    these swords seem to be functionally very similar to the Roman Spatha or migration era European swords

    It's interesting how pretty much every culture on earth has at one point two kind of straight sword (edge-dependent) and two types of curved sword (one for each direction)

    That Saif looks like it was descended from the Roman Spatha.

    I had a sword with the "MK" initials in a circle and according to a collector who specializes in Ethiopian swords, it is the trademark of M. Kevorkoff & Co from Harar. It would appear that he was a supplier of blades from Europe during the reign of Menelik II.

      Different cultures seemed to have different preferred manufacturers.
      Indians preffered british blades
      Africans in general seem to like german blades.
      The balkans and caucasus seemed to like italian and spanish blades.

    Saif is simply a generic word for a sword in Arabic.

    Basically an africanized roman spatha, which considering their roots as an Orthodox Christian/Catholic nation & their trade in goods as well as cultural ideas it doesn't surprise me at all.
