pro-tip. you are NEVER reading "too much" into this show yeah? read into EVERYTHING. and im sure every other commenter has said it but look for strange letters and codes during episodes and credits
I like how this episode seems to be a bit more random than the others but by the middle of Season 2, Stan's reactions this episode will make a lot more sense.
To those who don't know: Groucho Marx was a comedian who went from Vaudeville to movies. In the episode, his wax figure asks "Why am I holding nothing?" because the real Groucho had a cigar, which he would often move for emphasis on his jokes. According to the episode commentary, the animators originally had wax Groucho holding a cigar, but Disney's Standards and Practices department said they had to get rid of it.
In case you didn't know (tho you propably do) Alex Hirsch (the creator of Gravity Falls) who voices King and Hooty also is the voice of Stan, Soos, McGuckit and some other characters.
2:45 - *“Was that a whisper? Did I hear- Was that- Or maybe I'm just reading too much into it.”* Yes it was, yes you did, it was, and no you don't. There is indeed a whisper at the end of the intro theme, and if played backwards it reveals a hint to solving the encoded messages that appear during the end credits. Three different cyphers are used over the course of the first season, and the whisper in the intro changes to match, each time the cypher changes. 13:25 - *“Did not see that one coming.”* But how could you not? Back during the "Grand Re-Opening" at 5:50, Mabel _told_ you that the wax figures are alive (and that Old Man McGucket could survive them). 😁 Yes, the triangles, eyes, and especially the eyes-inside-triangles are deliberate. All the question marks are around, because that's sort of the "logo" of the Mystery Shack.
Coolio and Larry King (who was known for interviewing a lot of people from a variety of backgrounds) were the voices of their wax figures. Comedian John Oliver was the voice of Sherlock Holmes.
So reference you missed do to when you paused to talk about triangles, Stan accuse Wax John Wikes Booth of killing Wax Lincoln. John Wikes Booth is the assassin of Lincoln. Which I can say with complete certainly that 0 of the kids watching this got when this came out.
TBH, even knowing US history, it is done so fast that it took a good 3 times for me to realise the joke. Also, this is the only pure US history joke that I can remember in the show.
A terrifying doll story for you: When I was a tiny lad, I was terrified of mannequins and ventriloquist figures (specifically the advertisement for the movie Magic from the 1970s). I mostly got over it, then, as an adult, I was staying at a friend's house for a convention and he and his family set me up on the couch in their living room. I laid down, went to turn off the light, and then noticed a meter-tall porcelain doll in the corner, just looking right at where I was sleeping. It was not a comfortable night but I escaped, mostly unmurdered by the doll.
When I was a kid, my grandma had porcelain dolls of all her grandkids made - I don't know if it's still a company, but there used to be somewhere you could send in photos of someone and they'd make porcelain dolls of them. My grandma used to make us matching clothes - she'd make an outfit for our doll, and then an outfit for us. So every Chanukah we'd get a doll of us and the matching outfit. My siblings and cousins were all terrified of their lookalikes, but I never minded, so I ended up taking in all of them. My closet was FULL of dolls. Dolls lined the shelves. Dolls were in rows on the floor. Dolls, everywhere. Lifeless copies of my relatives, and me. I loved them. I would occasionally hide my siblings' doll somewhere in their room just to hear their terror when they eventually uncovered it. TL;DR for a minute without reading the entire comment, I thought I found one of my brothers' TH-cam channels.
I have seen the entire show once... Even in this first 3 Episodes, there is so MUCH stuff that has a double meaning once you know all of it... it blows my mind... again :)
Honestly I don't think any or us were prepared for where this show goes our first time round. I binge watched it my first time maybe five years ago and had somehow dodged all spoilers. So I can confidently say it's a fun ride.
Im gonna guess that you've maybe noticed the triangle with the hat in the intro through editing this ep and there is a thing that you have to solve in the credits i think every episode telling ya if you want to do it.
ok, I'm going to make this as spoiler free as possible, but until not long ago, although I knew that this show has incredible writing regarding the story, this chapter that looks like something simple and funny has a GREAT meaning, what intense that the loss of his wax figure must have been for Stan and how it may have been a giant trigger for his previous trauma and in a certain way forshadow what is shown later, now I understand that it was not because of his ego that he was so affected and shows that even small details in "irrelevant" chapters become important in each character.

I don’t have a fear of dolls or mannequins but did know this one lady who could pass off as a mannequin. She was one of the lunch ladies at my elementary school and I remember her being tall, slim, big blue eyes that seemed owlish and a flawless porcelain complexion. She looked like one of those mannequins you see at the department store and I thought she was a living one. She was really nice but I couldn’t help but find her intimidating. 😅
I love the backwards creepy messages at the end I thought it was just whispering into I saw a video reversing every backward message and they didn’t just do the ones like the candy dog from the time Mabel went insane over the fun dip or bill ciphers death scene but also every end credits whisper and I was like “wait what!?” It also gave me goosebumps over a kids show but they do have triangle Dorito chip demons so I have a right to be a bit creeped out
yes the intro does have backwards talking whispers and the end credits have secret messages. Also secret messages are in the back grounds of some shots of many episodes. and there are even messages that appear for just a few frames. also never watch "the wax museum 1953" because the whole thing is playing in to your fear. It was a wisper at the end of the itro, you have to play it backwards to understand it. This show is full of secret mesages like that, for example, at the end of every episode there is a code you can decipher fot a secret mesage

Ah yeah sorry, still trying to find my rhythm with edits, but I just dont want to have 1 singular scene on screen for too long because of copyright :( and if characters are talking a lot without much natural breaks it can make it difficult to find that sweet spot to cut between my reactions and their dialogue
