Written by Myrna Summers
Myrna Summers (born March 30, 1949) is a Gospel Music singer who has performed professionally for over four decades and is now the Minister of Music at Reid Temple A.M.E. Church in Glenn Dale, Maryland. She has a commanding yet distinctive alto voice.
Summers was born in Washington D.C. in 1949. Her parents were members of the Church of God in Christ (COGIC), and she performed in services at the Refreshing Spring Church in Riverdale, Maryland from a very early age. She attended the McKinley Tech High School, and went on to the University of Maryland and the Toutorsky Academy of Music.
She formed a group the Refreshingnettes in the early 1960s. The group recorded "Pray Your Troubles / I'm Determined" for HOB Records. Her original compositions "God Gave Me a Song" (1970) and "Give Me Something to Hold on To" (1979) earned her Grammy Award nominations. She was the 1970 recipient of the Gospel Music Workshop of America's Mahalia Jackson Award. Her album entitled "We Going To Make It" became one of her best selling recordings in June 1988 and won a 1989 Stellar Award for Best Traditional Gospel Artist (Female). She is known for her collaborations with Timothy Wright, the Dallas Fort-Worth Mass Choir and Ambassadors for Christ.
She has performed at Madison Square Garden, the Apollo Theater and the Lincoln Center in New York and at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Summers was Minister of Music at Refreshing Spring COGIC before joining Reid Temple A.M.E Church in 1999. As Minister of Music at Reid Temple she is the leader of the church's five choirs and orchestra, and the Director of the Mass Choir. The choir led by Summers provides a stirring accompaniment to the preaching and prayers at the church.
This song came to me at 5:00 in the morning out of nowhere! I googled it to hear again after 50 years!!! I was 7 years old in 1970, its 2023!! Precious memories! Thank you Lord!

I was 5 when this song came out. ALL black youth choirs loved to sing this back in the day. This was THE song of those days.

OK I was born in 1982 and we sang this song when I was in the junior choir. Looking at all the comments here, I realize it’s much older than I thought it was. We used to love singing this song in our choir! Our choir Director used to use it as leverage for us to have good rehearsals. If we didn’t have a good rehearsal, she wouldn’t let us sing it lol. The shade! I used to always wonder what God gave me a song meant as a kid. This brought back some amazing memories in 2024.

My sister Lisa was born in 1965, me in 1974. When I was a child she used to sing this song to me to put me to sleep or to settle me down if I was crying. I wake up with this song in my heart still to this day September 5, 2023. She’s now 59 and I’m 48yrs old❤❤❤

I was 13yrs old playing the Hammond at church. Everybody as their great grandma dog this song at choir anniversaries, the mistress of ceremony said, “don’t nobody else come up here and sing that song we done heard six times I yelled out “thank Yah!!🙄🙄The thing was local choir’s and musicians blew this recording out of the waters especially if the choir was large to huge. The song that overrode it for it’s fame was Bill Miss and The Gospel Celestials “Already Been Too The Water alongside the BCM Choir!! Ooh It was a hit alright people whom didn’t attend church knew it but personally it wasn’t a song I ever played for a choir I wasn’t interested but I can never forget the impact and fame this song laid claim too it really is one of the classics.

As a high school student, sister Summers brought the choir to our school (Calvin Coolidge in Washington, DC) for an assembly presentation of this song the year of its recording. They rehearsed in a section of the school that was somewhat secluded, except I was in a class that was exposed to their sound wafting down the hallways. As my journey has continued, this song has held a sacred space in my soul and propels me on. Blessings to everyone...

I don’t usually comment on songs, but this one blessed my soul this morning…1-26-24. I remember singing this song myself. I am 70 years old…will be 71 next month by the grace of God. My Pastor teaches us that the anointing never leaves the earth. This proves that statement is true!!! I admonish you all to hold on to God’s unchanging hands. He will see you through. Just keep your eyes on Him. There are many things around us competing for our attention but stay focused on Jesus and follow Him closely. You’ll be just fine. I promise you. He has seen me through these many years and is yet seeing me through every day of my life. I could go on, but I’ll stop here. Love you!!! Stay with Jesus!!! He doesn’t leave us…we leave Him. But the good news is He will receive you back at any time. As long as you are breathing, you have an opportunity to be restored and/or saved for the first time. Blessings.

Wow! Memory bomb!! It was early 1970’s, Baltimore, MD! I was 8 yrs old. Our beloved choir director, Vivian T. Howard, taught our Youth Choir this powerful song and I was hooked! The power of the Holy Spirit has been with me and my music ministry journey ever since! Don’t worry-despite the insanity in today’s world, God still has “the power of the world in His hands”! I learned this song from Myrna Summers when she and her choir came to Lincoln University PA in January of 1971 for our Gospel Choir January project. I have not sung/heard it for many years but it is still blessing me after all of these times. One of the pioneers of powerful youth choirs that helped us hold onto our faith during some turbulent times. May God continue to bless her as she still serves Him.

I wasn't even born yet when this song came out, but I remember hearing it a lot when I was small. My mother used to sing with this choir because we are from the DMV area. Miss Myrna is still directing the choir out of one of the churches in the Prince George's county area. I'm so glad to see that there is still a living legend among gospel music pioneers. She helped pave the way for the young choirs who belong to the churches in that area. My only wish is that my mother was still living.

I don’t know how I came across this song over 30 years ago while working as a DJ at my college radio station. At the time I was a heavy metal fan (still am). But when I heard this, I knew a beautiful song when it came upon me. Still moving all these years later. Music like this needs no studio trickery or polish. Just pure raw talent shining through. It’ll be sad day when music like this becomes lost.
