    Good clarity of collision avoidance. I have to say my years on the sea I have always had situational awareness in possible collision scenarios. I learned at an early age to err on the side of safety at sea and to follow also the Law of Tonnage ( unwritten Rule to
    allow the larger vessel adequate sea room for manovering especially in restricted channels and close quarter operations)

    Hi Sir, can you explain to me why do you think it's better for the bulk to alter her course 90° to starboard instead of 90° to port?
    In my opinion, it's better to alter to port and then to pass astern. Thanks, for the video and for your time =)

      Just watch video till the end, there is explanation of that. :)

      @@erffinek Yes but still. If the container vessel is conditioned by her draft, the green bulk carrier needs to give her way regardless the fact that the container vessel is on her PS - As per rule 18 d) - All vessels in normal conditions must stay clear from vessels conditioned by their drafts (which is the case of the container vessel). So I agree with TheArena7 and the best in this case and assuming we are in open sea and no more vessels around is - turn bold to port and pass clear astern.

    • @roybennett3780
      @roybennett3780 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Francisco Pessoa There are two reasons why the bulk carrier should not turn to port. 1) The container ship may slow down or stop as it is the giveaway vessel. 2) Or the container ship may turn to starboard to avoid collision as she would be expecting the bulk carrier to turn to starboard or Stand on (hold course and speed) as the rules require. The container ship would not be expecting the bulk carrier to turn to port. A turn to Port by the bulk carrier puts the risk of collision up not down.

      @@roybennett3780 ok and what about rule 18 d) i)? It says that all vessels not RAM must (if conditions allow) to not stay in the way CBD vessels right? The container vessel knows she fits in that caregory. So why is it so wrong from them to think we will comply with rule 18?
      I don´t like the ideia of turning to port too because that is turning against her but still, if she does not alter course because she is CBD and we have the space why not passing astern from her by rule 18 instead of waiting her to manouver by rule 15? And then make a 90º course alteration to SB.
      My doubt is just about the fact that the container vessel is a CBD vessel. If not, no question at all.

    • @samw2670
      @samw2670 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Francisco Pessoa if the CBD is far away on port side crossing then you would alter to port passing stern, she might slow down for you. if the CBD is close then you would alter to stb or slow down. This depends on its speed and if in a narrow channel. CBD can only slow down it cannot move out of the way so it all depends on your ship in respect to hers.

    Please advise.
    Situation CBD on port side shown by surveyor..
    What action..??
    1. Early action alter course to port n pass her stern..
    2. Reduce speed in ample time and allow her to pass ahead.
    3. Alter course to starboard, parallel to CBD and reduce speed allow her to go ahead and then pass her stern..
    Different surveyors different ideas.. Last time I answered 2. And he failed me saying I sud have altered to port for CBD n said i have no knowledge of rule 8f.

      Answer 3. CBD is still a PDV, so you never alter to P for a PDV on Port Bow per Rule 15. Bear in mind that if she is uncertain of your action, the CBD vessel may alter to STBD, i.e. resulting in a head-on if you've altered to P.
      This is assuming that Risk of Collision has been established

      @@richardvincent5358 but if you are far away and risk of collision doesnt yet exist, you can alter to port as long as rule 17 says you cant alter to port if vessel on your port side in case when Risk of Collision already exists? right?
