    One of my favorite Rush albums! Every song is great, IMO. Yes, I love the musicianship, but I mostly connect with the lyrics on this album. This album has some of Neil's best lyricism, IMHO.

    Also has the brilliant The Pass on it ( and Available Light)

    Conversely, in reaching for words that weren’t there and going with ‘Fuck it’, in self-defence, you nailed it more succinctly, than with any words you might otherwise have found. Only saw Rush live the once - Wembley Arena, 1988 - but I’d similarly run out of words within the opening three songs. Greetings to you, from Hertfordshire.

    My first exposure to Rush was the synth era, with my father's brand new cassette album of Power Windows. I was 6 years old in 1985 when it came out and I was hooked from then on. By 1989 I bought this album on cassette as well, at 10 years old, it's one of the first pieces of music I ever owned. So it holds a special meaning to me. This track and "The Pass" really resonate and hit deep.

    This has to be one of the most underrated Rush songs ever. I started going to Rush concerts back in 1992 during their Roll the Bones tour(another album that is underrated) and I had to wait until 2010 to see this song live. Alex Lifeson’s fade out guitar solo at the end always makes me picture an eagle soaring over a snow capped mountain on a clear day with blue skies.

  • @aj_macready

    Dude. What a great, heartfelt reaction. I feel much the same. I love -- LOVE -- old school, super prog, rocked up, balls out Rush. But the thing is, I love EVERY stage of Rush through their career. Roll The Bones was my high school Rush album so in many ways it's my favorite. Is it their finest hour? No. But it's got some absolutely kickass songs and I dig them all. The 80s synth phase is great because I love how they experimented and pushed at the edges of their sound and found someplace new to hang out for awhile, and they brought the damn songwriting for sure. Some of their best constructed songs come from that era. And then go past that to Counterparts and Test For Echo, phenomenal songs and playing. Snakes and Arrows? One of their best, and Clockwork Angels brought it all home with excellence. I could list every album (and have come close, so I'll stop) but what I mean is, it's cool to be in love with all that Rush did, in different ways and for different reasons...even if there's really only ONE reason. And that's because it's Rush. Thanks for this video, dude. It makes me forget everything going on too, to see someone get hit like this.

    Presto tends to sit at the bottom of many Rush album rankings, but it's always been one of my favorites. I got into Rush in 1998, right at the beginning of the hiatus that resulted because of the tragedies that befell Neil. Their '80s synth albums were what originally drew me in and, although Presto sits just outside of that period, it still retains many characteristics of those albums. In the past 22 years, I've delved deep into every one of their albums and love them all for very different reasons. Loving your reactions and I can assure you that you're in for a ride. Welcome aboard the Rocinante!

    3:45……hahahaha
    Tone stops to react about the synth……rambles a bit….can’t put words to his thoughts because obviously…how do you put words to what you’re hearing…..and proceeds to ramble until he just says “fuck it” and hits play.
    Poetic. I love it.

  • @ischmidt
    @ischmidt 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Both the songwriting and the lyrics got much more mature starting with 1981's Moving Pictures, and both elements were in career-high form on this record. The lyrics for every track on Presto are mind-blowingly good, and the music is so thoughtfully done. The acoustic guitar works on this song like nothing else would've.

      @@surfeit5910 Well that has an easy fix, Turn up the record! I prefer that over brickwalled volume wars any day.
      The original record specifically says in the liner notes that it is at a quieter volume to retain full sound quality while using a little more time on a record than usual. Its says right in the album due to this "play it loud!"
      Played loud on a good system I would put it up as easily one of the best sounding Rush records ever.
      People complain about the mixing on this and on HYF and on Vapor Trails etc. The mixing and productions are supposed to be unique and have character. They never wanted all their albums ot sound like Moving Pictures, there's were much deeper soundscapes to work on.
      I feel like a lot of fans just checked out with those soundscapes instead of trying to figure out why they purposefully made entire albums sounds like it was recorded outside in the snow.
      I'm not saying you are one of those people... I am just saying... many of what fans call strange mixing decisions were actually them making leaps forward and purposefully giving each album its own character (much like Bowie did).

    I rally like Presto. The song and the album. It is usually not a favorite for Rush fans but I have always connected to it. IT reminds me of Signals for some reason. The music on the album is good but the lyrics are what really do it for me. Presto, the song, is a little different but not different for Rush. Same type of song progression and framing but interesting use of acoustic guitars. This song reminds me of a friend of mine who died when I was in early college. She had a hard life and was murdered in her driveway one night. They never found the killer. The song takes me back to that time period and my experiences with her in life and right after I heard that she was dead. In the end the song does not tear me to pieces. It is nice to reflect on a good friendship and all it meant to me.

