travel camera, but 2020 was the rigid release date, and they had to spin it at the last minute and thought, "well who else could this camera be for? vloggers! they dont go out much do they?" and this is now my headcanon conspiracy theory for why this camera. 😂

    I got a second hand G85 and a G100 at the same time - if I use the same lenses on both , the G100 seems to crop the image more than the G85?? Also it performs a lot worse than the G85 in low light and it seems to not be able to handle strong yellows etc - overall I am really disappointed with it and I almost returned it after buying it as there is this goofy button that turns the monitor off and not obvious - this is my second camera if the G85 has issues but a real disappointment

I think they rushed this to market to compete in the Niche and maybe it works well maybe not in the Niche. Also with no IBIS, 1/500 max SS, they are charging too much for it IMHO. Again, they didn't make this with me in mind so I hope it does well, I just won't get it, I have way too many other camera bodies that do much better and what I like to shoot.

      Oooh, I shall agree to disagree with that haha. It's nothing like the g9, which is excellent. Comparitively:
      There's no IBIS,
      No Weather sealing,
      Plastic build quality,
      Much worse evf,
      Electronic only shutter after 1/500th of a second,
      Much worse recording limits compared to the g9 (I'd take the g9 any day for content creation!)
      Much worse burst modes
      No pre burst modes
      Older, crippled processing from the ancient G7,
      Smaller battery
      Single sd slot

    I LOVE MY G100 Emily.
    It depends upon your definition of VLOGGING. In real terms vlogging is a video log, it doesn’t have to be mobile. So from that point of view it’s great. But most bloggers consider vlogging to be filming on the move. In the high case it’s pretty poor, especially if you are an old duffer with a false hip like me.
    I actually find the Auto focus to be ok for the way I use it. Especially for face detect, it never lets me down.
    4K? I don’t know as I never film in 4K. On 1080/30 I find it excellent. I find 4K on my videos just adds so much in file size and transfer time.
    It’s super light and super small. Box ticked.
    Who is it for? It’s for me.

I use it mainly for photos and so recently bought an off camera flash- and BOOM 💥- thats when I discovered one inherent flaw. After much research (basically youtube) the camera has electronic first curtain shutter. So with the flash (both inbuilt and external) the shutter speed cannot be adjusted to beyond 1/50th of a second which has turned out to be a huge bummer for me
    UPDATE:
    So the G100 can support HSS up to 1/500. So this makes it the smallest camera to do so. It’s a wonderful camera. Regarding the autofocus-I’d suggest refraining from the kit lens and getting the appropriate prime lens. I noticed there is a difference then.

    I think I have "THE LENS" for this camera, but it's no longer available- it's the Panasonic 14-42 PZ with the Panasonic DMW-GWC1 .79x wide angle converter specifically made for that lens at 14mm. This would give the camera a 21mm FF equivalent with stabalization, making it relatively serviceable. I'd just use it in 1080p without the crop on a 4k timeline- no one would know the difference. I know this because I've done with the GX800, a very similar camera to the G100. For vlogging, just use single point focus and don't move too much.

    I have other Lumix M43s, but I also bought the new G100D (with Oled and USB C) and I think it perfectly embodies the spirit of the M43. Everyone complains that the M43 has lost its philosophy because cameras are as big as Full Frame. So why not welcome this "real" M43 with a benevolent look. Sure, it has its limits, but I use all the lenses I want and the sensor is really good for taking tourist photos or to pair with a G90 to avoid having to change lenses. The G100 is exactly what I need as a hiker and explorer and allows me to save the G9 for more serious, photography specific tasks.

    The G100 has DFD+CDAF which can and will give it PDAF+CDAF-like AF capability (quite possibly quicker to react too) - but only with Lumix lenses. Do note it is not just CDAF but DFD+CDAF. And there's the rub, Ollie lenses will not use the DFD resulting in slower focusing and unsuitable for video.
    You do want a Power-OIS lens for video without IBIS. The Lumix PZ14-42 is generally a better lens than the mini 12-32 I had on the GM1 (gone). That may not be wide enough for the selfie stick but you can cheat a bit with the image format. For reasons I cannot fathom out the Lumix G7 is still on Panasonic books, it makes a good B-cam. It is more sophisticated than the G100 and available very cheaply used.

    Yes the 10 minutes 4k recording limit is kinda dumb. Maybe the small body makes it easier to overheat so they limit the recording time. I never intend to use my G100 to vlog so it's not a big deal for me. It's the perfect second camera to use with my collection of m43 lenses and it's a no brainer for throw in the bag street photography and on backpacking trips if I pair this with a small lens like the 17mm, 25mm f1.8.

