Me, too!!! I was with a painting group in Inveraray--and I painted a rowan tree--and I gave it to the boy who helped me at that old settlement--the name won't come right now! It was and is a lovely tree!
My sweet Mum learned this song at the school when she was a wee lassie... and we had the pipes playing this tune at her funeral on Friday... a lovely version.. she would have fair loved it...
My mother in her late 80’s told me of a memory she had from when she was about three years old, sat on her mother’s lap in a big school hall in Glasgow, listening to her big sister Annie singing this song on the stage. Annie died from TB not long after. The family had been unable to afford the medicine or doctor’s visits that could have saved her life. No NHS in those days.
This IS So beautiful, but very sad as well. I'm 60 years and raised 6 children, but I see them as babies like it was yesterday. It makes me very sad. I also remember my wonderful parents who raised 8 children. We're all still kicking. Thank God. My mother never sat down at the dinner table, even though my father tried to get her to do so. She fluttered around us, serving us, in her full body, Edith Bunker. Apron! I miss HER SO MUCH ! Life IS Fleeting.
Wow! What an amazing song! I've known since I was five that I was adopted & now at 56 I find out that my true biological last name is MacNaughton & that this song is the official song of Clan MacNaughton.
I'm a Scot, now living in the North West of England, and was sent the song by my American lady, after telling her of the song. It is such a beautiful song and so well sung that it brought a lump to my throat,,,, thank you so much.
I had the pleasure of seeing John McDermott in concert several times. On one occasion, he sang Danny Boy without a musical background and just relied on the power of his wonderful voice. That is true God given talent.
I, too, am a "newcomer" to the McDermott voice. Remarkable. The songs are worthwhile, and the presentions precise and sincere. A really enjoyable addition to my listening. Thank you for sharing.
What a beautiful heartfelt and heartwarming rendition of this Burns' song. I so wish these songs were as well revered here in Burns' own county and country. Thank you for remembering :)

I have a Rowan tree ( mountain ash) in my garden near a wall , it seems to have yellow blossoms I now it has mythological Tree. It is beautiful , long waving branches I will look up, the symbols My late Cat Mabh loved it she could hide from me, it was her favourite spot.
Rowan Ash trees were sacred to the Druids. Customs involving the Rowan survive still, people just don't realize it. Even in the early 20th century it was known to pass thru a circle of Rowan boughs to cleanse one of bad juju. Other very interesting customs have survived over the many, many years since ancient Druids met in sacred groves to revere and invoke nature.

I saw a very very strange tree that seemed to be looking at me.It looked at me with all it's decaying bark. The yellow journalistic wrinkles on it's sides were bent and very dark.I ran to get away ,but when I stopped and turned to see,the tree was bending from left to right to get a look at me.ADonovan43

a beautiful rendition. a bit formal for me. I tend to prefer more folksy versions, and this seems more like an art song. but it is still great.
Does anyone know what the Martyr's Psalm referred to in the final verse is?
