    @disadadi8958 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    7:00 but if you have a full frame and you only use a portion of it, i.e., cropping it, you no longer capture as much data as before.
    Yes, it's not a big deal on a phone because the optics aren't sharp enough blah blah but technically speaking, crop factor on a big sensor does reduce the quality.

  • @kaspergaram
    @kaspergaram ปีที่แล้ว +3

    This is kinda misleading to be honest. Matti, I love your videos, but cropping in is definitely not the same thing as zooming in optically. You could also just use the "normal" focal length and crop it later on, and that would be the same result as cropping it in while taking the photo. It's not the same as zooming in optically. There's still 3 cameras and then 4 crop presets. I'm not saying the phone cameras are bad in any way, I love what Apple and other brands are doing, but it's still not the same as having an optical zoom

    The "48mp" sensor is more like 12mp when it comes to actual detail because it's a quad bayer sensor. And when you use one of the made up lenses, it loses even more detail. It is not magic, it's cropping. The phone has 3 lenses and the rest is just misleading marketing. Please watch Tony Northrup's video about this. He explained this pretty well.

    • @Nick-nt1sb
      @Nick-nt1sb ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This is not completely correct. The statement is correct for the iPhone 14 Pros but the 15 actually natively takes 24 mp Pictures and not 12. This is achieved by it taking one 48 mp and a 12 mp binned picture and then merging them together.
      But overall most users even “Pro Users” shouldn’t care about the numbers but the result only.
      And you can still change it to change 48 mp pictures all the time if you need it.
      Also the extra lenses do not use the full 48 mp that is true, but there is no loss of quality when taking 24 mp pictures. So taking a 35mm picture will be sharper than taking a 24mm one and then zooming in afterwards.

    • @tokkke
      @tokkke ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Nick-nt1sb They are technically 24mp photos, but the detail isn't what would be expected. It's still the same quad bayer sensor that can't produce significantly better results than a 12mp sensor. There is only a certain amount of detail they can pull out of a quad bayer sensor. The 48mp number is mainly for marketing.

      When it comes to computational photography, which is what all phone cameras are doing, the crop actually plays a huge role in how the image is processed, so while it may not be a “true” lens, it is better than cropping in post.

    • @400_billion_suns
      @400_billion_suns ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, he went around in circles trying to explain this because he’s wrong. Those intermediate focal lengths are indeed crops from the sensor. There is no other way to accomplish this in this architecture if you aren’t altering the lenses themselves.
      They probably are just applying distortion mapping to the fake intermediate focal lengths to make them look more like the zoom compression we expect for those focal lengths.

    About the "lenses": No I'm not mistaken. Yes it's true that from 24 to 35mm, if you shoot at 24MP, it kind of behaves as a zoom lens (with variable aperture but ok). But that's just those 3 focal lengths, which are fairly close together (spanning basically the difference between FF and APS-C). Use the 2x mode and you will get less resolution, and you will see it. Same for the macro mode, which is a crop of the ultra wide. So a crop of 12MP, which already isn't much. And the tele lens is equivalent to a FF lens with an aperture smaller than f/22. That's diffraction territory.
    I know some artists aren't as good at the technical side of things. I've met a professional photographer who didn't know what hyperfocal distance was. But her photos were great and better than mine. So... I think that's entirely possible.

    • @johnxmzzhang
      @johnxmzzhang ปีที่แล้ว +3

    6:55 what a load of BS. The non-max version optical 3x has much better quality than pro max “crop 3x”
    So there is a loss of quality. Also uses a smaller portion of the sensor, so less photons being used, therefore quality will be worse especially on low light, than why a dedicated zoom lens/sensor

  • @TheVojta70
    @TheVojta70 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    There are just 3 lenses its only software and there is no magic, becasue the 1x camera can do 48 mpx you can do like the 28, 35 etc "lossless" but only while doing it in 24 mpx so there is nothing not understandable you are just digital zooming with keeping the resolution low for both and doing some ai magic for disortion etc but dont talk about it like its something magic its just cropping more resolution than you need in wider effects do keep the resolution in narrower and its kinda useless

The size and weight of the normal 15pro is just about acceptable thanks to the use of titanium. I ask whether the better 5x zoom justifies the more uncomfortable handling. whether you really use the 5x magnification that often. For portraits, 3 times is perfect.

