    Wow, Black 14 is one we avoid most years. I’ve watched my friends end up sitting on their snowboards to get down that. Good job!

    Makes it look easy. I’d have had to stop 6 times for a rest!!

      Now that you mention it, I can't think of anything.

    I'm 66 and will be 67 next season as a mature beginner, and I don't have the time to build my skills up to tackle Black 14, maybe if I was 10 to 15 years younger I might have, but not at my age.

    70% 😶

    is there a difference between gradient and incline. and slope and degree. i have seen some sites say "an incline of 72%" others say a gradient of 45%. etc one piste ( on this channel) at Murren Graham skied, a sign says 75%. another pistes websites says 'incline of 70%' but Graham measured it on his phone ( remember that one ?) and it was 39%. so i'm confused. i basically thought anything about 60% is Alaska steep ! and jump turns.
    is there a different way numbers are represented. this slope does not look 70% steep. i use a protractor image in my head to guesstimate slope gradient.
    anyone care to educate me a bit pls ???

      Grade percentage refers to "rise over run". A rise of 1 meter over a horizontal distance of 1 meter is 100%. 70% would be a rise of 70cm over that same horizontal meter. A 100% grade would be the same as a 45 degree slope.
      There’s also been. Research recently that revealed people vastly over-estimate the steepness of slopes they ski on. 😁

      Gradient, incline and slope all refer to the same: the pitch of the piste. This pitch is expressed in either percent, degrees or a ratio. You can use all 3 units of measure for all names for the pitch, but gradient is the exception, where mostly a ratio is used for gradient although you can use percent or degrees.
      * Degrees is simple: we all now 0 to 90 degrees and can relate to it.
      * Ratio is a little different. We say a 1 : 2 gradient when the slope drops 1m while moving 2 meter perpendicular to gravity. Or a 1 : 1 gradient when we drop 1m when we move 1m forward along a flattened earth. 1 : 1 equals 45 degrees obviously.
      * Percent is very much related to ratio: we have a 1/2 * 100% = 50% slope, or a 1/1 * 100% = 100% slope. Again 100% = 45 degrees, and 3/5 = 60% = 31 degrees.
      This slope is actually over 70% steep. It doesn't come across on an action cam. There is better footage of this online where in the second part you can see the lift station roof and how tilted it looks. It's actually built flat ofcourse, and then you can see how the skier and cameras are tilted along with the slope. This is why it looks so flat: because the camera is held pretty flat to the slope. You need external cues to actually see the slope.
      60% is probably meant to be 60 degrees? That is barely skiable and indeed jump turns all the way if you can actually grip. Actually anything nearing 45 degrees or 100% is very tough to ski. Most steep runs are not passing the 70-80% mark, or about 40 degrees.

    If that’s what you consider icy, you should never ski in the Eastern US

      He is a former Olympic skier so I think he is using artistic licence (and has dealt with far worse than you or I).
