Wizball is one of the best games for the C64, and Mayhem in Monsterland is probably the game that gets the most out of the hardware. The issue is they're both PAL so may not work properly on a NTSC system. The same would go for any other games I could suggest such as Creatures 1 and 2 and the Turrican games.
The thing that arguably set the C64 apart in that era the most was its smooth scrolling. None of your games demonstrated that (except the Last V8 which unfortunately didn't work). So many shooters and platform games took advantage of that. Of course hardware sprites and the sound chip especially, were also great. It's a pity you don't have anywhere near the best software to show off the machine.
Hardware suggestions! Those original joysticks can be painful to use now; check out a modern one called the Hyperkin "Trooper" for a smooth gaming experience. As for your sound issues, those old 6581 SID chips in the breadboxes are particularly prone to failure -- especially as they run much hotter than the 8580 SIDs used in the later 64Cs. Your C64 may have a metal shield inside that provides heat-sinking to the chips; if it does not, the SID should certainly have a heat-sink added for longevity. (I personally replace failed 6581s with ARMSIDs, rather than pay top dollar for another 6581 that may also fail sooner rather than later.) -- JC
I have about 6 - C64s and one of the software packages that I have that I am most proud of is an original 1st edition of John Madden Football in the box. The C64 is a fun machine to troubleshoot although it does have a couple of chips that like to go bad. The PLA is the No. 1 chip that likes to go bad, however there are plenty of modern replacements for it. The SID (Sound) will sometimes will give you problems and then the VIC (Video) which is difficult to replace.
When my summer vacation starts in September, i better switch on my Commodore 64 and Amiga 500, and continue playing... again 😹👍🕹️. This video deserves a big retrospective like 👍 from Vantaa, Finland 🇫🇮 😺👍. COMMODORE 64 AND AMIGA FOREVER 😺👍🕹️!
I played The Last V8 on a friend’s Commodore 64 back in the 80s. It didn’t have the bug with your car immediately jumping off the track and crashing every time, so there might be something wrong with your copy. On the other hand, I remember it being a thouroughly underwhelming and unfun game anyway, so you aren’t missing much.
Check the version of The Last V8 and make sure it is an NTSC-compatible version, not a PAL version. PAL software will often run and execute on an NTSC machine, but will have graphical glitches and may not execute properly.
My top 2 games for the C= 64 is curiously both made in 1984: Impossible Mission and Dropzone. You should try them out (the latter also on the Atari 8-bits).

I spent so much time playing Booty. The pixel perfect positioning to go down ladders was the cause of a few rage quits. Otherwise a lot of fun.

You got to try Stroker, by far the best c64 game ever made.

There's not enough quicksand in modern games.
Don't feel too bad about The Last V8. The music and vioce synth were the best part of the game. The actual gameplay sucked!
There's much better games for the C64.

M.U.L.E, Mario Bros., almost any arcade game, Test Drive was one of the best driving games.