    Pana should have put the technology into an GX1 form factor, so NO tilt-screen of course (makes it too big!). And a new EVF optional, maybe Leica Visoflex compatible... . With weather sealing THAT would be an uncompromised photographers tool everyone could carry all the time. Too bad Panasonic screwed the GX/GF Form factor over time - no wonder no one wanted to buy these (last usable one: GF6 which has at least a lever instead of a clickable scroll wheel as GF1/GX1... . Why the GF6 can only change aperture via scroll wheel is beyond me... . Lever dropped on GF7 - THAT was smart)

  • @orangorill
    @orangorill ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think the main problem is that it was basically a slightly worse GX9, a couple of years later, at a higher price. It should have been a straight upgrade, not a pricier sidegrade. It's as if Panasonic for some reason decided to copy the EOS M50, while their own GX9 and G90 (and even G9, occasionally) were already better options at more or less the same price point. It's not an inherently bad camera, but it doesn't make all that much sense, except maybe in terms of margins.

  • @marksmodellingmadness
    @marksmodellingmadness ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Even 1080 recording is limited to twenty minutes and that has a slight crop too...
    In my opinion the G80 was a much better vlogging kit (ibis, mic in, weather sealed with the plastic fantastic 12-60 kit lens), it's only downside being it was a bit bigger and heavier.
    My G100 is currently having it's back dial repaired, it started to fail after 18 months of near daily use. Something to watch out for. I can't wait to get it back, I miss the little beast :)

    I used one a bit, would have bought one if I didn't have a GX85. I only shoot stills, work bodies are EM5iii and G9 for MFT and Leica CL/Sigma fp for l-mount aps-c/full frame (not why I use the fp, I just like it). Lack of IBIS isn't a killer, neither the CL or fp have IBIS, eshutter isn't bad (I use eshutter if possible or if I'm required not to on every camera), AF doesn't matter to me, I'm either using full MF m-mount lenses or mostly shoot still enough subjects, so it's fine. Really came down to the GX85 just being better for me in every way that mattered for the cheap light body. It's only 16mp, but it's a very good 16mp image for the size. To be fair, the only body I have that isn't truly "compact" atm for work is the G9. The CL is tiny, the fp is on par with the rest once you add the small grip I like (I don't faff with the evf).

    Bit late to the party, but I believe outside of M43, the most hated or at least most dismissed camera is the Nikon Z5. Not without reason, since its specs leave a lot to be desired (e.g. its AF is fairly terrible for anything but landscape photography). I don't believe that any respectable photographer would wanna be caught dead with that thing, even if it were just sitting on their shelf collecting dust.

    Someone made a short documentary with it, using an anamorphic lens. Seemed great. So, what is de g100 capable of ? Shooting movies, street and general photography in a small form factor. It's a pity marketers and reviewers seem going hand to hand destroying the g100. For travelers ? Yup, as long as you don't shoot under the Niagara Falls, it will work fine. Seeing the boom of street photography, Panasonic just missed the spot, and the comments here show how much it is street wise.

    I think it's not so much of a case of hating the G100.. I think it's more a case of Panasonic Lumix users feeling like they were sitting on pins and needles ,,looking for a way forward (Focus) or assurances that M4/3 was still in the long range plans in the midst of full frame releases. What we got was a camera for the blogging community ,,which at the time of release was thought to be somewhat passe'. I remember driving 45 miles to the only local dealer for a Factory Rep day, and the G100 was all he would talk about. So..wrong camera at the wrong time. Leave it to you to make excellent use of it and really show what it can do. It's like ...me..never understood the continuing love people have for the GM-1....until I bought one.

    Yeah their marketing department has dropped the ball before. Managing people's expectations is so important. The marketing that disappointed me was the GX9. It is a good camera in it's own right but my expectations was it was going to be an upgrade to the GX8 - it wasn't it was more a GX80 mark 2. If it had been marketed as such I would not have had negative feelings towards Panasonic.

  • @AoyagiAichou
    @AoyagiAichou ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I don't know, if you pop by /r/Lumix, it's not all that hated! As for its treatment, other equally rubbish "vlogging" cameras ( ZV1F, R10, Z30) didn't get nearly as kicked about. One thing to note: you can vlog at fHD, no need for 4K. Most people won't be any wiser. I don't quite understand this obsession with 4K. And most people basically ignore just how small and especially how cheap the G100 is. 8bit VLog is great for that tiny bit of dynamic range boost and slapping a Varicam LUT on it. The majority of people have no use for 10bit anyway, *especially* vloggers.
    I'm using the G100 as a secondary/tertiary camera for events (photos, tiny amount of videos) and as a webcam.
    I think the G80 largely debunks it, but the G100 has somewhat better AFC, better sensor, and slow motion, plus all the new features. Pick your poison I guess.

    The G100 seems to make these compromises for one simple reason which is so those of us who get the more expensive Lumix does not feel shortchanged. Anyway, I shoot with a GX9 and G95 and I love them, M43 sensors and all. I just have one problem. When i am shooting with flash, I am not able to get the camera to show the exposure without flash. They always brighten up the image with the assumption the flash will be enough, and they are never accurate because I sometimes bounce my flash, or the flash simply could not reach the background. Anyone can advise how I turn this preview off. I just want to see the exposure "before flash".
