  • Not a true wild edible but very available most everywhere, old farmsteads and many people have them in there gardens. This plant is a great source of very delicious food.
PLEASE NOTE, this is the original day lily, pure yellow flowers, I got some from my Moms flower gardens and some from my late Grandmothers gardens years ago, I have no idea if the hybrids they make today with the multi colored flowers are at all edible. Check what types are available to you before you go eating them.

We have a red headed stepchild who we keep locked in the basement. He has a really strong constitution, almost goat-like. We simply throw potential food sources down there for him to try. If he's still growling and rattling the chains after 10 days we figure the stuff is likely edible. JUST KIDDING! We don't really throw food down to him. :)
Plant and mushroom ID is no joke and I still go back to the books for some of the not so common shrooms and plants just to be safe.

Good info Joe. I'm harvesting a lot of Garlic Mustard & making pestos. I cut it with celery or carrots so it's not so strong tasting. I've also done 4 batches of the hobo wine now & making variations on that. Thanks man.

Will do Joe. I found a spot where someone excavated acres of "day-lilies". The tubers are exposed making harvest easy, but not being familiar with the plant in early stage I'm waiting to see the flowers and flower stalk to be certain.
It would have been a great harvest and I'm almost 100% certain they are the orange day-lilies, but would rather wait and be certain, not worth the risk. I only eat it if ID'd to edible species or in rare cases entirely edible genera or family, onion, mustard, etc.

I need to do you guys a VR, I have daylilly in my plantation and it grows wild here in GA. here it IS a wild edible! And I got some! You will also see it for some reason growing near power poles all along the highways. The tuber is edible and the flower too.

Great plant Joe, thanks for sharing!
I've yet to try the tubers, but the unopened flowers are excellent. I eat the solid orange ones.

You know I will Joe. :)
From what I gather H. fulva is the original and all other Hemerocallis spp., including the yellow variety, are cultivars of that original. Some sources say they are all edible, and others say not so. There is a lot of conflicting information on the net about this Genus of plants.
I'm also gathering that day"lilies" are in fact not even true "lillies" botanically speaking, as true lillies have bulbs and are spelled with two Ls rather than one. LOL! cont.

Thanks for the video Joe. I love learning about wild edibles. I bought two recent books called:The foragers Harvest, and and natures garden written by Samuel Thayer. they are very details and graphic but my only problem with these books is that they don't have that many varieties. They're both limited to

Yes, garlic mustard is a wild edible. The books that I have don't mention it but there are vids about it on youtube. I don't think it goes further south than Tennessee but we have plenty in Ohio. There is one guy from Minnesota that talks about it on youtube so it might be around you. I'm making delicious pestos with it now.

The other thing that bothers me about this plant is they call H. fulva the tawny daylily. Why not just call it orange instead of tawny? The only tawny I know is Tawny Kitaen. I had to Google it just to find out what tawny meant, she was the first thing to pop up in the search.
    More research is needed. :)

Nice job Joe, I am kinda on the fence about the lily, meaning a little afraid, I am still "researching" and I've heard the only lily that is edible is the "wild" lily or like you said the ones you find on "old homesteads" and "graveyards" too! but never the ones you buy local at the garden center and I just watched a vid that said the "water lily" is toxic. Hey do sub to "Eat The Weeds" he is another great source for wild edibles. Love your vids Joe!!!!!

Hey Joe, does this plant have a look alike deadly twin? I ask cause I think I have these around my area, but I am not sure if they are the same thing. They sure look alike. Is there a clear way to identify if I have the same plant before I kill myself eating the wrong one man? Thanks!