I come out of the old groups like Yes, ELP, Genesis, King Crimson, etc. Rush was like all the best bands, they're incredible live. There are a lot of bands who are really good in the studio, but they really don't translate into live performances. One more thing, if you like Band Maid, which is my absolute favorite all female Japanese band, Give Love Bites a listen. All female power metal and they're incredible live too. I persnally am not a power metal guy, but this band is awfully good.

      @@tonebonetelevision If you talking about doing Yes I have a HUGE Yes and related collection. They're actually my favorite all-time band even though they're getting long in the tooth and I don't know how much longer they're going to keep going. The original band started in 1968 and got their big break when Sly And The Family Stone didn't show up for a gig in England. The club manager knew Jon Anderson of Yes and the band also had a place just a short distance from the venue. He called them up and within a very short time they were on stage playing in front of the Beatles, the Stones and a bunch of other heavy hitters of the time and also a group of label guys. They were "discovered" because of that basically. I won't go into pre-Yes as that's another whole story. There have been a ton of people in Yes but they've always managed to stay identifiable as Yes. There era you're talking about is the Trevor Rabin era which really splintered the fan base at the time. A lot of the old fans didn't like him because he was too pop/rock but he saved the band because he wrote Owner Of A Lonely Heart (basically) which went #1 in the world basically. He only got into the band because Alan White and Chris Squire were doing sessions with Jimmy Page and Robert Plant shortly after John Bonham died. That didn't pan out and the only thing left are the XYZ sessions (which I have a copy of). Rabin also almost joined Asia but that didn't work out. I have recordings of some of those sessions too. Anyway, the albums from that era are 90125, 9012Live, Big Generator and Talk. After Rabin left Yes he went to Hollywood and has written a bunch of film scores such as Remember The Titans and Armageddon to only name two. The other odd thing about the 80's Yes is that there were really two versions floating around the countryside engaged in lawsuits. There was Yes which was Squire, Rabin, White and Kaye and then Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman, Howe and that group used mainly Tony Levin on Bass and also Jeff Berlin. Remember, this is just a Cliff's notes version of this single period in Yes history. There have been many books written about the band and, of course, I have them. The original group lineup was Jon Anderson, Chris Squire (they formed the band together), Bill Bruford, Peter Banks and Tony Kaye. I'll stop or there will be another book written. Early Yes sounds far different from the time period you're thinking of exploring. Oh, and just for giggles there were two versions of Yes for a couple of years just a while ago again. This band's history is one of the craziest out there.

    I'd call Presto their most underrated record. Mostly because of the production and recording... Late 80s digital was... Unkind to the music. The 20-bit CD remaster is much better, but the vinyl LP is the only way to hear this... I think there were a couple of half-speed, 180 gram analog remasters, which restore the missing midrange bloom.

    It is a beautiful song, even it "Presto" isn't my favorite Rush album. But, heck...it's Rush! I can't not like it! I do love all Rush and this is a good-to-great Rush album, depending on which song you are on. The best songs are Show Don't Tell, Chain Reaction, The Pass, Presto, Scars (TB, this is an insane tune!!), Red Tide and Available Light. Those are the best songs but the other ones are good too! Yes! Do a drum solo!

    Atmospheric keyboards combined with better songwriting/maturity is why 80's Rush will always own 70's Rush. Both are great, but 80's wins hands down. Like Neil said, the early Rush albums are like Kindergarten paintings on the Fridge. Important for development, but Rush hit their stride starting with Permanent Waves.

      @carlgibbons5777 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kirklandraab1999 We'll agree to disagree on that. lol ALL of my favorite Lifeson solos come from the 80's. Most of my "goosebump" songs come from the 80's. Most of my fav lyrics come from the 80's. The records sound so much better as far as production. Geddy's "screeching" vocals suddenly became much more accessible. 80's drum sound beats 70's by a mile. Rush were definitely "unique" in the 70's, but many of those early records were quite weird from a stylistic/lyric perspective. However...I think ALL Rush is better than most band's best stuff. Respect your opinion as music is subjective. Cheers!

    There a scene in one of the Rush documentaries (Beyond the Lighted Stage?) where Tim Commorford says "When my favorite bass player of all time started spending more and more time on keys, I kinda lost interest." While that's not a direct quote, it's in the ballpark. That's kinda what I felt, like ESPECIALLY on Time Stands Still. I adore that song, but it annoys me at the very same time.
