Got this on sale for $20 in the US, honestly a great introduction to a peated scotch, very drinkable neat. This is my second Glen Moray bottle, and I will definitely be seeking out more
I agree, Glen Moray has a lot of potential. Yes, it's only 40% in this expression and NAS, but it's still pretty solid and substantial (as far as light fruity malts go). And yes, it's not Islay but it's very educational to try non-peated Islays and peated Speysiders. I also managed to pick up a few of the GM expressions on sheer curiosity, but so far only tried the peated version. It's a good way to make your Islays last longer. Just imagine Glen Moray malts at 46% and above and with explicitly guaranteed no coloring and no chill filtration. I do believe that years of online whining are starting to work so we should keep whining :)
18 pounds on offer (40%, 700ml). 24 pounds on Amazon (40%, 700ml). I was pleasantly surprised by this, I think it's very good value for money at 18. Still worth trying at 24. Reminds me a little of a bottling from Berry Bros (Peated Cask). I enjoy this type of peat.
I would pair it with blueberry.
Excellent description of this wonderful dram. You are bang on! Unfortunately, we cannot get this expression here in Israel. We only get the NAS, 12 YO and 18 YO. However, I have bought it to drink in the UK whilst I'm there. UK Supermarket prices very often on offer, make this a very cheap whisky. I think Glen Morey (pronounced "Murrai") is selling itself short. If you compare this to other similarly priced single malts like Tomintoul 10, Auchentoschen American Oak and Glen Grant 10, this Glen Moray Peated (as well as the 12YO) are alot more interesting with layres of flavours, and frankly more enjoyable to drink. In comparison, the others are flat and Two-Dimensional. In blind tastings, I'd put this up against single malts three times the price.
The peat is mainland Highland peat, so you don't get that coastal brineness. It's more about forest fires, a combination of burnt trees and foliage. With a touch of water, the sweet peat sits on a layer of powdered vanilla sugar and yellow fruits. Yellow Custard and digestive biscuits.
I can apreciate how those powdery crunchy coconut maringues would go well with this dram. LeChayim!
£20 - £23 in the UK, great dram for the money
R550. Or €27,50 for a 700ml bottle in Europe
