  • Terracotta Warriors - 1985, composed by Liu Dehai 刘德海
This composition for the pipa, a 4-string tear-drop lute, presents the magnificence of the terracotta warriors coming to life: soldiers with ornate armor, a wide variety of weapons on the marching into battle, complete with horses drawing elaborate chariots and other implements of war from the Chinese Qin dynasty (206-221 bce). Liu Dehai, considered one of the most prominent pipa masters in modern history, used traditional performance techniques in innovative manners to achieve the sounds, colors, and passions of the drama. Creative uses of harmonics, entwined strings, jarring sound clusters and soaring dynamics all build to a breathless climax and sense of awe.
