A Musical Tribute to Tesfaye Lemma and Asefa Abate

- To honor the fifth anniversary of the death of musical great Tesfaye Lemma, the trio of Martha Ketsela, Charles Sutton, and Mikias Abebayehu pays tribute to Ato Tesfaye, as well as to the famous singer Asefa Abate, by performing new renditions of their works.

This traditional music is rare to find in this age. It takes us back to the golden era of the National and Ye Hager Fiker theaters. Their voice is just as in the old times, the music from the Drum, Masinko and the vocals gives a sense of pride for Ethiopians. What an amazing mix! Thank you so much Martha, Charles and Micheal for setting another standard to Ethiopian music.

ግሩም ቅንብርና ለተስፍዬ መልካም ማስታወሻ ነው የሠራችሁት። ተስፋዬ ለማ በዘመናት ውስጥ ከሚፈጠሩ ልዩ ተሰጥኦ ካላቸው ሰዎች መካከል ደምቆ የምናየው ነው። አሰፋ አባተም ባይረሴ ዜማዎቹ ሁሌም ስናንጎራጉረው የምንኖረው ብርቃችን ነው። ሚስተር ቻርለስን የማውቃቸው የ8ኛ ክፍል ተማሪ እያለሁ ፍቼ ከተማ መጥተው ነው። ያኔ በሰላም ጓዱ አስተማሪያችን በሚስተር ማይክል ማካስኪ ተጋብዘው ነበር የመጡት። የተጫወቱልንም ይህንኑ "ሆይ ናና ያገሬ ልጅ" የተሰኘውንና ሌሎችንም ነበር። ዛሬ እኛ እራሳችን ወደ ባለከዘራነት እድሜ ባዘገምንበት ዘመን፣ እነዲህ ንቁ ሁነው ሲጫወቱ በማየቴ ተደንቄያለሁ። አሁንም እድሜና ጤናን እመኝላቸኋለሁ። ማርትዬ አንቺ ደሞ ሁለገብ የጥበቦች ሁሉ ቅመም ነሽ። ገጣሚ ነሽ፣ ሠዓሊ ነሽ ይሄው ደሞ ድምፃዊት ነሽ። አሁንም በርቺ!!! ገና ብዙ ብዙ ትሠሪያለሽ።
Dear Mr Charles
It was wonderful to watch you still playing the Mesenko with exceptional skill. Watching you playing the Mesenko wearing our traditional outfit has brought me back one memorable event that I witnessed when I was a lot younger than I am now. I first saw you performing live about half a century ago when I was a student at Sheno Junior secondary school probably in the year 1968/9. I believe you were invited by one of our PCV, Teacher Robert W. Hazlett, who was one of my favourite teachers. Your coach, the late Getamesay Abebe, whom you mentioned had trained you how to play the Mesenko, was with you during your visit (or shall we call it your national tour?) The school’s small assembly hall was packed by most students and teachers who were privileged to watch. I was among those kids who for the first time witnessed a ferenj not only playing the Mesenko but also introducing himself with a proficient Amargna. It was such an incredible moment that most of us couldn’t even believe our ears!
I hope you will entertain us for many years to come.

Charles Sutton came to my city and played to a whole school when I was in Junior High. I remember him playing Shegiye. We were owe struck we could not stop laughing. Innocent days! That was a lifetime ago. Good to know he is still around and singing. That is what it is all about. Cheers!
