  • The ride from West Newton to Ohiopyle was a challenging one to say the least. The threat of late afternoon thunderstorms, with heavy winds and torrential downpours, played with everyone's emotions throughout the day. Then, the tornado watches began chiming on everyone's phones.

Enjoyed your ride from West Newton to Ohiopyle. Looked spooky when the rains came. This is my favorite part of the GAP. On a sunny day it is like riding in a tunnel of shade from Connellsville to Ohiopyple.

It is an amazing part of the trail. It was definitely a bit scary with the storm. Thanks so much for watching!

Nice video of your ride just found your channel. Could you give a little info, what type bike your riding make so fourth. And it looks as thou you don’t have clips on shoes, are there and cons as to your ride or things you would do differently.🚴thanks

Hi. These are great questions. The bike I use is a Trek Dual Sport 1. I’ve had it about two years now and it’s served me very well. No issues with it at all, I do have it tuned and brakes checked once a year. As far as bike shoes with clips, I’m just not a fan of them. I don’t like the idea of being in a situation where I need to dismount quickly and dealing with unclipping from the pedals. Also, with all the camera work I do it just doesn’t make sense for me. I think the one thing I would do differently is be in Pittsburgh the day before. I didn’t arrive until midnight, and honestly was so excited, I didn’t get much sleep before heading out in the morning. Thanks so much for watching.

@@stevetakesabikehike Great advice Steve, Thanks! I'm planning a GAP ride in the near future and had planned to take the train from Cumberland to Pittsburgh. I was considering spending a day in Pitt before the ride (2 nights in Pittsburgh) because of the late train arrival. This comment has just made up my mind. Love the videos!

That's the funny thing about Southwestern Pennsylvania weather. If the weatherman says the storm is going to hit us, the storm hits us. If the weatherman says the storm is going to miss us, the storm HITS us. Especially when you get into the Laurel Highlands Mountain Range. It's like mother nature took the only play they have in the Steelers playbook, and runs it up the middle.

Well the weatherman was right that day. It was an experience for sure.

Very well done, Steve. Hollywood couldn't have better captured the drama and the happy ending better than that.

It’s a shame the weather didn’t cooperate. Connelsville to Ohiopyle is the most beautiful part of the trail IMO - at least what I’ve been on so far! You should try it in late spring/early summer if you ever ride it again.

I still had fun. Although it was a little scary there for a while. I enjoyed that stretch as well as the section just after Ohiopyle to Confluence. But honestly there are so many great spots. I will definitely be back on the GAP. Thanks so much for watching!!!
