    And this is why I can never get on with a Kindle. Reading a book isn't just reading. It's an experience for so many senses, and a pleasant memory afterwards too. (Yes, it is better than making love!)

      Great stuff Frank! This is an experience, a great one at that👍

      Yes. I just got a new copy of Guns Germs and Steel and it smells SO good! Plus with the feeling of the pages shifting, it really does enhance the experience.

      I'd love to but I didn't get sent them from Penguin although I'll ask for some, see if they'd mind👍

      @@JulesBurt They should really sent you the new set. Seeing them presented by you, with comments about and showing the content, made me look up several of the stories and realize I need to pick up all the books from the first set. And, as you mentioned, they also make perfect presents for bookish friends. The books come with stickers on the back that can easily be removed without damaging the printing on the cloth.
      I love the format of these books. As it's either novellas or a selection of short stories or a combination of both, I don't feel overwhelmed as I can get through them in two or three days. I treasure the more complete editions on my shelves of short stories by Poe, Lafcadio Hearn, Shirley Jackson, Kafka, or Calvino. But these Little Clothbound Classics provide a perfect introduction to some fine writers. And among the first twelve we can even find eight books that speak to readers of classic literature but can as well be considered gateway books for fans of phantastik literature. I will read Alexander Pushkin for the first time (I've seen the opera The Queen of Spades before). I appreciate that LADY SUSAN gets a gorgeous edition. And though I have Carson McCullers and Nella Larson in these hefty NORTON ANTHOLOGY volumes, I will now have copies I can read on my daily commute.
      I'm already eyeing the new volumes with stories by Anna Kavan and Yasunari Kawabata and can't wait to see what stories will be included in the collections by Oscar Wilde, Saki, Dorothy Parker, and E.T.A. Hoffmann.

      Well said sir! I shall drop them an email today and with luck I'll be able to get some sample copies. Appreciate the encouragement with these and so pleased you enjoyed the video. Watch this space👍

    When you remove the little sticker on the back... it leaves a 'glue' residue mark.
    Any ideas how to successfully remove it, without taking the surface off too?

    • @JulesBurt
      @JulesBurt  หลายเดือนก่อน

      With these particular books it's really tough. If you buy the book just after publication when they are new, it's fine, however, as time goes on it gets harder and harder to remove the sticker without leaving a mark.

    WHY did they have to put the stupid sticker on the back of each book?? I bought "Lady Susan" and the sticker has stained the cloth on the back and I'm assuming the sticker has stained the cloth on the back of all of them. Such a stupid, easily avoidable mistake! Especially for a "collectable" item. -_-

    • @JulesBurt
      @JulesBurt  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It was fed back with the larger hardbacks, which now have a bellyband, with the ISBN printed on them. A real shame this didn't continue with the mini cloth bounds.

      @@JulesBurt I just bought 1984 and it has the sticker too. :( It took off a large portion of the imprinting under the sticker. Isn’t 1984 considered a large one too?

    • @JulesBurt
      @JulesBurt  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It is but might have been older stock. What a shame to have damaged the actual book covers. @@Laurahessy

    I’ve recently ordered copies of “Lolly Willowes,” which I read a number of years ago and loved, and “The Turn of the Screw.” These editions look stunning and I’m impressed with the range.

    Kafka a German? 🤔

    • @JulesBurt
      @JulesBurt  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      According to the blurb, yes. German speaking but born in Czechoslovakia.

    • @frankshailes3205
      @frankshailes3205 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kafka was born into a middle-class German-speaking Czech Jewish family in Prague, the capital of the Kingdom of Bohemia, an Imperial State in the Holy Roman Empire, and the Bohemian king was a prince-elector of the empire. The kings of Bohemia, besides the region of Bohemia proper itself, also ruled other lands belonging to the Bohemian Crown, which at various times included Moravia, Silesia, Lusatia, and parts of Saxony, Brandenburg, and Bavaria. Thanks, Wikipedia!
