re: Question of great loop, I have a similar sized sailboat (47ft air draft) and have looked into it. There are several ways around, but yes it would require you to dropping the mast if you went down the Hudson (for you going backwards to the ICW), or to get through Chicago.
Murray Canal is a great transit. Picturesque, quiet and fun. Presquil Bay on the other hand is my most hated transit on Lake Ontario because of the weed growth and very shallow in may areas. This year we took the outside route from Cobourg to Wapous then to Collins Bay and on the way back from the Thousand Islands took the inside passage through Quinty Bay. Worked out great for us this year. Love the footage on this episode.
We thought about the outside passage on the way back east but we got a bunch of rain so the water levels were higher on the way back and it was not that bad. An extra foot or two in water level makes a huge difference. Just something to factor in if you know it is a low water level year.
I recommend chartering in Croatia. We sailed a Leopard 45 in August. Beautiful country and great people. If you’re vaccinated no test required for entry. If not, then you need a negative test to enter.
I was at Collins Bay Marina this July for the first time. Unfortunately, Collins Bay didn’t honour our reciprocal privileges (we’re from PCYC) because of restrictions around the lake at the time. We couldn’t believe the gem we had found in CB Marina. We’ll definite back next year.
That's too bad they didn't honor the reciprocal. The Marina let you in during COVID lockdown? I guess you are lucky for that at least. When we called around before the opening everyone said no to getting a slip except Outer Harbor Marina in Toronto.

True. I did say that if you want to go Erie Canal to Hudson you need mast off. If you take the St Lawrence to the east coast you do not need to.

Yes, ours too. You get a beautiful sunset from there too. Last year we got there by sunset. This year we didn't arrive until 10:30pm