    The only thing that affects lens compression is your distance from the subject when taking the photo. It doesn't matter whether you use a native 5x or a 5x digital crop of a 1x, lens compression will look the same provided the photos were taken from the same spot. This isn't what people are confused about.
    The 28mm/35mm etc presets are no different than just zooming to that same focal length on a 14 Pro Max. There are only 3 native focal lengths, the focal length settings in between are simply crop/zoom presets, so its misleading to say it has 7 lenses.
    You say there's no loss of quality when going from 24mm to 35mm etc but you're using a smaller area of the sensor and fewer pixels, so it's impossible for there not to be a loss of quality. The only question is how perceivable it is. I'd like to see a comparison of the native 3x of the Pro vs the cropped 3x of the Pro Max.

    The video quality on the iPhone is what keeps me coming back to the iPhone. There's just no comparison on Android... And no I'm not an iPhone fanboy, I actually prefer the Android OS, but facts are facts.

    I have 5x on my samsung s20 Ultra that came out in 2020, i've found it great when filming sports competitions, honestly my favourite feature of this phone because the quality compared to the other lens' is weirdly fantastic. Probably has nothing on current technology though to be fair, side by side.

    • @himynameisryan

    • @cj.blackedits3289
      @cj.blackedits3289 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@himynameisryan you can zoom all the way to 100x but 5x is the default option in the S20 Ultra for telephoto, technically however the telephoto lens starts at 4x where the quality is 100%, obviously the more you zoom from there the more the quality decreases.

    I’d say there are 3 CAMERAS (because each lens has its own sensor). Each camera has a fixed lens and uses sensor cropping, noise reduction and other software to simulate different focal lengths (7 in total it seems). And those focal lengths can be zoomed further by way of digital zoom. So three cameras, three lenses, and lots of magic,

    • @markgwinnell7259
      @markgwinnell7259 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are totally correct ! (in my opinion) Yes its just cropping the sensor on for instance 3x lens and using a diff focal length of that lens itself. It has to crop the sensor otherwise there would be a load of black around the final image. Same with 2x. That is why 2x is only 24mp and 3x is 12mp. 2 x is in video 4k terms just like cropping the full 4k sensor to 1080p. If you get my drift.

    For FILM MAKERS who are not tied to the Apple eco system and want to use a phone for content creation I’d challenge you to compare the iPhone 15 Pro Max to the Sony Xperia 1 mark V as a tool. I believe if you consider features VS Price you’ll find the Sony a MUCH better option. I have a friend getting an Apple 15 Pro Max soon and will be able to compare them for a more firm opinion about this.

    When not using my pro dslr's, I've been using the 13Pro Max exclusively for photo and video work coupled with the Filmic Pro app and getting outstanding results! May look at upgrading after you showed off the wide uses and flexibility of the new lenses + the variable DOF for portraits. Way cool!
    Another vote that you should do demo videos for Apple 🙂

    No confusion there are only 3 lenses. The rest are preset cropped versions which degrades the image resolution to much fewer mp or pixels. The images are BAD …please look at other side by side comparison on TH-cam. You sir are Dead wrong on this issue. The 120 mm is the equivalent of a f21 aperture on a true 120mm camera lens.

  • @DerikTran
    @DerikTran ปีที่แล้ว +1

    yes, please do a full video on the whole "7 lens". i question their claims of 'lossless' quality. you never hear photographers saying i got a 24mm prime but i don't need a 35mm because my 24 can do the same. they buy both lens if that's what is needed because there is a difference.

    It’s still only 3 lenses no matter how you look at it. What you described is still digital zoom. You wouldn’t say a 24-70 is 56 different lenses. It’s a (optical) zoom lens. Putting a prime lens on and using aps-c mode or super 35 is literally the definition of a digital crop
