Another question 1. What are the things we can do to start to find the sound peculiar to us and how to we then know how it should be produced and sustained
You need to LEARN TO LISTEN. Learn to listen to yourself. To do that you must learn to HEAR PROPERLY. Hearing and Listening are crafts that must be learnt. It will be difficult to develop what you cannot hear. It will be difficult to tailor what you don’t have a grip over. 1. Listen and hear yourself. 2. Accept what you hear. 3. Make notes of your sound, tone and range. 4. Develop No.3. 5. Learn some of the basics of singing such as Elocution, Breathing and Phonetics. 6. Get a book and read it out. Record yourself and listen to what you’ve done. You must learn to hear what everyone hears of you. Start with these and register for my Artist Masterclass coming up next month!
Additional Question 1. Sometimes it may look like we sound like another person, it is okay and alright if we sound like another person but then we then add our uniqueness to it so it can be then customised to us and then that becomes our Brand???? For example when Mali Music came out, many people began to sound like him but along the way some people added something else to their singing that made them different, is it okay doing that???
Very good question. As an artist, you might start off sounding like someone else but in the long run, it backfires. Why? You’ll always remind people of the individual you sound like! God made EVERYONE unique. What makes you unique is buried on your inside. It will take someone else to identify and help you groom it until it becomes visible. Every unique artist you hear was ‘deliberate’ and ‘intentional’ about their sound and tone. You need to be equipped with the tools to birth what God deposited on your inside. Most times, you might not be able to do that on your own (no matter how much you follow a mentor). Instead of adding ‘something’ else to your style; DEVELOP YOUR OWN STYLE of singing. Trust me when I tell you that ‘if singing is your gift, then all you need is resident within you’. What you need is grooming. You need to be taught what to focus on, what to stay away from, what to develop and what to ignore. God never made copies of gifts. That many people sing doesn’t mean they have what it takes to stand out. Hope this helps. If you need more help, contact me via Instagram.
