My mum drives a 1970 Rolls-Royce silver shadow she’s owned it 20 years she’s the third owner. She uses it every day to go to the shops and back a 10 mile round-trip. She puts about £30 petrol a week in it and she documents everything even down to the MPG Which is near impossible and according to her in 20 years, she has spent £8000 on servicing and parts . The car has never let her down. It’s very well loved and garaged and it is used all year round.

This is more in line with what I'd be interested to hear, as clearly buying a car and getting it back up to scratch is an unfair outlook imo. From what I've gleaned, one way or another you'll be spending at least 20K(GBP) either buying a good one, or a passable one & getting back up to snuff - it's what you're paying for a properly looked after motor from then on that I'd be interested to know, assuming that you take care of basic servicing (oil changes etc) from then on.

Rule No1, an old Rolls or a Bentley is going to cost you and it's good to see you are undoing some of the neglected work prior to your ownership. The engines are pretty near bomb proof but they were born of the age of early electronics, which start to fail - it just comes with the territory. We have a 98 Continental R which after a lot of consideration we took on a 2,500 mile across Europe (June 23 Portugal, Spain & France) . The car performed perfectly and it just got better and better. At 75mph it's barely ticking over at 1500 rpm and overall we averaged 21mpg, which is not bad for a 2.5ton 6.75ltr V8. Everywhere we went it was well received, which surprised us, we even had people waving as we travelled, something you just wouldn't expect. Maybe they see something organic in the Bentley (or Rolls), something from a time when wind tunnels meant very little and cars were more individual. Are they the best cars in the world? - not really, but they have character & status even in these Tesla times. I no longer concern myself with driving it sensibly to conserve fuel or the car, I prefer to stretch its legs at any opportunity and it's all the better for it. Rule No2 is drive them, a lot.

I've owned my 86 Spur for just over 2 years, and have invested about $8,000 in taking care of repairs and paying for maintenance that the previous owner neglected. Will be taking it in again at the end of this month to look at the cooling system. But, like you, I don't mind, really. As you say, the car is getting better and better as I tick off the deferred maintenance items.

Great video and stunning car! I’m always very happy to see a devoted enthusiast such as yourself keep a car meticulously. One suggestion I would make is to engage the parking break every single time unless you are parked at perfectly level pavement. Doing so will save your gearbox from unnecessary wear and tear.

Very interesting video, I was going to suggest doing a total cost per mile and later in the video you gave us a partial one based on just maintenance (and repairs?), I would add the purchase price or at least the depreciation over the two years, the insurance, licence fees, and fuel costs and even parking and any other costs associated with owning this car, and keep it updated and see how it grows or declines as you do more miles.

I was fortunate to be able to acquire a 1990 Bentley Eight in midnight blue with a 'parchment' coloured interior, the car is stunning inside, except for the driver's door capping where the laquer has come off, and the bonnet has a clear coat lifting the size of my hand, that whole bonnet is being resprayed by a professional at £400, the door capping is a straight swop for £100, it passed the last MOT with no adviseries as the previous owner had recently had a complete service including a gearbox overhaul. It's the best one I have seen in a long time and I will keep it like that.

It's not just owning a Rolls. It's also the enjoyment that you get, especially if you take the Rolls to the very many Car Shows all over the UK. I am retired, and own a classic car. In the last 5 years, I have been 'searching Google' and attending the local Car Shows around Sydney (Australia). Owning a Classic gives you a new pastime, that beats gardening and Lawn Bowls!!

The economy of scale, if you have sufficient finances to buy and run the 2nd hand Rolls then the figure will be comparable with someone who can afford to buy and run a fiesta with its cheaper running costs. Just the same as the % of earnings people put into a mortgage being roughly the same no matter the cost of the property.

A LOT!!! The Spur is undoubtedly the most problematic post war RR to the end of production. The German fake RR’s are much worse, and cost a fortune to maintain beyond a genuine Crewe built RR. Also the lifespan due to many parts being discontinued is only 7 years. They will definitely not be around for many decades like genuine Crewe built Rolls-Royce’s.
