In this episode, I discuss what all I’ve been doing this past week, as there isn’t always time to make videos. I also talk about some on-the-fly changes in my operations plan for this season.
I'm behind on my videos, just catching up and helping feed the algorithm! Great video and information. I did not split hard enough this year and had some swarms from my hives. Thanks for sharing!
Great video! I enjoy content like this as it keeps me going while I wait for the weather to warm up here in the North. I appreciate the comment about being blessed. Living right and seeing the benefits and being thankful for the blessings is a wonderful thing. I can't tell you how many times great bee yards have fallen in my lap and I too feel it's a blessing. Take care.
How does this sound? My plan for doubles is to he sure there are 4 brood frames in the bottom, shake all bees in top down thru a funnel, add an excluder and replace top box. The next day, everything in the top boxes will be used for 2 brood/1 food/2 foundations. If I don't have enough queens, some will have eggs/larvae a walk away. Thanks in advance.
Good video and ideas. You're about 1 to 3 weeks ahead of us in northeast IN so it keeps my mind planning😁 Hop the cold this week doesn't ding you too bad. Glenn
Fingers crossed! I think they’ll be ok. I actually do the same thing. Watch others who are a few weeks ahead of me to give me a heads up. Great thinking Glenn!
I so happy I found your channel Ashby. I’m just starting my first honey season and it scares me to split them down. Haven’t done it before and don’t have a mentor. So I watch all the bee videos I can. I attempted to split 4 of my colonies last week. I run 8 framers. The boxes were boiling over with bees. I put 5 frames of brood in my split and 2 food. I left 4 frames of brood in the mother colonies and 2 food and made a nuc with 2 frames of brood and 1 food. Fill in with blanks. Does this sound about right. Lee up the good work. I’ll be watching. May you be blessed and prosper.
The last five years since I started beekeeping, I have been learning the blooms in my area. The heat of the sun can open buds rather quickly. Growing Degree Days (GDDs) are often used to determine whether a climate is warm enough to support plants and insects with temperature-dependent growth rates. GDDs accumulate whenever the daily mean temperature is above a specified threshold temperature.
@@Ashby_Farms_NC Hey Ashby, I have a quick question. I need to make some double screen divider boards and have a lot of 5/8” plywood Can I use this instead of 3/4? I’m not sure if that extra 1/8” matters .. Thank you again !
Great video. Splitting my two hives this week and hopefully get them ready for tulip poplar honey . I lost a couple hives last year. I usually just keep five hives. That’s about all I have time to maintain with my busy schedule. Thanks for some more great information.
I have never had a youtuber explain thing quite the way you do. Thank You.
Absolutely. I just hope I help in some small way!
Watching as much of your content as I can as I await picking up my nuc on April 15th from you. Thanks for your engaging teaching style.
Hey Mark! Looking forward to meeting you. I hope I’m able to offer something educational in one way or another. I really like Bob Binnies content!
Another very informative video! Thank you brother! Keep up the good work. We will be watching! God Bless!
Thanks, you too!
Good video,
Thanks for sharing your thought process. Good timeline.
Thanks Tom! I appreciate you watching!

I split most hives twice and still had a unreal amount of swarms

Thanks for your comment! The Lord blesses those who ask for His blessings! It’s all His anyways!
Thanks, Ashby. Great information.
Glad it was helpful!

Sounds to me like you nailed it! Now it’s up to Mother Nature. If you have a split that doesn’t take, just recombine it with the other split or hive.
Sounds like a good plan to me also
I enjoy watching your channel because we are only about an hour or so away.
Well thanks. I hope I have some nuggets of info to help you.

Thanks for sharing! I had no idea!
Great job brother
Thanks Cary! Hope it helps ya in some way. I appreciate you watching!
Great video!! This gives us new beekeepers an estimated timeline on what to expect. I’m about 40 minutes East of you. See ya soon !!
Glad to help! Looking forward to meeting you in person in April!

I wish you the best of Luck with your splits. And I hope you have more honey than you can handle!
Good stuff Ashby. Congrats on the new yard. Love those finds! Good payoff for just being alert.
Thanks for your support! I appreciate it!
Rays crazy mix. I'll have to check that out.
It’s the ticket!
Caught my first swarm yesterday in East Central alabama
Heck yeah! Congratulations!
Keep it up
Will do!
I am curious if you have an ant issue, (when it warms up), and what your plan is for it.
We do have some ants now. I have weed matting down. I don’t worry about them. Strong hives will handle them, same as SHB and wax moths.
Hey, what Ag zone are you in?
