  • Director Lars Von Trier’s 2004 film about a woman on the run from mobsters boasts a remarkable cast including Nicole Kidman, Lauren Bacall, Udo Kier, Ben Gazzara and James Caan. Von Trier mounts the film in a rigidly formalist style (the movie is presented in nine chapters) and the minimalist staging recalls the tradition of self-reflexive plays from Our Town to The Threepenny Opera. Critically acclaimed, the three hour film took a box office drubbing, due in no small part to having opened in only nine theaters.

Wow. That is a trailer that was so terrified of the central conceit that they did everything they could to hide it. Good Lord! They even had to start walling off portions of the screen and showing clips through the windows. OH MY GOD! 1:55 in, the studio built the walls they wish he'd used into the trailer!!!! -- No walls in the movie, you know what makes audiences comfortable? Walls. Can you make the trailer about walls? -- But Dogville is absolutely my favorite Lars Von Trier flick. The no walls deal was perfect for showing how good we are at looking the other way. Here we are, 10 feet away from each other, willfully oblivious to the lives of other. Ignoring anything ugly. Really, really awesome.

One of the world, right now, most interesting horror movie directors talk about one of the world's most interesting directors. Makes me totally happy (But am always happy to see new from TFH)! Thanks for your existence!

The best thing Von Trier has ever done is Riget. I don't think non-Scandinavians would get it though, and that makes me really sad. It had a perfect blend between insane, laugh out loud comedy, disgusting gore and terrifying horror.
I wish more people saw it, but at the same time I'm not so sure if it would translate very well to people outside of Scandinavia.

I don't understand how people can enjoy Lars Von Trier. Me and my friend went to see Melancholia and a pair of tits were drinking wine in front of us in an almost empty theatre. I left so bumbed out that it flattened the rest of the night.

Sounds like you'd dropped acid that night or something. You should really stay away from drugs, dude.

I don't think I feel bad about having a different taste in movies than the person who refers to women as a "pair of tits"

Nicole's whispering got too much in the second half that it made me want to turn the movie off.

The one thing I took away from seeing Dogville is that all the things it deliberately lacks are in fact necessary for an enjoyable movie. This was a gimmick movie where the gimmick fell flat.

Everything about Lars Von Trier just smacks of hollow pretension and cynicism to me.

@@oldlogin3383 I’ve seen The Element of Crime, Europa, Epidemic.
Though that was five years ago before I saw Antichrist and Melencholia. And I’ve changed my assessment. He his a filmmaker who seems to actively try to make his audiences miserable.
