Regarding the chain length, I just use wire rope and it's always set at one length, not adjustable.

1978 Met a guy, named Jim, with a Gin Pole truck and worked with him till I graduated from University, 2 years later. We called it Super Truck! Hauled Mesquite tree trunks to his sawmill, and sidewalk slabs for his interred 5/8ths Geodesic dome home. This is a good safety video. The explanation of the spare tire as a shock absorber was good. an old flat tire might have been used for illustration. Jim's winch was PTO driven.
Seems like a cheap long pneumatic piston would work well to deploy and recover the poles. Heck, even a small manual hydraulic jack, set near either one of the base pivots, might do the job. Every high school should have one of these and the girls should be taught how to work with it. It is amazing how much work can be done with one of these Gin Pole Winch Trucks.

The contactor on the electric winch won't last long with all those intermediate clicks on your remote. A better idea is to have a locking link on the chains so you don't have to worry about the chains unhooking. You can then pole up fluidly and not wear out the contactor.

Rig up two cables the correct length and you won't have to mess with those chains, at least that's how it's done on large bed trucks.

Chain your poles to the skirt of the truck and there’s no reason you can’t drive with them up. Pay attention to where the power poles are. It’s called common sense.

They drive them chained down like that all over the rig pads loading trucks when they tear down a rig. There are no power lines out there either though. Great idea to safety chain them.

Electric winch is not efficient and will not last. A mechanical PTO (chain drive) off the clutch or hydraulic PTO winch is the only way to go.

Sorry but this is a shear leg or a-frame, not a gin pole which is a single pole with several guy lines. Look up the definitions.

      Definition of gin pole
1 : any one of the three poles of a hoisting gin
2 : a single pole held in a nearly vertical position by guys that supports a block and tackle used for lifting loads
3 : a hand-operated derrick which has a nearly vertical pole supported by guy ropes; the load is raised on a rope that passes through a pulley at the top and over a winch at the foot.
4 : a long, supporting pole used during the erection of a mast or pylon

Actually, this is two gin poles on a single platform. The poles operate in tandem via a removable block connecting shackle at the top of each gin pole.
